Best: City Elf (female)

Reason: I feel like such a bad****, rescuing myself. Especially the look on the guards' faces when my friend brings me a sword. :D

Worst: Dwarf commoner.

Reason: I could see where this origin was going from a mile away.

Best origin: Human Noble.

It had a George R. R. Martin feeling, at least for me.

Worst: Dalish Elf.

I don't like Dalish Elves.

Best: Mage

Reason: The trails in the Fade was very interesting. I played this Origin first and I really felt like I was introduced to the concept of the Fade well.

Worst: Dalish

Reason: I'm a forest elf who hates humans and lives in a nomadic clan. Okay cool. Why is the only thing I do that seemed Dalish was be mean to a few humans lost in the woods. The ruin wasn't that interesting they could of conveyed it was an Elven ruin better with Tevinter influence. It seemed the same as The Magi Tower, Sacred Ashes Temple and a lot other ruins.

Second Best: Dwarf Noble

Reason: It was the most developed. It had different endings and those endings really affected how Orzammar played out.

Second Worst: City Elf

Reason: My wedding day just got ruined. So what do I do? I sneak in via disguised as a servant. Come on if i'm getting revenge on one of the most important people in the city you think there could of been more of a stealth element instead of me just being able to slice and dice through trained guardsmen, after all i'm a poor starving elf that isn't allowed to own weapons why am I suddenly able to overpower everyone?

My favorite was female city elf. It was a nice setup for a cynical character, and heaps of badassery what with the self-rescue.

The worst was easily the Dalish origin, like that was the last one Bioware did, and they just ran out of ideas.

I liked pretty much all of the Origin stories, and the only exception was the Dalish one, which seemed very bland, short, and unanswered. The other impression I get is that it doesn't really have much of an affect in the rest of the game, considering the Dalish clan you meet is completely different and you never see yours again. My only other complaint is that the Human Noble and City Elf ones are exceptionally short compared to the Dwarven/Mage ones.

Oh this is very tough.  Top is the best, bottom the worst.

1. City Elf, Male: Ok alot of people call this unrealistic or lack of immersion. Well it is, first of all your mother taught you how to use swords and knives, which is why you kick so much butt. So when your gal gets taken you know you can do something about it and go after her with yo skillz, dawg(haha). Plus Duncan was seeing you as possibly being a Grey Warden so this was also a good oppurtunity to get out of that craphole.

It was also probably the most comical of all the origins. Especially when you go into the meadhall/cafeteria:
"What are you doing here elf, and why do you have a weapon?"
-Err...I was just...oh forget it -knife throw into throat-

2.City Elf, Female: Same thing goes for the female, a legit reason behind, well-timed oppurtunities, and pretty funny.

3. Dwarf Noble, Both: I liked this one alot, though it was really long. I look at the times of all the Origins and this one is a good extra 20 to 30 minutes(Majority of them being a good hour). Luckily it was worth, the whole thing about it was just..great!(The end was the best part, I wasn't expecting any of that at all).

4. Dwarven Commoner, Both: This one was awesome. Being involved in criminal activity and working for a crimelord had a fitting feeling to the non-caste dwarves. My favorite part of all of this was pretending to be a champion in The Proving. This gave a heavy Gladiator feel(the movie) to it.

6. Human Noble, Both: Kind of cliche but still fun, I had a sense of attachment after the loss of my parents and the only thing I had left was my dog. THis one probably had the biggest sense of closure that was also heavity attached to the main story(kicking Howe's butt once and for all.)

7. Dalish Elf, Both: Very short, bland, running back and forth, not much closure, dull reason to become a GW. The ending was just...no emotion at all. It didn't really seem like the PC was going to miss his people much at all, kind of just felt on a few like a pervert and went on his/her way.

Edit: Oh my bad, I completely forgot the Mage Origin.

5. Mage, Both: THis was one well rounded. You spend time understanding the Fade, and then spend time understanding the reason of the Templars and why Mages are imprisoned in their Tower. This one, other than the Dwarven Noble, has the most attachment to the lore in the game than the others. Before I forget, the ending was cool, nice sense of closure.

poor dalish elves get no respect haha. none from me either

1. dwarven noble (only played as a female). proving matches, political intrigue, deep roads, and a nice sidekick. What's not to like?

2. dwarven commoner- sure you could see where it's going, but they do a good job setting the story up

3. city elf- only played as male, but it was fairly interesting.

4. human noble- getting dog is about the only noteworthy thing of this origin.

5. mage- Jowan is lame. wish I could have killed him right there

5. dalish elves. single path in, single path out. I love this game, but it does this too much. At least try to pretend there's a great big wide world out there. This is just plain lazy.

I would personally say that the Mage origin was the best of the bunch, followed closely by the Dwarf Noble origin with Human Noble being third.

The Mage origin really did capture what it is to be a mage in the DA:O world. I remember the realisation of Mouse's nature took me completely by surprise, and made me really appreciate the mentioned danger of the Fade in a way that just wouldn't have come across just having some character tell me it.

I think the Dwarven culture is extremely well thought out, so the whole conniving politicking really worked well.

Worst I would probably say City Elf. It wasn't bad but compared to the kind of epic-scale origins of the other characters it just came across as a bit underwhelming.

I greatly enjoyed both dwarven origins and the human noble, but I think I'll go for human noble as my favorite.

The worst origin? Dalish, no question.

Best for me is definitely Dwarf Commoner with Dwarf Noble a close second. It did a great job of depicting how casteless are treated. The discussion with Duncan was cool, and the best part of the origin was taking off your helmet to see all those nobles raged that their warriors were defeated by a criminal. The ending as a dwarf commoner was also very satisfying. Seeing your sister so happy and becoming warrior caste and a paragon made the ending one of the best.

worst:Human Commoner. That farm was just really boring, and I did have hate for my uncle making me clean out the barn, but you never get the chance for revenge on him.

joking aside worst-Dalish, just really boring and not really connected to the game' story at all. Maybe if you were an elf in Zathrian's tribe and had to fight werewolves it could have been better.

From best to worst for me would be:

1. Human Noble
2. Dwarf Noble
3. Dwarf Commoner
4. City Elf
5. Magi
6. Dalish Elf

Human Noble - My favorite, I'm a sucker for revenge stories, and this origin puts you into that mindset, the villain seems to get away and seems to be on top of his world and you are just aching to put him in his place. I also believe, personally, that this origin transitions very well into the endgame.

Dwarf Noble - This one was fun. "Gorim, why is it talking to me?" "Gorim we must kill these men." This origin was worth it for Gorim alone, I think he's the best origin partner you get out of all the origins. Fighting in your own proving, understanding dwarven politics, and the big "omgwtf" moment at the end when Bhelen shows his traits as the "Magnificent Bastard". It's even worse if your dwarven noble is actually noble in the heart.

Dwarf Commoner - I wasn't expecting much from this one, I'm glad I was wrong. Leske was a cool partner, second to Gorim in my opinion. You felt like you were casteless, a nobody, and everybody reminded you of it. You got to show your face and show what a casteless can really do when you infiltrated the Provings, as well as fight the organized crime syndicate you were forced to work for. Also, laughed my butt off when the guy you were supposed to impersonate waltzed right in the end of your match at the Provings all drunk.

City Elf - I hated this one, and in a good way, this origin was fun to play because it gave you a chance to turn serial-rapists into bright red geysers of glorious blood. Best origin to play as as female character. Also a good origin if you plan on playing a human hating ragemonster. And Shianni is my favorite character, who didn't deserve what happened to her. Soris gets a lot of flack from what I've been reading too...but I really liked him, he showed a lot of courage coming to the estate with weapons, and even comes out on top at the end.

Magi - The only part I liked about this was the Fade. Everyone seems to hate Jowan but I think he's pretty cool... I really wished we could have used the Rite of Conscription on him at Redcliffe after healing Arl Eamon, too bad it was cut out, this game needed more mages. I have to admit though, this origin had a weak reasoning to become a Grey Warden, just as the Dalish Elf origin.

Dalish Elf - This was the last origin I played, I wouldn't say it's good or bad...but a little bland, as someone here had already said. I actually expected to be with Zathrian's camp, not another camp, and I thought I was going to explore the Brecilian Forest instead of going into some ruins. Probably gets more flack than the other origins in my opinion, because the maps are so small compared to the other origins.

Holy macaroni Batman, didn't mean to make this a long post.

Now that I've done all the origins, here goes.

1. City Elf (female). The first origin I played and it may have shaped my perceptions of the game. I decided that my character was content with her life and upcoming nuptials. So when it all goes wrong I tapped into my inner Belkar and unleashed Princess Stabbity. That anger carried me clear through Landsmeet.

2. Dwarf Commoner. I loved this origin. You get a clear idea of what dwarven life is like. And all of your choices make sense. Leske was a great second banana.

3. Dwarf Noble. Again a great view of a well thought out society. Gorim is the best NPC in the game.

4. Human Noble. It's been done before, but Bioware at least did it well. Meeting Howe in his dungeon towards the end was very well done.

5. City Elf (male). The change in sex made a difference for me in game play. I felt it was more detached and less emotionally immersive than the female origin.

6. Mage. There is a fairly big gap between this and number 5. I liked it until I was made to ride the plot train. If a friend ever came to me with a proposition like Jowan's, the two things I would never do are help him with it or go to the authorities. I would call them an idiot and explain in great detail why they should rethink all of their life choices.

7. Dalish. Been there, done that, many many times.

I liked all of the top five a great deal. The other two weren't bad, just mediocre salad covered wiith 'meh'onaise

The dalish story was so SHORT, they decided you had to run the same dungeon twice. It did give you the best reason for joining the Wardens, though joining or not joining was probably the only decision you were asked to make in the entire origin. (not much choice, there)

Dwarf Noble and Mage were much larger, with more options. Dwarf Noble seems like it affects the main story most, so that's the best one imo.

Also Jowan annoyed me.

I liked H Noble but was also short. Bit clichéd, but I really wanted revenge for my family. I also liked having my dog with me climbing that Ostagar tower.

Haven't done the City Elf yet. Sounds like my first female char.

Best: Female city elf.

Reason: Elves are the best race in my opinion, and the origin itself was very emotive. It made me really hate this noble a*sclown Vaughan, and killing him was one of the best parts of the entire game. In addition, I like Shianni, and I wish I could have romanced her when she said "I love you, Cousin". That I couldnt is the only downside in the city elf origin.

Worst: Dwarf commoner

Reason: I dont like dwarfs very much, and I really HATED all about this carta, and your always-drunken mother, and the "lets f*ck a noble" way of the female dwarfs. And it was unrealistic when you beat the best dwarfen fighters ever in the Tournament. Oh, and I hate Leske, your "best friend". There are VERY few characters in the entire game that are as annoying as him.

Best: Human noble and human mage, both female.

Worst: Dalish, next worst, female city elf. Once I killed vaugh, I seriously couldn't see any motivation or justification to care about anything beyond the alienage. Dalish was just boring, and I couldn't really get into it.

Best: Female City Elf. This was my 4th playthrough and from the moment Vaughan's buddy punched me in the face I was foaming at the mouth screaming at the TV that mutha** gonna die! when I giot the beheaded animation with my rogue I was so satisfied that if I were a guy I would have ****ed myself

2. Dwarf Noble female I too think it stunk not to be able to recruit Gorim and pick up where we left off I loved the whole loving beyond caste boundaries.

I really don't have a 3 because I am impartial to all the others with the exception of the Daelish elf origin god that was soooo boring.

Best: Dwarf Noble

Dwarf Noble was reasonably long, and had an interesting storyline that both seems to naturally lead to your character ending up at Ostagar and ties well into the Orzammar segment later in the game.

Worst: Dalish Elf

Dalish Elf was short, shallow and railroady. It has nothing that comes back to affect the main plot in any meaningful way, and your character really isn't given any reasonable motivation for following through with the rest of the game's plot.

for me in order:

1: Human Noble

2: Dwarf Commoner (proving is awesome, especially the ending)

3: City Elf

4: Mage

5: Dwarf Noble

6: Dalish Elf -- was my first ever origin, stopped the character after finishing it, and have never done Dalish again. Complete yawn-fest.

That's a classic and overrused RPG trick to make a shallow game seem longer. I'm surprised something like that is in DAO since it's an otherwise awesome game.

I hope the Dalish Origin was just an afterthought tacked on at the end of development; that would certainly explain why it's the worst origin story by a LONG shot.

As for the best: I'm sticking with the Human Noble just because it gives you the most wretched human being ever conceived as a villain. Arl Howe makes "hating" cool again. B)

Best origin I actually played entire game with: Mage.....but it completely sucks that I can't take a certain position of power at the end of the game so I will only ever play Human Noble from now on.

Worst origin.....City Elf.....it completely 100% sucked.

Well OK the Dwarf origins had me very interested to see orzammar react to their return but I refuse to play them until BioWare fixes my well deserved loot. I have tried over a month to earn the items from the DAJ falshgame and then I went through a ton of headaches getting the Character Creator running to earn the Lucky Stone even though my PC meets and surpasses ALL the DAO requirements so I will NOT be robbed of all that and the blood dragon armor, gamestop items and the edge by some buggy origin no matter how interesting it is.

that's only a problem with dwarf noble origin and there are a few work arounds.

From best to worst:

Good Origins:
1. Dwarf Noble - Best played as male.  Great intrigue.  Long, but always interesting.
2. Human - Excellent intrigue, just not quite as good as the dwarves for this.
3. City Elf  - Best played as female.
4. Mage - Nothing wrong with it, but the other three are just more interesting.  Has some good moments, though.

Bad Origins:
5. Dwarf Commoner - the only good thing is that you start as a thug/leg-breaker for a crime boss.  Bad story though.
6. Dalish - short, dull, uninteresting story

Really? City Elf Origin was different for female? I did feel the male one was rushed.....

Aye city elf origin was far from the worst for me, Dalish elf was the worst imo.

I did like the difference between male and female city elf as well, It just felt so much more epic playing the female side, even though I'm a guy myself. Playing the woman who goes on a murdering rampage for raper and killing her girlfriends and runing her wedding. It just seems so much more interesting then when your the man and go take revenge for what the Arl son did to your wife, honestly when you do though it remind me of Braveheart XD.

Edit: got a little off topic sorry.

My fav is a close tie between city elf and city dwarf, I perfer playing a character that has had a hard life over a noble that had it made then somehow got betrayed.

Dalish elf is certainly my least fav, the fact all the dalish elfs are so damn racist leaves a bad taste in my mouth, it honestly reminds me of black people talking about how the white man did this or that and enslaved blacks, I totally understand it was wrong. However I am not the man or keeping you down, I had nothing to do with what my white ancestors did so get over it. That's how I feel about dalish elfs anyways, since they personally have no  reason to hate the entire race of humans for what some of them did.

Yeah for someone who doesn't get much screen time I REALLY got to hate howe, and killing him was satisfying (although I wish my character could have trash talked down to and then slit his throat in a cutscene instead of just letting him bleed out).

I went through the whole game being like "hey, when do I get to tear up Howe??"

Human noble was the first origin i did and I still think it was the best one, although Gorim in dwarf noble was a great character too.
