I get the feeling that the colectors need to keep themselves separate from the main reaper fleet if they are to operate in semi secrecy and off the radar of the governing forces of the galaxy. You need to remember, like the reapers, they are not invincible, if everyone knew about them they would be a target, and would have been stopped much sooner.

they were essentially doing the same thing as sovrign, staying off the radar of the government and military, so they can operate with near impunity.

No, that would have interfered with the Thorian.  Saren needed information from the Thorian not the colonists.  Having the Collectors go in would not have been the proper decision.

You're right, the ability to immobilize all resistance wouldn't be useful at all.

Not when the resistance is vital to the information you need.

Are you intentionally this dense? Send your seeker swarms to bring the colony to a halt and then send in your geth to clean house.

It could be that when Saren met the Thorian, Feros wasn't colonised yet. We don't know how, what and where Saren did/was after Revelation and before Mass Effect.

...

Do you even remember what Saren was doing at Feros?  He was negotiating with the Thorian to get the Cipher.  He only let the Geth clean house after he got what he wanted.  The Collectors served no purpose in that.  Also the Geth were expendable it really didn't matter how much Sovereign would throw at anything.  Putting the Collectors into Citadel space served no purpose.

I mean if the Geth and Sovereign had been aided by that Collector Dreadnaught, im betting it would have bought more time for Sovereign to open the Citidel Relay.

Was Sovereign aware of the Collectors?

they were a back up plan

Yes, that's the point. Once he had what he wanted sending the Collectors there would have ensured victory. Instead his geth got bogged down in a lengthy fight and were eventually defeated.

Seeker swarms would have also been effective as defense on Virmire. Really those swams would be useful anywhere.

Soveriegn: "We are each a nation".

Besides which is the fact that that is not the collectors purpose. The collectors are their to test species genes, likely to determine worthiness of reaperhood. The reason they did not participate in the battle is because they were busy doin their job.

and the normandy blows them to hell and back. yup. the likely hood of the collectors showing up meant more chance for them to die. They are not an main fighting force. Period.

Maybe the Collectors weren't at the Citadel because they were scheduled to be scrapped, just like the Keepers, because the Geth presented a better "servant species". After all, there might have been other "Collectors" throughout history and the old ones were replaced whenever the Reapers found a species that was better suited for that particular role.

Or Sovereign had simply judged that the Citadel could be taken without Collector help.

It's actually most likely just that. As it has been said multiple times in this thread, the Collectors AREN'T warriors/fighters. It's just not what they do.
