I don't suppose this is an actually an answer for this question, but I am curious.

When talking to Wrex about Saren, you learn they met once.

Wrex was part of a team hired to take down a spaceship and kill the crew.

He mentions that Saren was searching the ship for something, but he didn't know what it was.

Do we ever learn why Saren attacked that ship?

My guess is the ship transported either a prothean relic or a Dragon teeth.

It's never stated what Saren was looking for, but for some reason, I figured he found a Rachni egg.

You might be onto something: bringing krogan to a potential fight with rachni sounds exactly like Saren's thinking.

Nah, the Rachni egg was on a Rachni ship. The ship Wrex and the others attacked was a Volus freighter.

A prothean beacon is maybe possible. I always thought he must have found the one on Virmire after the one on Eden Prime (because there would be no need to attack Eden Prime if he already had a beacon), but maybe he just wanted to prevent that anyone else found it. That's pure speculation though. I don't have a clue what he searched on the Volus ship.

It was medical supplies on a volus ship.  I always guessed he needed them for his little krogan project on Virmire.  No proof for that part, strictly a guess.

Wrex doesnt say exactly when he met Saren, only that he had met him. It could have been anywhere from 1 month, to 20 years before the events of ME1.

Given the background info Anderson gives you on Saren, it may well have occurred before Saren found Sovereign, on and a Council sanctioned mission.

My bet is that Saren was looking for 'genetic specimens' for his Krogan army. It's not explicitly mentioned, but if the mercenaries were largely Krogan, Saren might have been using the attack on the merchant vessel as a way of discerning the 'quality' of the stock. Obviously, apart from Wrex, he wasn't impressed if he killed all the mercenaries at the end of it.

"Medical supplies" probably Saren wanted some of that medical marijuana...

Naw, for real though, I bet Saren needed alot of money in order to buy everything he needed to build up his geth army, his cloning facility, and to buy anything else he might of needed in order to execute his plans. So he probably set up different sources of income (like investing in Binary Helix) and organized criminal operations to jack anything that he needed.

He was doing Sovereign's personal quest, no doubt.



Wrex never said they were all Krogan but maybe "they all died within a week" because Saren was testing a Genophage cure on Krogan mercs but used the job as an excuse to get them together instead of coming right out with it.

My guess is stuff for the genophage cure, something for $$$$$$$, or some red spice.
