Best origin I actually played entire game with: Mage.....but it completely sucks that I can't take a certain position of power at the end of the game so I will only ever play Human Noble from now on.

Worst origin.....City Elf.....it completely 100% sucked.

Well OK the Dwarf origins had me very interested to see orzammar react to their return but I refuse to play them until BioWare fixes my well deserved loot. I have tried over a month to earn the items from the DAJ falshgame and then I went through a ton of headaches getting the Character Creator running to earn the Lucky Stone even though my PC meets and surpasses ALL the DAO requirements so I will NOT be robbed of all that and the blood dragon armor, gamestop items and the edge by some buggy origin no matter how interesting it is.

Actually I liked them all for various reasons though the mage is by far the weakest but then again none of the characters really has any reason to become a gray warder other than the dalish who is already infected. So that kinda makes it weird for every character. Also a big lack of racism towards and from humans on the elf storylines. Oh sur you can say things but they dont really affect anything and eventually you have to agree and travel with people you actually hate. would have been nice to get some extra negative interaction from some of the NPC's or townsfolk. Suddenly once your away from your group you are now accepted by everyone even before your a gray warden. But each of them have their own little nuances throughout the game regarding their origin story and I like that alot which makes me like the human noble and dwarven noble the best just for things that happen later in the game.

My favourite are human noble female and city elf female as origin stories. I have no problem with classical story elements, cliche or no and anything involving dealing pain to a rapist is fun for me. Finished the game with both and got vey different outcomes however. My first char was the city elf and I found the ending so disappointing it took me a while to decide to replay the game.( in part this was to do with the origin but I will not elaborate why because of spoilers) My second playthrough was the human female and I found that quite satisfactory.

Least favourite was Dalish elf. It did feel rushed to me.

I have not played through the dwarf origins so no comment there.

Dwarf Commoner... The Noble stories are good, while they're happening, but I prefer the whole zero to hero angle.

The only one I played so far is the mage origin. (I'm somewhat of a mage fanboi :P) so i cannot comment on best or worst, but I can say what I liked/disliked about the mage origin.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Harrowment, it just felt it was really well done and believable. The last encounter in the fade really made me realize how treaturously dangerous that place is and the final speech "The real dangers of the fade..." was really good.
I also liked the way you were forced to make a decision about Jowan, but at the end of it I just felt they let my character off the hook waaay too easy, i would have like to seen the templars trying to drag me down to the dungeons or kill me on the spot and duncan being forced to throw himself between me and them in order to save me :P

I found it annoying with the mage origin that you can refuse to help Jowan... and then... nothing.  If you go talk to the first enchanter he FORCES you to help Jowan so he can do some petty crap.  You have no option to refuse, just three different text options that say, ok sure - I'll betray my friend!  The only other option is to go back and accept Jowan's offer from before.

I underdstand that they have to get the plot going, but the mage origin felt alot less organic in that respect.  If you're kidnapped or your bride is stolen (city elf), not having a choice, or having a strong motivation to go through with the rest of the origin makes sense.  In that same manner, the second half of the human noble origin forces you to act in a realistic fashion.

The mage origin does that plot contrivance that is so annoying... forcing you to say yes to an idiotic suggestion.  Really, is there any reason why you can't vehemently refuse the aid the First Enchanter, it would be in-character in Jowan IS your friend, and if he isn't - why deal with his crap at all?

The whole situation seems to pigeon-hole your character, and even if you were helping the First Enchanter (to the point of getting him to sign permission slips and give you a run-down of the layout of the basement) you'll still get ****ed at in the end - and forced to leave.  Again, that makes no sense, you have no reason to be in any trouble at all at that point.  tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ButThouMust

The Dalish Elf origin has a similar feel in a way.  Let's go explore the super evil ruin.  Wow, this place is really messed up, and full of monsters!  Let's keep exploring anyway!  The only character it establishes is your friend - who's an idiot apparently.  You aren't capable of making decisions in this scenario.

Meh.

I think the Human noble is probably one of the best origins, because even if you don't like the story, it integrates with the rest of the game more than any other one.

The city elf doesn't integrate as much, but the opening is good.  That said, your being elven is practically a non-issue for most of the game.  You don't really get that underclass feel.

Both of the dwarven ones were average imo.  The stories themselves were good I think, but the payoff (at least for a returning noble) is probably the worst in the game.  Considering all that happens to you, you have very little in the way of realistic responses.

The bad ones for me, the Dalish and mage.  The mage I already mentioned...

Being Dalish similarly seems to have very little impact considering you: have a racial aversion to humans, grew up in a forest away from anything human-related, and are a member of underclass-race/bandit ethnicity.

Best: Magi - It felt the longest to do and i could connect with my charecter and other charecters and enviroment.

Worst: City Elf (Male) - Rushed and not enough emotion.

I picked my choices because I feel a hero’s back story should distinguish her from her peers. The tale should about him or her and why he/she was catapulted into the role of a hero.

To me the female city elf does that. It’s the main character’s wedding that is disrupted. She’s the one that catches the noble’s eye leading to her being kidnapped.  She must commit what’ll be seen as a serious crime to protect her own honor (though it does fumble around a bit at that point).

The dwarf noble is the second child of the king and because of that is drawn into the plot over succession. No one else can fill that role (because there can only be one second born prince). Thus, the main character is a critical part of this story.

I also like the human noble for a similar reason. As one of only two children of a noble whose lands are under attack, it’s the main character that has to fight as everything he/she has get’s destroyed. The hero is pulled from everything down into nothing and must now struggle to re-gain what has been lost.

The mage’s story completely drops the ball here. You are the harrowing record holder (golf clap), after that it’s all about Jowan. He’s the one in trouble, he’s the one with a potentially tragic love, and he’s the one who keeps making dangerous mistakes. In fact the reason they get you involved at all is stupidly trivial in a tower full of mages. I even get the feeling your help would be completely unnecessary if those two would have been a little more cunning about getting the tool they need.

Best: Human Origin. There's actual loss here, and actual turning point to push the story forward well.

Nearly every other origin was almost as good with memorable characters (Dwarf Noble and Common stand out ... my good bud Leske, I hope he's bashing some heads somewhere)... with two exceptions:

Dalish: more a dungeon crawl than anything else. In fact, at the gauntlet much later, I even forgot who the character was who was talking to me...

Mage: Talk about loss of origin. If you are a mage, it doesn't matter what your origin is, you are locked in the tower. On any mage play through ... there's just nothing to say about later on about your true origin. "I was in the tower... I became an apprentice. there was a small scuffle. the end." ... The very whiney and irritating initiate named Jowan, who anyone would know is up to no good, is immutable: it doesn't matter what one does it always turns out the same for this origin.

Best:

Dwarf Noble, I found it to be the most involving and it gave my character a singlemindedness that I enjoyed playing

Worst:

Mage. While just as involving the amount of times you have to play it to get all the achievments is just *sigh* And I always wonder why the first enchanter makes me uneasy.

Best: Human Noble

Reason: Gives you motivation for further in the story, Dog + Nan

Worst: Dwarf Noble [hide]

Reason: Just seemed overly drawn out and you're not given the option to see through Behlen.

I'm fondest of the Mage and Dalish Elf origins myself.

I wish I had more options with the Jowan part of the Mage story, but I really liked the Dalish. It actually struck me as interesting that you're one of two origins that's ever encountered darkspawn before you join the Gray Wardens, and it gave an interesting feel to the rest of the game to play it as a complete outsider, someone who's tried to keep away from human society but is forced into it.

Really? Why? Mage origin was sooooo boring. I <3 Dwarven noble and hate dalish elf. Though I'm sure it'd be a bit more dramatic if I played a female.

Dwarf noble. You get to kill your brother, have a threesome, be a gladiator, and fight darkspawn before even joining the wardens. And when you return to Orzammar it's just a lot of tension, I love how it interacts with the whole storyline, being an outsider, a true outcast.

I haven't played the dwarven noble yet, but so far I have like all the origins.

I really can't pick a favourite, since the RPing for the dwarven commoner, city elf, human noble, and dalish elf were satisfying on different levels. Though on my current Dalish run, there seems to be more dialogue uniqueness for the PC than most other origins.

My only real gripe is the same gripe others have listed with the Mage. It is decent, but I do wish there were more options to display a predilection towards turning against the Circle/Chantry/Templars. I think the Blood Mage tendency should have at least been hinted at far more for players that wished that.

Having tried them all now, best Origin was clearly Human noble

Dwarf was ok but the reason to hate Howe just wasnt there (like in human Noble storyline) and the fact you cant, no matter what you do, clear your name makes the whole experience rather unappealing!

Think about it, you can get standing enough that you alone picks the next king but you cant get a false murder charage taken off your record?

Me thinks things in the Dwarf noble storyline, just doesnt make a whole lotta sence.

Hmm, my favorite ones have to be between either the Dwarven Noble origin or the Human Noble one, I always find that kind of betrayal at the start of a game rather compelling, and it always helps spur me on throughout the rest of the game to get revenge.

I'm still torn with the Mage origin, I like the way they went through the Harrowing (if a little short), but Jowan is such an annoyance. I know it would have been severely limiting the story arc, but I was hoping to have an option of giving the Templars the heads-up on the guy, mainly so he'd get off my back with his whiny voice.

For me the least enthralling origin would have to be the Dalish Elf, again due to the limitation of options that's necessary to help the story along. ("Hmm, a sinister looking mirror that appears to be moving. Quick, lets jump up close and gaze into it!"...*facepalm*)

My favourite so far is the Dwarf Noble origin atm, i like the human one to as it continues on quite a bit with howe etc at the end where as i ain't seen what happens when you return to Orzammar as a dwarf noble.

My least favourite origin is the Dalish elf, a bit bland not really much killing, pretty short as well compared to the others, then again it was the first one i tried.
