And I do use the melee/reload trick with the Claymore.

Thanks for the suggestions/input. I think I'll probably go with the sniper. The Viper would probably be good for bringing down shields, then I could switch up and charge.

Hrm. Probably need to look at those videos Slim posted. I haven't really worked with the Scimitar very much-- it just seemed weak, despite its fast reload. When I charge, I want the baddie to go down immediately, so I can either dive for cover or zip off on another charge.

You mean the research bonuses? So, a Claymore can one shot, but the Evi never will?

Eviscerator will stun...that is the key. Takes more shots, but keeps enemy off balance. Supplement with cryo or incinerate. I just LOVE charging a frozen target...all sorts of fun.

Not alone indeed. I love the Katana too! I even made a video dedicated to it.
SuperMedbh, it's all about how the gun feels in your hands. You can watch all the videos (check the sticky) and read all the stats you want, but that can only give you an idea, not a conclusion. The best thing to do is just play with each gun. Eventually one (or more) will just click. It's less of a conscious decision and more of something that just happens.
I've taken three Vanguards through Insanity, but I don't have a favourite shotgun. They're all good. I don't feel under or overpowered with any of them. I also barely touch any of the other weapons. Even though the Viper is an absolute beast, I seem to forget that I have it and it just collects dust most of the time.
I play like a bulldozer, but everyone is different. That's my point. It sounds like the Viper might be best for you based on how you play, but who knows. The Claymore might grow on you after a while too. It took a long time for me, that's for sure. To each their own. At this point I love them all and my favourite is whatever I'm using at the moment.

It's my favourite too. Just the right balance of power, fire rate and shots per clip.
Those extra two shots per clip over the Evi makes a huge difference for me.

@Nexolek: If the videos in your sig is you, I play a lot like you do. Even little idiosyncratic stuff like punching fragile crates so they don't trip you up later. Also, Gogol Bordello makes awesome shotgunning music.

I'm a big fan of the Eviscerator. If I was gonna do another vanguard playthrough I'd probably grab sniper training just to have a better final boss weapon than the Carnifex.

Yep, everything in my sig is me. I only used Overload on health 4 times, but for a reason. The first one was to overheat the Trooper's weapon because Charge was still on cooldown (which saved my life). The second one on the Prime was for the same reason, but it came long after I hit the button (which happens when a squadmate is behind cover and in range of the enemy). The last two on the Destroyers were to insta-gib them (first one saved my life, second was for fun). Otherwise, I used it for shields

Hah, I had that tab open for a long time...
I had Start Wearing Purple in mind for a loooong time before I made that video. I love those guys!

Why anyone would bother picking the Claymore is beyond me. What that daft thing is doing hanging out in the same tier as WMDs like the Revenant and the Widow is one of the game's great mysteries.

I've yet to come across a better bonus weapon for a Vanguard than the Viper. It single-handedly compensates for practically every issue the Vanguard has outside of shields. Great fot taming the battlefield or softening up targets at range before charging or pulling.

This, this, this, this, and this are just a few examples I could think of as to why someone would "bother" to pick the Claymore. It is most definitely in the same tier as the Widow and Revenant. I've played through two Vanguard Insanity runs with the Claymore and one with the Viper. Neither run was more difficult or less fun. Again, it's all personal preference, but as I have always maintained, there is no best (or worst) shotgun. They are all murder machines

I'm not really sure what is in those videos that would say the Claymore is particularly better than any other Shotgun - most of what was on offer there was showing how cool Inferno Ammo and Charge is.
It's a matter of fact that the Scimitar has the highest non-glitching DPS, and the Vanguard isn't a character that is particularly vulnerable to armoured opponents, so it's not like the Claymore's better armour penetration matters. Scimitar is by far my fave, but hey, whatever floats your boat.
