I only seem to be able to either kill him or give him to the circle.

When he's in the Dungeon you can free him and tell him to: "Run. I never want to see you again", he escapes.

So many companions disagree with killing him...but giving him to the Circle is great...even if it is a magical lobotomy.

I gave him to the Circle only because it was a more merciful alternative to execution, after he poisoned Eamon. If I was a mage, I'd have a more personal connection and probably would have fought to have Eamon simply release him.

In the dungeon, I was able to tell him to escape, as a warrior, though I had him come along since he wanted to atone.

The problem is that later on in Denerim you've got a Chantry quest "Jowan's Intentions" and you can't complete it because of a bug. I wished the good people at Bioware would fix it in a patch.

In my latest playthru I had Jowan enter the fade to save Conner and to "atone" for his mistakes, but

I haven't finished the ashes quest. Has anybody gone down this road, will I be able to have him released, all my other playthru's I sent him back to the circle

Hmm, in my current playthrough I wanted to let Jowan go, as I've never gone that route before (even though I'm aware the quest will be bugged later) so I told him to run, but he said 'No, I want to right my wrongs, I'm not going anywhere'. How do I convince him to escape? Why didn't he run?

You've got to tell him "Run. I never want to see you again" (what Dinner Squadron posted above).

I tried that on my first playthrough, sent him into the Fade to redeem himself. Despite that, setting him free (even after Eamon is healed) is not something they will go for.

Cyberfrog81 thanks for the info, I guess I should have had him escape.

Other question:

If you release Jarwin saying "Run, I never want to see you again", will you still be able save all, or will you have to slay connor?

Sure, there is a way. Just ask the mages for help. As long as you haven't killed them as well.

Eh, yeah, as I posted, that's what I told him. He said 'I'm not going anywhere, I want to help'.

Thanks brewmaster... last time I let him in the dungeon, and nobody seemed capable to get any idea except slaying connor until jarwin was asked for an idea...

So I tought it might me a bad idea to let him run...

http://dragonage.wik..._Intention#Bugs - How to meet up with Jowan after telling him to run, and complete the quest. Only works in the PC version though.

I think what they should've done was given you the chance to invoke the Right Of Conscription on Jowan (Especially if you play a Mage as he's an old friend of yours that way) and if he survives the Joining, THAT would be his redemption.

I think there were plans in that direction, but they were scrapped.

How did you get him to come along? He tells me he doesn't want to.

I don't think he accompanies the party no matter what you do. But he can make an appearance of his own free will when the time comes to decide about Connor.

Its a misunderstanding, but you can have him come and help sending in a mage into fade to beat up the demon, using blood magic, and this is also how blood magic is unlocked.
Key phrases in dungeon
warden: I'm letting you out
Jowan: then what
Warden: you come with me, thats what
Jowan, i'd only be in the way (or something in that effect)
Warden: then help in any way you can
---------
dialog end, but when you come to connor etc, he will show up,
and a new dialog will take place
new dialog:
Warden: Jowan, what do you have to say about this
Jowan, well, i can send a mage in, but its gonna be a sacrifice
Warden: someone is gonna die either way
all: ok lets do it to the demon before the demon do it to us,
the tramp will be sacrifice, and if you are a mage, you can be sent into the fade
------
in the fade, after a couple of skirmishes, and after you note an autosave
Warden: i'm willing to talk
demon: bla bla
Warden: you have to do something to let you off the hook
demon, mkey, what do you want ?
Warden, i want arcane secrets, teach me blood magic !
demon, ok deal
