one of the things I love about this game is that the story actually presents a lot of red herrings about the plot. I mean, on my first time through (I made it a point to avoid all spoilers for this game) I had so many theories & ideas about the Protheans, the Reapers and other characters that it was nice to be thrown off track when I found out the truth instead of, for example, a particular character's shifty eyes of obviousness in DAO. :P

'course, there were a few parts where I wondered how I was the only person realizing what was going on but that tends to be typical when given information from a third-person perspective anyway.

Haha yeah I always thought of the Protheans as human (dunno why) and the Reapers as gods, not machines.

For my 2nd playthrough, I read a lot of lore and the game made an even bigger impression on me. Especially the finale.

Actually, I thought the same thing. I was expecting to find out Humans were Protheans that were hidden away on earth and had their memories wiped to hide from the Reapers.

I'm glad we're not protheans. Way too Halo for me.

Something else that occurred to me earlier: on the Citadel, you hear about that Krogen group suing Binary Helix because they paid them to find a cure for the Genophage and never did. Since Saren was a major shareholder in the company, I'm assuming he kept the cure for himself.

Humans made quite an impression on the galaxy didn't they?

That would explain Virmire. Binary helix probably could have come up with a cure, since Virmire (and the events of ME2) show how the genophage is far from permanent/uncureable.

On my first playthrough, I thought we were going to learn that the keepers were the Shadow Broker. The keepers were everywhere on the Citadel, and had access to everything. People spoke freely in front of them, and did their business in front of them, as if they weren't there. It seemed like a perfect setup for the Shadow Broker. And the way the volus agent on the Citadel described how the Shadow Broker keeps opposing sides balanced, never letting one side get too much stronger than another, sounded like the way the keepers would want things to run.

One thing I'm curious about: what was with Saren walking around "listening"? Was he listening to Sovereign?

My friends were highly recommending ME2, but also said I should play through ME1 first, so I really rushed through ME1 at lightning speed. I finished it in about 13 hours. That was a big mistake. I really was confused between the various aliens and enemies and kept mixing-up Protheans vs. Reapers vs. Geth.

It was only after playing-through and really getting into the lore of ME2 that I realized how much I ruined my initial foray into the Mass Effect universe. I've since gone back and replayed ME1 twice (once at a slower pace, and another that was even more thorough) and have really come to appreciate everything it offered (and, of course, I'm now on my fourth playthrough of ME2; not to mention reading the novels).

Anyway, I wish I could go back and replay ME1 again "for the first time" with a don't-rush-through it mindset. I didn't realize at the time how rich of a world and story I was going to be entering.

Yeah, I'm taking this second playthrough just as slow as the first. I was almost tempted to rush through just to import into ME2 but decided I really wanted to make sure this was the character I wanted to bring along (plus I'm nabbing a bunch of quests I never realized I missed the first time).

I decided to go with a Colonist/Ruthless/Soldier this time around (first playthrough was Colonist/Sole Survivor/Vanguard). Basically I want Shepard #2 to walk that fine line between trying to atone for what happened on Torfan, and still getting the job done by any means necessary. :P

Since I lent my copy of ME2 to my brother in law, I'm replaying ME1 on insanity, trying to get the best possible situation for ME2 and hopefully ME3. Definitely enjoying re-living the ME1 universe though, when Biotics meant something on insanity.

You should try Earthborn, your former gang trys to get your help on the citadel also Spacer allows you to speak to your mother and there is a newscast about her in ME2. Also explore systems again as more planets become available. On my 4th or 5th playthrough i found a planet infested with rachni.

I just started a new playthrough 3 days ago. I initially transferred a Spacer/Ruthless/Soldier over to ME2, then I wanted to try a different class and background, so I restarted ME1 as a Colonist/War Hero/Infiltrator. I am constantly amazed at how many new things I find. I'm on my 5th playthrough of ME1 and still run into things I've never seen before. What an amazing game.

I did give Earthborn a shot and was pleasantly surprised that out of all of the personal quests, that was the most connected to the main plot overall.

One thing I've noticed in general though: I've bumped the difficulty up to Hardcore for my second playthrough but it seems like the game is actually EASIER than it was on normal. I'm not sure if it's because I'm using an AR instead of a SG now or what but... I'm actually killing enemies quicker/dying less than I did the first time (except on the quest where the researchers were turned into Husks. That one kicked the crap out of me a few times this go around).

the assauly rifle when its upgraded is pretty damn powerful and best all around weapon, makes you not want to use any other gun. husks, however, in number close ground fast enough to negate its effectiveness. You should use wrex and/or liara and use their biotics to lift, throw, singularity the bastards so you can clean up with the AR. A neat feature for soldiers is their ability to regenerate and increase damage. My easiest playthroughs are with soldiers in mass effect 1. I know biotics are are really effective in ME1 but its easy for me to just bring biotic companions and use their abilities by shutting off squad abilities in the option menu.

I found the SG to be nice for that too. Had a Heatsink and Frictionless in the Spectre shotgun and could pretty much one-shot enemies from across the room infinitely.
