Okay so I recently was posting in two topics about Zaeed that were so similar I did not even realize that they were two different topics until I saw them both right next to each other (that was briefly confusing) but it's got me thinking about that character and trying to figure out what it is about him that rubbed me so much the wrong way.

Originally I assumed it was just what I've dubbed "Tali syndrome" on these boards, an uncanny valley-esque phenomenon in which a character accrues a hatedom simply because they have such a vocal fanbase, causing players to try and look at the character through the lens of "ZOMG BEST CHARACTER EVAR", and when they turn out to clearly not be the best character evar as they never were in the first place because their fanbase exaggerates everything likable about them to an unprecedented degree, a dislike is developed regarding a character that that person probably would not have given a flying **** about had the vocal fanbase never existed in the first place.

Though this may be part of it, I have concluded it is not the main part. I've realized that the reason I don't like Zaeed is because he's a huge poser. He has all these stories of badass stuff that he does, all these posters adapting chuck norris jokes for him, etc....and what do we ever actually see him do? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. It's disappointing. Zaeed could be completely awesome if he ever actually did badass stuff instead of just talking about badass stuff. That's why Kasumi is such a better DLC character, she's a space ninja and we actually see her be a space ninja on a regular basis. She turns invisible and kills people. Zaeed is a less useful Garrus with a flashy grenade. Kasumi epic backflips onto a gunship and pwns it. Zaeed lights some pool of gasoline on fire and a good 70% of the badass in that scene is attributable to the cameraman. If I have played my cards right, nobody will bother reading far enough to see this sentence and I have the potential to start a flame war about 3 different characters with fanbases capable of being majorly irrational *cackles*. Zaeed in general is just underwhelming and can't walk his talk.

Disappointing waste of a character's potential. Any thoughts on this?

Zaeed's an old man.

Also Kasumi is back by cutscene power to the max. Zaeed isn't.

The fact that Zaeed lets his emotions get the better of him on a mission is central to why I like the character so much. Its not an easy situation like Miranda on her mission. We don't see Zaeed do anything similar to what he said because his mission is about his lust for revenge and the freakout is central to this.

Also I disagree about the Garrus part, I find Zaeed much more useful because he seems to have more health than Garrus. Garrus seems to get downed way too much for my liking.

Setting a refinery alight is pretty badass, as is randomly pistol whipping a batarian.

Meh, every party member gets splatted quickly on insanity if you're not micromanaging them, and overload>inferno grenade plus armor piercing ammo means he does way more damage with his sniper than Zaeed.

You never got to see Zaeed being badass? Then you must be playing a different game.

Garrus does this more than others on Normal, though. Squishy Mordin lasts longer.

If you take Zaeed into the bathroom on the Citadel he will grab that always-peeing Turian and then smash his head through the urinal, then punch his head into the mirror and into the sink, and then knee his head into a wooden stall door.

If your party members are dying you are clearly not killing enemies fast enough.

MAYBE?

I just let Zaeed kill everything, and he will kill everything.

I have tested this. Zaeed, Legion and Grunt are monsters

Garrus will kill a few, but he will die. He will Die.

Yea, personally I felt Zaeed could have been better. He lacks the John McLane moments. To me, he just came across as a psycho and a liability. To be honest, I have no idea why he should be recruited at all. He's almost as unstable as Jack. No sensible commander would include either one on a team that will have to depend on each other in order to survive. But yea, that's just one overall problem I have with the ME2 cast. Because we need the "badass" stereotype characters as well as the goody-goody ones we have these unstable people that make no sense if you think about them for a few moments. Would you honestly trust these people with your life?

Unless you believe he's really 40. Which I don't. I'm just saying, there are people who do and we don't have any good, solid evidence that he isn't beyond the improbability of it.

As for the topic itself, I actually like Zaeed well enough. He's not nearly as psychotic as people tend to portray him is but I also do not think he is, in any shape or fashion, the most interesting character on the ship - not even second or third or fourth. He's simply not developed enough.

There is a sort of appeal, however, to a character who's a badass merc and has no qualms about saying as much while also giving ego bumps to his commanding officer. It's like Wrex, but without the moral complexity and tragic past. I can certainly see why he's appealing. I can also see why he ticks some people enormously off.

In the end, though, there is a certain element that tends to get forgotten... namely that he tends to get everyone on his team killed in his stories.

All squadmates use the same AI. And the game gives you buttons to tell people where to go, they're very useful for any squadmate who's out in the open when they shouldn't be.

You do realise judging by the events in Zaeed's past he is OLDER than 40. That makes him an old man.

No my friend; we are all descendants of Zaeed...... Kinda like Fry is his own grandpa in Futurama.
