Out of curiosity, how are you calculating DPS?

Damage Per Second. I.e. Damage per Cooldown time.

(Base damage) * (damage bonuses summed together) * (protection multiplier) / Cooldown * modifiers

So with Area Overload, 3/5 Damage Upgrades, a Cooldown Upgrade, and no passive or armor bonuses, the calculation would look something like this:

160 * 30 * 2 / 12 * 0.8 = 9600 / 9.6 = 1000 DPS

Something tells me that's not correct. :P

(160 * 1.3 * 2) / (6 * 0.8) = 86.7 against shields, half that against barriers/armor.

The 6s cooldown is for shepard.

Ah. I forgot to convert the 30% to a decimal. Also, I was using Miranda's power for the numbers.

The topic title explains it. Im at Horizon right now and I'd like some input on these two things. I guess my Sentinel is considered a "Caster" Sentinel. I generally sit back and abuse my plethera(sp?) of powers while laying down fire with my Locust and it is quickly becoming my favorite class. Since I really like the Locust, and its very versatile, I have ruled out taking AR training. So that leaves Shotguns or Sniper rifles. Shotguns give me a viable weapon for when I feel like rushing in with Tech Armor up, while the Viper would be immensely helpful for Scions, Ymir mechs, and the final boss. So whats your opinion on this? Im currently leaning towards the Shotgun. And then the question of Power vs Assault armor pops up. The power damage boost and +100% shields is nice with power armor, but on insanity, this does not last very long at all, so the damage boost will only be up very shortly. On the other side of the equation, Assault armor boosts you shields less but the Pulse damage and radius, etc is much greater. The assault armor certainly would mesh well with the Shotgun training. So what's your opinion? Im currently leaning towards the Shotgun/Assault armor build, but I would still mainly be playing like the "Caster" sentinel. Using my powers from cover and occasionally rushing in with my shotgun and assault armor up?

Thanks for listening and any input.

if you're going for that sort of strategy go snipers and power armor

I chose Power Armor, Guardian, and Sniper Rifles.

I use the Viper almost exclusively for the armored elites. The Locust does just fine for the regular enemies and my powers always completely strip enemy defenses, so extra damage isn't really needed in my opinion.

The most widely accepted opinion is that Power Armor is superior to Assault Armor. After having used both and weighing the pros and cons of each evolution, I have to disagree with this notion. Here is why:

It is generally believed that Power Armor grants more shielding; it in fact does not. Both grant exactly the same amount. The half-charged normal shield bonus when Assault Armor detonates equates to the extra 25% present in Power Armor.

Additionally, the fact that the shielding is divided into two parts (pre/post detonation) is actually beneficial. Certain attacks can one hit Power Armor on Insanity, however, no matter how powerful an attack is, it can never break shields and inflict health damage on the same hit; the extra 25% shielding is wasted. Assault Armor would take the same damage in these circumstances, and still grant the half normal shield bonus. This also applies to any situation with high damage attacks when shielding is already low.

Once more, the fact that a portion of the shielding kicks in post detonation in Assault Armor means that in most circumstances, the stun time dealt on enemies is converted into damage-free recharge time for the next Assault Armor that can be used to attack without fear of being killed in one hit. Factor in that Assault Armor has a larger radius and knock back effect, and this little portion of information is incredibly useful. It is possible to rush around most battles with Assault Armor with reckless abandon, killing enemies in record time. The extra damage from the armor detonation doesn't hurt, either.

The only pro Power Armor has is the 15% power damage increase. However, powers, especially on Insanity, aren't nearly as powerful as ammo types. A Sentinel with full AP Ammo dishes out more damage than any power. The only damage-inflicting power on a Sentinel worth using regularly is Overload. Heavy Overload by itself is enough to destroy most shields in one shot without the 15% increase, and any shield that isn't destroyed in one shot will usually have more than 15% left anyways. Really, I don't see why anyone thought Power Armor was better.

Also get Assault rifle training so you can use a battle rifle. You can still get head shots with it while being very well balanced. If you run out of ammo you can switch to an smg untill you get more ammo. That an be more balanced in terms of close - long range combat.

But f you have your heart set on either shotgun or sniper rifle. Get sniper rifle, mainly because your SMG is going to be your close up weapon. So why need another?

Definitely depends on play style. If you're careful, you can keep Power Armor up almost 100% of the time by staying back, and that means a 15% boost to damage for a long, long time.

Also, damage calculations with respect to recharge times is by its nature very rough. For example, it takes time to cast powers if you're behind cover, and popping out of cover more frequently to cast directly translates to taking more damage (meaning you have to stay behind cover logner to wait for shields to recharge). All in all, I'd say it comes down to preference over how you want to play it.

Well if you take shotgun you can use the Locust as a mid-long range weapon, if you have it.

Yes. Assault armor with a shotgun is win.
