My PC :
Intel Dual Core E6750
Ati Radeon HD 4890 (1 Go)
Ram : 2 Go
OS : WinXP SP3 32 bit

The game runs but terribly slow (like 5 fps) during cutscenes, menus and game (= everything). The CPU is not at 100% (about 50-60% on each core), the memory is not at 100% (about 1,3 Go), and my GPU is not overheating (53°c)
I've tried several versions of Catalyst drivers : 9.4, 9.6, 9.7, 9.10, no difference.
I've tried setting my hardware audio acceleration to basic/full, no difference.
I've tried playing full screen 1280x1024 and windowed 1024/768, no difference.
I've tried disabling all sounds, checking and unchecking v-synch or frame buffer, no difference.
I've installed the patch, no difference.
I've tried putting all setting to really low/off and it gets a little better (10 fps instead of 5).

I think that with my comptuer it should not run so slowly, there's obviously a problem.
Any idea to solve this ? Posted Image

Wierd problem you have. I can run medium at much smoother than that but with occasional stuttering. Maybe some other forum people can help you with your issue.

Just for comparing sake

My PC:

Pentium D 2.80GHZ

XFX 9800GT

4GB Ram

Auzentech X-FI Forte

Windows 7 RTM

Maybe I should add that I have several games installed on my computer, including Far Cry 2, World of Warcraft and Mass Effect and I don't have any framerate problems with these. If it's a hardware problem, it doesn't seem to affect anything else except for Dragon Age.

I have also recently run into SEVERE framerate drops during cutscenes. It's happened on the past 3 so far and the last one I had to close DA from the task manager because it just froze. Game has been running fine...cutscenes slow to a crawl.

Vista 64

Quad Core 2.8 (OC'd to 3.3)

SLI'ing 2 GTX 275's

8GB of RAM

PLENTY of cooling.

For me it's not just the cutscenes, it's a framerate problem for everything about the game (well, except for the launcher.

No new idea to help me ?

More tests:
Shadows disabled in .ini file, no difference
Both cores of my CPU are working. Tried to uncheck one of them for the process, game is slower.
Tried to set the priority of the process to Real-Time or High, no difference.

I haven't had an ATI card in a while so I don't remember the driver control panel, but have you checked the settings in it?  Does ATI have per game profiles?  Since you said you did see some performance increase when you lowered the settings.  I am just wondering if somehow your AA has been set super high in the drivers.  Maybe if you tried to force it off?  Just as suggestion as I can't see much of any other reason why all your other games would run fine and this one would be so sluggish.  Especially if you have already tried different/newer drivers and so forth.

My AA is set on "Use Application Settings" (and I don't know how to force it off) and AA is disabled in Dragon Age.

I did check other settings in the ATI Control Center and I can't see anything that would make this game run as slow as this.

I just tried to read the cutscenes in Rad Video Tools and no problem.

Well, I guess as far as my AA theory goes. If you load into the game does it look like it hase a very high level of AA? If not then we can probably rule that out. If so, and you can't force off, try just forcing to 2x or something similar.  Also, have you tried updating the directx drivers?

Howerver, the wrench in the gears of my thinking is the fact that cutscenes are being so sluggish.  Do you have any Antivirus software installed?

The only time I was strong enough to get into the game (that means bypassing the really slow movies and menus), the details were so low and the game looked so bad (but running really slow anyway) that, frankly, I couldn't tell if AA was on or off :)

Now everytime I'm trying something new I don't even get into the actual game, I just watch the movies and the menus... and it's always been really slow and laggy.

I'll try forcing AA and update DirectX drivers and tell you about that.

No antivirus installed.

Have you tried removing the game and reinstalling yet? Running out of other ideas really.

I'm really out of ideas. Its the cut scenes that get me. It's like the game isn't getting the proper priority even though you tried changing it. You could try this program:

http://www.bitsum.com/prolasso.php

It's a little complex but you can tell it to make dao run in game mode and it will automatically prioritize it and reduce other processes so it gets the most it can. Its a free program and uninstalls without issue if it doesnt work.

Really the last suggestion I have left. Except maybe try disabling a different core if you haven't tried already, and of course updating every driver you can think of. Motherboard and all that too.

PROBLEM SOLVED

OMG. I just found what is the problem. Your software didn't help in any way though it's a nice program and I'll use it sometimes.
THE problem is a little utility software that he's always running in the background (about 15 Mo). KiSS PC-Link
This software is used to share my computer with my KiSS movie/music player in the living room. I'm using it for 5 years at least and I wouldn't have suspected it to be such cause of trouble.
I don't know how or why but it's making Dragon Age Origins lags like hell. I hope this information will help other people.

wow... ok... you really had us stumped there... we'd been going back and forth on it for something like 2 days now, Dater finally had some ideas a couple hours ago and got started with you... but we're glad you got that sorted

Do you think it can be added to a FAQ somewhere and reported as a bug for the next patch ? It took me 4 days to find the problem, at least this should help other people with the same problem.

we'll make a note of it... I've got a very long word doc with fixes that will be culled and organized (hopefully tomorrow) and posted to help deal with the influx of people that we expect to see on the weekend

Man do I feel silly. I should have thought to recommend disabling background apps one at a time. That's like troubleshooting 101. haha. Especially since that's not the first instance I've heard of a background app that runs normally but interferes with DAO. Thanks for posting back the fix. We'll at least have the recommendation to systematically disable background apps in the faq.

I know this is 20 days after this thread was resolved, but my boyfriend is experiencing pretty much the same thing on his computer, and doesn't have any tasks that might be interfering.

CPU: Dual Core E6300 clocked at ~3GHz
RAM: 8GB DDR2 800
Video: 896MB GTX-260
OS: Windows 7 64-bit

My computer runs it flawlessly, with basically the same specs, except I have 6GB of RAM and a quad core 2.8GHz Xeon. It also ran it flawlessly with my 8800GT. As with the OP's problem, pretty much every aspect of Dragon Age runs slowly on his computer. Even just bringing up the inventory screen is slow. It's frustrating because I got the video card as an early Christmas present for him so he could play Dragon Age, and it plays about the same as the 7600GT it replaced.
