I'm fumin. I just spent 20 minutes to end up here venting. It's not that it'sa hard battle, it is a plain old slugfest. But, the friggin number that are on you is a friggin( you know what I really mean.)joke. The game is good. But, there are things that need to be fixed. For one, so many skellies on your ass that 2 out of 3 hits is a f'n backstab. I ejected when it was 3 on 9. Sten and Al had no stamina left due to the f'n lame AI & about 30 % of their health and 2 more skellies were comin in, a friggin joke.
My apologies had grab a beverage and vent my frustations before adjusting the "tactics" and trying it again.
Does anyone else get the feeling nobody at bw tested the preset tactics for the npcs. And, why isn't stamina %age one of the presets.
Any rule monger know of any penalties from stamina being zero? I've, without modifing NPC tactics, tried to turn them off in battle any next thin you know they are back on.
Redcliff battle is craaaaaap!

Maybe if you learned to play the game correctly you wouldn't have that many mobs on you.

I think he wanted to tell you to change tactics, from reading this I assume you rushed straight into the thick of it. I did that at first thinking I can save all the militia and townspeople, boy was I wrong. I realized that pulling 2 or 3 towards me from a safe distance would make it easier to kill them. Try doing that, put your party on hold (not to move or attack) and equip the bow (or crossbow) and fire a arrow at the closest mob and draw him (and the few that follow him towards you). When they are in safe range give the order to your party to attack and kill them. Then repeat the tactic until you kill all of them. Simple

How do you tell your peeps not to charge in? I have had a hard time with that. But helping the villagers is the quest so, I tried to do that.

Under your party portraits (under the very last) there are 2 buttons that you can click. Click on the second one (the one on the right) to make them hold position or move freely.

The right party helps a ton. I am a healing mage and use Leliana, Alistair and Morrigan. Keep them under total control at all time using =
At the bonfire, use pause a lot and make everyone attack the same thing, mobs go down quicker that way.
Up on the hill, make sure to keep your people out of the fire.
If you're not a healer, or don't have Wynne with you, make sure to put healing salves on all of your character's hotbars, pause and heal as necessary.

i think i beat this on my 4th try.
and it took some kiting by the tank at one point for the ranged chars to clean up when i ran out of heals.

Play arround with tactics and use pause alot. And allways be stocked up on potion. You will definitely need 'em when you go to the back-alleys of Denerim. Took me like 3 hours on hard to get by those 3 alleys.

Al, Sten , Morrigan & PC warrior. Morrigan just in front of archer on slope toward the chantery. In the beginning all of the named villagers are brawling it up in front of the chantery. There are 2 of the corpses that are Yellow in the title. I sic sten on the first while I have my warrior PC use arrows on it. Al attacking the closest to dead corpse. Mory doing here thing w/staff while enchanting all weapons with cold.Same deal with the second Yellow corpse. PC is dual weaponing. eventually the villagers die off and it gets to be game on, if you know what I mean. I see some of you are saying don't go down or retreat back up. I now realize that when evryone died, I should have slowly but surely brought the battle up the hill to try and avoid the flanking moves. BTW, level 6 and 7. I've seen if nobody dies you get an Item from somebody, after the battle. But, you have got to be kidding, nobody dies.

I actually finished this part on my first try but the mayor and tomas died.. The battle wasnt pretty as I had to finish off 10+ undead on my own at the end.

^^ Same. All the knights and folks up top survived, but the militia got rocked. It was a fairly tough fight, though I think the fights in Denerim make it look easy (back alley thieves, blood magi, ugh).
To the OP, you just need to set up better tactics for yourself if you don't like the presets. You can go from very basic (use health potions if needed and attack the main character's target) to complex (use x ability on low health targets, and x ability on crowds).

Question for you, did you find the barrels of oil and did you recruit the dwarf and his guards?
The oil creates a fire for the knights so all undead that run at you take a chunk of dmg, the dwarf provides the milita much needed help for the fight, makes it WAY easier.
The other trick I did was set my party on hold and ran my rogue down the bottom and setup an absolute ass tonne of traps while the other 3 at the top helped the knights.

Just use aoe spells or aoe physical skills thats all you need and make sure the tactics are correct before the group comes to deal with aoe rather than 1 on 1.
Easy ...k now follow that.

I beat Redcliffe on my second try. After losing the first time I immediately took precautions and did exactly what Sanguinus_nz did. My PC rogue ran down the hill and made sure the lower area was festooned with beautiful traps. I let Alistair tank, Morrigan DPS, and Wynne heal up top.
Oh, and yes, the oil barrels and Dwarf are almost a necessity unless you plan to do it on easy.

I really didn't have a problem with this fight at all. I played it two times and won it two times (restarted because the main general dude died). Just did all the quests before hand, for the two knights, the militia in the tavern, got the dwarf, the elf, and oil drums. Just for the overkill.
Didn't even do all of that the first time through, but on the second I just decided to explore more and got all that extra stuff done as well.

I beat this with all the villagers alive through pre-battle preperation. I found teh oil casks in the general store, told ser peth about them, I paid dwyn that 1 gold to get him and his boys to fight alongside the militia, then while I told my characters to hold position with the knights, I sent down my rouge and turned the area around where the militia men fight into trap hell. When it was time to fight alongside the militia men I just turned off hold position, my guys came running and then it was a matter of killing the zombies as they made their slow progress though my array of caltrop, large claw, and other traps, since the militia men were at a distance and I kept my guys at a distance, I was able to just chuck bomb after bomb at the slow moving enemies (heheheh, large overlapping caltrop fields) till they all died.
When I tried with my mage, I just stacked the Glyph of Paralization, and the Glyph of Repulsion on top of each other for mass paralize, if anyone I did not want got caught in it, just use glyph of neutralization to break the stun, since players break out of it pretty quick, and monsters take a long time. Blizzard is so beutiful in the situation placing it on the inbound route of the zombies, most of the time they freeze before exiting it.

Up on the hill, pulling groups up to you that can't get reinforcements is the only sane way to do this. However, I do think Bioware dropped the ball here somewhat. It's an RPG and I'm sure it was a lot of characters first instinct to run down and try and save the militia... Which gives you a nice reloading screen as a reward.

that battle is easy.
press the hold button on your companions. its under their portraits
then if you have mage nuke the skeletons and your warriors can take care of them if they manage to reach you

for once theres an rpg with decent amount of enemys. i was getting very very tired of rpg's usually being 1 on 1 or 3 on 1 at most. its about time we get surrounded.

No bragging intended, but I completed this batlle on my first try. My main is a warrior and I had Morrigan, Leilana and Allistair with me. I stopped halfway down the hill where the battle was and doused the area with arrows and magic. When we were rushed, we entered melee with Morrigan using her area stun atack. I rinsed and repeated until a handful were left, then we charged in. I learned my lesson early on in the game that charging into the frey doesn't work in this game. I use distance fighting as much as possible to soften up the enemy before they draw near. I hope this helps.

On the hill also provides a narrow gap to keep the enemy in front of you. I tend to look for natural elements to give me an adge, tactically. E.g. Hills are great for archery.
