They decided to release the sidequests as DLC instead of including them in the game. True story.
My one main complaint about this game is sidequests.

yes I have also complains about the sidequest architecture.. first you save some bloodmages in denerim from the inquisations stake and then a minute later in the same city but in another quest - you have to kill bloodmages! which quest is good, which is bad!? I dont get it!
2 different types of blood mages? Some are good blood mages and some are evil blood mages?

I don't know how this fares later in the game, but I actually like the fact that many quests seem tied into each other (speaking about Redcliffe & Mage Tower specifically), and can also contain optional parts that you would complete without them being nonsensically out of the way of the MQ.
I'd rather get sent into some random forest as a part of a larger quest, then just wander in randomly.

Ooow.. I forgot.. the quest lasts actually longer - a charakter quest later in ozemmar, for Shane, is also included in that DLC.. but I wasn't in ozemmar yet.. the quest could feature in the worst case.. only a few dialog lines.. uh I am so curious!

the only side quests I thought were really weak, were the the I need 20 dingleberrys, it should of been secure a new source so you have to venture into the woods find out why there is a disruption or find a new one and help set up a trade caravan.
But otherwise I have to admit unless there is full voice I dont want side quests, mass effect and dragon have spoiled me.

I, personally, enjoyed the sidequests. Some of them had good connection to the main quest and weren't as annoying as in other games.

The cynical side of me is inclined to agree with this as a distinct possibility.
Putting that pessimistic thought aside, I find one of DA's weakest aspects are its so called sidequests. I agree that Baldur's Gate 2 didn't make the most sense if you were playing a heroic character or filled with rage to smite Irenicus. But those sidequests were for me, the heart of the game. Heck, pretty much all the NPC arcs in BG2 barely qualified as urgent to the PC. Maybe to individual NPCs you travel with, but not to your character's goal of uncovering Irenicus' plot and saving your childhood friend.
Yet, it was experiences such as dealing with Jaheira's Harper intrigues, or clearing out Nalia's keep that made BG2 memorable for me. The central plot had its moments, but most of the witty NPCs and high adventure took place when I ventured off the beaten path. Meeting Firkraag in his true form for the first time felt epic, for example. Saving Trademeet and having statues erected in my party's honor came across as a true accomplishment. Getting my stronghold, finding a holy avenger, and destroying a small army of shades... those sort of things defined BG2 for me.
In DA everything is tied so tightly to the main plot that I often feel it's not only OOC, as BG2's sidequests often were, but also boring. And honestly, those job board quests from the Collective, Irregulars, and Elusive are tedious and dull, and if it wasn't for my desperate need to save up sovereigns, I wouldn't even bother with them.
That's why Orzammar is my favorite area in DA thus far... because it actually has a few real side quests that at least approach the kind I saw in BG2, KotOR, and JE. The sort of quests where I can interact with NPCs and solve their problems or screw up their lives depending on my character's moral compass. It's way more fun than doing random Fed-ex tasks for NPCs I never meet. Short as it may be, Warden's Keep is an example of a true sidequest in my eyes. Ditto with Stone Prisoner, or even something as simple as getting a Chantry opened in Orzammar.
I suppose I shouldn't be surprised after seeing how Mass Effect handled its planetside questing. It was a miracle when I ran across an NPC that spoke a few lines before shooting at me.
Bottom line: I feel BioWare dropped the ball big time with DA's sidequests, and it's disheartening to think that those supposed fifty extra quests that were added after DA's delay probably consisted primarily of job board stuff and random dungeons such as the Blood Mage manor in Denerim.
