For those who are interested, here are my results on a throw-away character I made to test out whether you get a bonus when the game alters your headgear choice.

Initial Armor Set
No Helm
N7 Chestplate
N7 Shoulder Guards
Off-Hand Ammo Pack
Stimulator Conduits

class: Soldier
Bonus Power: Armor Piercing Ammo

This set was designed to give no bonuses to Health or Shields, giving me a baseline to work with. No upgrades of any kind have been researched or bought. Also, no Skill Points have been allocated, so I have no boosts to Health or Shields from skills.

I stopped off on Omega before heading to my test mission to get a baseline on what my Health and Shields were. They were as follows:

Health: 250
Shields: 250

Throwing on the N7 Breather Helm and coming back to Omega gave the following:

Health: 263
Shields: 250

Finally, I put on the SENTRY Interface to get it's numbers. They were as follows:

Health: 250
Shields: 262

So far, everything is exactly as expected. For the actual test itself, I started the mission 'Explore Normandy Crash Site' with the SENTRY Interface as my designated helm. From there, I simply landed and checked my numbers. They were as follows:

Health: 262
Shields: 250

These numbers match the numbers I had wearing the N7 Breather Helm. Therefore, when the game replaces your helm with the N7 Breather Helm, you lose the bonus of the helm you're wearing and get the bonus of the N7 Breather Helm.

As far as I'm concerned, this means there are only 3 helms worht using: the N7 Breather Helm, the Death Mask, and the Recon Hood. In other words, Health, Paragon/Renegade, or Weapon Damage.

Good thing I like the look of the Recon Helm, because I'm stuck with it.

It's not really a big deal to go to the captain's cabin and switch the headgear as long as you know what is the requirement of your next mission. Speaking of which... is there a compiled list of missions (assignements would be welcome aswell) that force the breather helmet on you?

Thank You for testing it. It's really sad to lose the helm bonus in such circumstances but it sounds logical after all. If the N7 helmet, or any other environmentally sealed helmet, could be worn over the visor or interface we could have kept the bonus. But that is it. Personally I found the Blood Dragon Armor one of the best environmentally sealed armors, even playing as soldier the bonus to power damage is always well accepted.

Thank You again for your data.

I personally wish they'd have gone with a system a bit more like ME1, with upgrades that do specific things. Like a shield booster that ups your shielding, no matter the type of armor piece you have on. Instead of full armor sets like the Cerberus armor and Blood Dragon, etc, have a few different types of each piece (like they do now, for aesthetic purposes) and different upgrades you can buy/find. Not the endless insanity that was the ME1 upgrade system, but a more streamlined version.

But hey, maybe Bioware will implement this for ME3. (*crosses fingers*)
