So my High Dragon acts and looks tough but seems to just dance around and not make any blows at my character.  Do I need a script to get him to beat me up?  I set the AI to High Dragon and he just isn't tough.

You should also try adding the appropriate abilities in the talent dialogue. I would suggest adding scripting to jazz up the encounter anyway, Archdemon/High Dragon fights are fairly static without it.

You also need to have your area id (local int on the area) defined in an extension of areadata.xls and make sure that you have assigned a rank such as Elite Boss to your creature.

Rank didn't seem to do much for him either. Made him take more hits but still wasn't swinging back or didn't seem to be.

Some ideas :
  • Is it a custom creature or did you try with the resource "high_dragon.utc"?
  • Did you put the creature in the area directly in the area in the toolset, or is it spawned by a script? In the latest case, CreatePool or CreateObject should be done under the event EVENT_TYPE_AREALOAD_PRELOADEXIT; otherwise, autoscaling may not be done and your creature may have level 0 (you can check with GetLevel).
  • Does your creature have a custom script? If yes, try with creature_core first.
Hope it can help...

I just made a creature resource and added it to the area. Should I set the min and max level on the creature perhaps? Or do I need to edit the areadata.xls ? I'm still not sure.

Maybe you should try with "high_dragon.utc" creature (in _Core_Creatures\\Dragons folder). It will allow you to determine if your problem comes from your creature resource or from elsewhere.

Should I set the min and max level on the creature perhaps?

Normally, 0 is fine (no minimum and no maximum).

Or do I need to edit the areadata.xls ?

Not sure it will solve your problem, but you should anyway. Cf. the creature tutorial in the wiki: "Note that the level of creatures spawned in a given area is further
limited to the range specified in areadata.xls. Unless the area variable AREA_ID
is set manually in the toolset to a valid line id in that table,
creatures spawn at level 1.".

Thinking about it, here are 2 other leads.

Does the creature have the group _Hostile? Does your hero have the group _PC? If you changed the later manually to _Neutral for exemple, it can lead to strange results.

It may also be an export problem, as in this discussion. You can try to remove all files in:
  • My Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age\\AddIns\\your_module\\core\\override\\toolsetexport
  • My Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age\\AddIns\\your_module\\module\\override\\toolsetexport
then export again from the toolset.

Hope you will find what the problem is.

Hi,

I think this one is worth trying.
  • "Check in" your creature resource.
  • Right-click --> "Properties".
  • Module --> check if it's the name of your module.
  • Owner --> check if it's the name of your module.
The problem can happen if you copied an existent resource and then edited it to make your own creature.
