I love Mass Effect and the choices but there are Pros and Cons to both. Today I am going to say my Major Pluses and minuses about both games. And what I wish to see and hope will happen more in Mass Effect Three. I will start with this. I'll compare ME1 to FF9. This is a story/gameplay comparison.

Final Fantasy 9
+ Storyline
- Liniarity
- Combat System
+ Romance
+ Deep Plots with 'EVERY' character you party with.

Mass Effect
+ Storyline
+ Open System
+ Great Combat
- Romance is Lacking Depth
- Half the characters chatter a story, you do a chore for em. The End of that.

The Romance in ME felt Ham Handed as an excuse to squeeze it in 'because' There is no real deep story and you almost feel that the relationship is rushed from ziltch to sex. In ME2 I feel like Shephard is almost solely in it for the Sex. Same with partner.

The liner advantage was Zidane's Romance with Garnet. It was long, in depth, detailed with a lot of care and personal bonding. In the end it didn't even have a kissing scene but you could feel the emotion behind it. The entire working of their personal story to get to that point. It was beautiful. From his attempts to hit on her, to his helping her cope with the stuff that happens. All the way tell the end where the apex of it all ends in a hug that is somehow sweeter then Shepards fully culminated romance.

Next was the fact that Every Character you got in FF9 had a deep and involved story. From the Knight, to the Mage to even the embarrassing chef thing. Every character had deep plot. And Your character got embroiled into each of their lives deeply.

Mass Effect lacks that. It's a charm that Bioware hasn't picked up yet. It's sad. But Chrono Trigger, the Breath of Fire series, and many others have deeper Characters.

I can still remember Chrono Trigger, the Final Fantasy personalities. Sure they are Animeish, but they have good story and depth behind them. While the Animation may be a bit flat. The writing behind it isn't.

Mass Effect may look crisper and have better character image. But the JRPGs generally have more realistic personalities and bonding. I wish to god someone would take the pluses of both and throw them together.

Imagine Mass Effect with the depth of bonding and such with your squad mates that you have in a JRPG. Imagine having depth of character beyond do a chore for them. Getting involved.

One story I liked was Zidane helping Vivi come to grips with the fact that he was basically a machine that was going to die in less then five years and helping him find himself despite all of this and shape him as a being.

Or the story of the Loyal Knight who followed the Princess Around trying to protect her from the scoundrel (You), all the while being forced to work with you to save the Princess his absolute loyalty is sworn. Despite it taking him against his own Knighthood.

None of the ME side characters comes close to those. Not a single one of them.

What did Shephard do for Wrex? Hired him, took him on a hunt, Did a fetch quest and that was it.

ME2 had some good Character Missions, but... after the missions the Characters sort of died off in a way. For example. Jack... You recruit her... Awesome... You talk with her a few times, help her with her Loyalty Mission... No more from Jack unless she is your romance interest. Even then it's a few flirts and a Sex Scene.

I don't diss one or the other. But they both have great points. Shephard is as Deep in my opinion as any RPG character can be. Aided by the fact he has a voice and a randomness to him or her. But his crew lacks that special something.

What I want to see is that depth, that total encompassing 'bond' between shephard and his surviving crew. I want to see the depth that makes the romance worth chacing beyond some 'Alien Tail'.

I don't mind Sex Scenes, but I wish they were done with some depth.

Shephard's Team is hollow when put against any of that.

Can't we give Shephard deep involvement? Can't he get fully engrossed in things for the long haul and actually have 'that' kind of depth?

Most of the bonds of Shephard are story swaping. He never had the long slow path of changing someones core being before over a long journey were he helped a member of his crew discover himself. He never shaped anyone as deep as a true novel character.

Sure he can turn Kaiden and Ashley's Personalities various ways. But was it a long course of life, of personal encounders and dangerous things happening? No, this all happened on the 'On ship conversations'. I never saw Commander Shephard holding onto a member of his crew as the Bulkheads of a Station Colapsed around him while he stood ready to sacrifice all to save them. I never saw him personally get involved in someone's life beyond a single mission were he knocked a few heads and helped resolve a loose end.

Tali's was the deepest he had in that aspect, and after that was done, a few conversations and she's no different as a character in the end.

Completeness is what is needed!

Take Shephard, the crew you have, get them all deeply involved, envolve all of their whole lives, get Shephard embroiled in them. Shape the Universe by deep involvements, personal and deep storylines between him and his companions. No more 'One Shot' Kasumi's. If you make someone, make it deep. Shale from Dragon Age is a perfect example of that.

The Liner points of Mass Effect is the fact that, Good, Bad, it all ends similer. Rather Jack goes one way or the other in her 'mission' only affects 2 lines of dialog later.
