I'll be honest: I LOVED the Mako! Not so much the random planet exploration, but the "plot" missions made me see that vehicle like a 7th party member. The snowy fields of Noveria, the beaches of Virmire and the heroic drive thru the conduit were all awesomely made IMO ^_^

I think i'm on a minority here, but i would be really happy if the Mako returns for ME3

There was nothing wrong with the Mako, just the environments it was in wich could get very tedious. Unless, of course you can go on the forums with your phone while driving and ironically find a thread about the Mako.

I love the Mako.

It could do with a turbo boost though.

The Mako was fun, the planet design was just lacking.

I actually liked the Mako. And I agree 100% about the 7th party member with the side quests. Alot better than planet scanning, in my book. There are alot of people that would say that neither should be part of the game (either 1 or 2), but I still feel that the Mako was worthwhile. Although I have not gone through the "Hammerhead" content yet (still waiting for one more DLC b4 playthrough), it will be interesting to see how "it" is in comparison.

I hated the Mako on planets that were 90% sheer cliffs. If all the planets were gentle rolling hills it wouldn't be that bad.

But yeah it didn't handle very well at all. Especially in the extreme mountainous terrain that was so prevalent.

I much preferred the second part of the Virmire mission where I was on foot. And I like ME2 so much better because I'm not forced to use the Mako all the time driving over terrain that shouldn't have any vehicle on it at all, let alone a hard to control tank.

I suppose the plot missions were ok, but only the plot missions

I really enjoyed the Mako. I only had problems when planets were loaded down with vertical cliffs. If there was less of that, and more than copy/paste buildings, I'd welcome the Mako back with open arms. It's certainly better than planet scanning.

I really like the idea; there's only so much shooting and lifting people into the ionosphere that you can do in a game before it gets tedious and the mako was a nice change of pace (unlike planet-scanning which I imagine was intended to be the same change of pace, but was more like shifting to first gear while going 120 kph on a highway. But that's besides the point).

The problem was execution. The plot missions were fairly okay (though it always bugged me that Joker's such an ass, he always landes you a map aways from where you should be and yet he demonstrates in the game he can pinpoint target the mako where he wants. Shepard must have stolen his stapler or something).
The random mission were awfull though. I know I've said it before here, but I'll say it again; they look like something an intern churned out with a fractal generator in one morning and if that's not what happened the fact that they look and play like that is bad enough.
If BioWare had grabbed the random maps and touched every single one with a smooth tool to make them more driveable (if I see one more sheer cliff I'm trading the mako in for a mountain goat) and added just something to each one to make them memorable instead of interchangeable, there would have been far less complaining.

I wonder whose bright idea it was to design a moon buggy when a majority of the planets are unweathered rocky mountains.

I didn't have a problem with the Mako to be honest, but I didn't appreciate having to drive it every time I landed somewhere new. I personally enjoy the Hammerhead more, with its jump and turbo. I'd like for them to add more missions involving it into ME2.

+1.

I'm halfway through my second playthrough of ME1 in 2 weeks and I still love the Mako.

And the Hammerhead's a massive disappointment. It's supposted to be a hovertank, but the Mako's more of a tank than it is. The Mako has a turreted main gun (which shoots where you point it under 300m), a coaxial MG (which is good for whittling down shields) and armor and shields that are worth a damn (ie. not taken down by small arms).

Small arms? The thing will go into "critical annoying beeps mode" if you run over a stationary geth drone. Arguably the smallest enemy in the game by volume, excluding the little green Rachni bugs.

The Mako was and is an awesome vehicle. My only issues with it were actually related to the terrain it had to drive on rather than the actual vehicle itself. Actually, that's not entirely true: the 360 version had awful controls, but the PC version fixed that and was awesome, and had the zoom on the cannon too.

By comparison the Hammerhead is a bad joke of a vehicle. It has almost none of the good aspects of The Mako and the only thing it does better is moving. But one could say it moves a little too easily. The lack of an independent cannon hurts it too. That, and if a feather touches it it explodes in a fireball. That said, I blame the integration of it more than the vehicle itself.

Yup. Also the Mako made the outdoor fights ridiculously easy so I usually dismounted to make the fights more challenging. You got more XP that way too.

I've yet to fail a single Hammerhead mission...

Ahh good times! loved the Mako and the exploration it really gave a sense of desolation and scale to the galaxy, the handling and the terrain was no problem on the PC!

The sheer beauty of exploring vast desolated worlds:

No vote from me. It's more complex than the 4 given options. I'm no mako hater but I surely am not a mako lover.

The random exploration didn't mean nothing for me except for a few situations like the orb with the text about Mars and the strange skull for example but even in those situations it was basically reading some text and go to the next one. Mining had no purpose (well it gave money) and the beams and satellites were boring as hell and needed a teammate with decryption. Furthermore some looting in that cases made no sense and the time it take to go to each one was a pain. Thankfully decryption is no more.

There were some interesting missions in terms of plot variety which merged well with the main plot but that was generally the only positive. The plot of the mission changed but all else remained the same and as such seemed the same.

The mako itself could had better maneuverability and speed. An hybrid between the mako and the hammerhead would be the ideal for me if together with some good missions. For me the hammerhead is pretty bad regarding weapons and actual combat but moves very well.
