For starters, I am not asking about how the game will end in terms of lore or who will be the final "boss".
What I would like to know is, once we complete the final portion of the main quest, will the game end and we be taken to the "new game/load game" screen as in Mass Effect, or will we be able to continue playing?
The reason is, that when I finished Mass Effect I still had some side quests to do, plus I hadn't installed the DLC, so if I wanted to finish of those quests I had to either load up a previous saved game, or start a new one.
In the age of DLC's and such I am really hoping for a system where by you never truly "finish" a game, so that once a new one pops in you can continue with your character develpoment even after you have finished the main quest.
Anyone else agree?
Question about the mechanics of the game end

When you finish the main quest you'll get to play a playable epilogue, but you won't be able to complete any quests.
So there's no free roaming after the end fight (like Oblivion) but there's also not just credits playing (pretty much every Bioware game).

I agree with Nephilia, a New Game+ mode (starting the story over, but keeping character stats) would be great as well as the ability to continue on in the world.

Thanks for the info Abtacha1982.
It's expected for the game to "end" once the final "boss" or whatever is killed in old games, but when the game is expected to continue onwards for 2 years (as has been stated) via DLC's then there needs to be a way for characters to play those after having "completed" the game once without resorting to previous save games or other gimmicry. :S

Theres always what they did in Fallout 3... have a quest that continues from the last part of the game after the "game over" I wouldnt mind that

Agreed, it was something that rather annoyed me in the past also, given how much added content there is. And with DLCs in so many games now, it just... yeah, wouldn't be that difficult for them to say "Here's what happened as a result of your deeds", roll credits, and let you keep playing. >.<

One of the devs said something that led me to understand that there's a point before the finale where you should be able to load from if you want to play through a DLC with a character that's beaten the game. You'll still have to replay the finale, but hey... Until they pull a FO3 and extend the ending, I think that's the best we're gonna get.

Well if Marik333 is right then I suppose that's an adequate compromise, but I'd prefer a F3 type DLC expansion, or better yet, just program it into the game to let one keep playing after the "end" (as I think you can do in Oblivion). Anyway, I hope the Dev's read this and think about this in future Bioware games.

Fernado also stated that we will be able to play the DLCs on a completed game so you have that going for you.

Yeah Neph, with Oblivion after the main quest chain is completed there's some slight alterations to the capital as a result of the final battle, a few changed phrases from folks in the zone, and... that was bout it. You could go and do any side quests and stuff you wanted, continue leveling, etc.

There David answered it. You won't have to load backwards or even start a new game.

That's good to know, but i hope that at some point there will be an expansion where you can continue with your character into new lands (and continue to level them...like Mass Effect 2 i guess).
