As someone new to this type of game I'm wondering how big you all think it will get. Will it have a cult following like FF or WoW? (neither of which I've payed attention to). Is it something that you see yourselves playing for many months or even years to come? Is it the start of a series of games that will run and run? we already know about the promises of future DLC to keep this first instalment going for a long time. Once you have this game will it be the only game you play or one that you keep on coming back to?

These are rhetorical questions btw, you do not need to answer them directly. I just wanted to get a feel for how RPG players view this game. I want to lose myself in Dragon's Age, safe in the knowledge that this will be a never-ending bustling community.

Biggest following since sliced bread.

All quibs aside, yes I see this having a bigger following than Mass Effect and a more dedicated following than TES, if Bioware play their cards right. After all, if it can deliver on more than half of what's been promised and be half the game that Baldurs Gate was with all these fancy new proprietary game mechanics and graphics...

Yeah, it all depends on the delivery. If it's as good as promised, then yeah, it'll have a following and I'll keep coming back to it again and again, particularly with mods - they always increase replay value in good games. ^^

I think there will be a following. How big? Unknown. But my logical guess not as big as MMO's like World of Warcraft©/™. The thought that keeps poping back up in my head with such question as the original poster asked. Is..well BioWare™ has made role playing games for many a long years, it has always had a good following (for there work) but then thinking back; did Baldurs gate have a huge following? I mean I heard about it from a friend in school so long ago. Not on any television aids or magazine aids but then now we have the interwebs...

Is that a blessing or a cruse? I for one hope and truly mean it. That there will be a following (regardless of how large) for a very long time. Though then toast has a following and there large..*nods a bit* aye. Dragon Age is bigger then toast in my eyes. (Well normal toast. Cinnamon toast still rocks hard)

Bioware have big plans for the whole concept....

'Dragon Age isn’t just one of the more hotly anticipated games of the holiday season—it’s the single most ambitious RPG project you’ve ever seen. '

Warning! Contains what some may consider to be minor spoilers.

For me to be playing it for years, which I have done with only one game (NWN) so far in life, it has to have multiplayer with private servers somewherer down the line. But as far as singleplayer games go, I think it will be a winner with all the custom mods and such. But mods usually take a while to build (good ones anyway), so maybe I'll take a break after finishing the campaign, and then return to it later.

The popularity of Dragon Age: Origins depends on how successful the ecosystem they build around the franchise is. Taken alone, any single-player game will not become massive on a modern scale - they just are not engaging enough to hold the interest of players for very long (by long I mean multiple years). However, the new fad for developers and publishers is to develop and market IPs across a broad spectrum of media.

There are novels, comics, a browser game, downloadable content, this community, modding tools, etc. Who knows, there may be a movie one day, and movies are just about the best indicator of how popular a game is.

If these components succeed then there is a good chance the game will become quite a large phenomenon.

As it is a Single player RPG, Dragon Age doesnt look like it will get all the attention it deserves, ofcourse if mods are made it will attract a lot more people but for Dragon age to become something as big as WoW it will have to expand to more than a single player experience. For a single player game, Dragon age seems to have become fairly big already and it looks like it will only get bigger.

It's the start of a minor franchise.

But one that we'll probably stick with until we die.

I think the fanbase will be restricted to the BioWare fans, the (western) RPG fans and some more casual gamers, but I don't predict a new hype or something like that. To bad tough it deserves it =/

I would be highly surprised if it moved 1 million copies(at least on the pc). These types of games are very much oriented towards a niche of the game market.

Unless your an action oriented rpg, like Oblivion, which went well above 1 million copies, Fallout 3 which sold more than 5 million, or have Diablo on the title... i dont think your going to get many copies moved as a strategy rpg.

Now this can all change to the game being available on consoles, and Bioware's marketing push wich seems directed as portraying the game as being more action oriented than it really is.

I never actually knew there was a book, thanks. Is it worth a buy then? I'm tempted to just go out now and buy it on my lunch!

I'll be playing for years to come. I'll be saving a lot of money too, since I won't be investing in that many other games. It's about time a game like this is almost here. It's been so, so long since the last great CRPG (Baldur's Gate series), and us true loyal long time fans deserve our just reward. Thank you everyone at Bioware!

The Dragon Age Novels 'Stolen hrone' and 'The Calling' by David Gaider are absolutely fantastic and in my honest opinion a MUST READ before playing as it really introduces you to the setting and makes you fall in love with it. You will enjoy the game a lot more from the start when it feels like you are returning back home after all the fantastic adventure in these works (as well as top notch character development).

I would be highly surprised if it didn't sell well over 1 million on the PC alone, given time. Both BG1 and BG2 have sold over 2 million without the expansions (  http://www.webcitation.org/5ipfGGAMX ) and this game seems to be getting similar review scores. It's also been hyped a lot more.

With console sales accruing, I wouldn't at all be startled if it did better than both BG titles (again, given enough time).

500,000 in the first two weeks of launch. 1 million by mid January. That's my guess.

This thing is going to be huge - look at this social network -- it allows modders to quickly find each other as well to create more modules for new adventures (NWN would have benefitted from this). This means endless adventures (and modders can create some truly high quality stuff). Longer the community lasts, longer the game is in the gamer eye and continues sales. Fantastic stuff Bioware.

Will definately pick them up. Unfortunately they didn't have Stolen Throne in Watersones at lunch and it'd take 2 weeks on order. So now to go order it off the net.

edit: There we go, ordered off amazon, first class, should arrive sometime in December then! Image IPB
