I am completely indifferent to Thane. Don't love him, don't hate him. He's a decent squad mate in combat, and his loyalty mission is diverting enough. He doesn't really leap off the page though. He and Jacob are both kind of blah to me.

I agree that they're this kind of thing a lot. I don't really care since the only male LIs that I would consider having for female PCs would be Alistair, Kaidan, or Garrus.

I think it should be at least expected seeing as how both games are from Bio. But I see where you're coming from, Collider.

Dislike Thane? No, I've actually said in this thread that I think Thane's pretty cool. But he's also dying, I wouldn't have any female Shepard I play romance him for that single reason. Too much potential for heartbreak. Nothing against Thane or Thane romancers, just not my cup of tea should I play as female Shep.

Oh, fair enough then. Posted Image

I like Thane as a character, even if he's got Carth syndrome, but I really don't understand what his role in the story is. He's one of the few party members who seems completely extraneous to the story. He doesn't even get a part to play in the suicide mission!

His role is uber cool assassin =p

I get that, it's just, what does he contribute to the fight against the Collectors? Tali/Legion/Kasumi all contribute technical expertise, Miranda/Garrus/Jacob are good lieutenants for Shepard, Grunt/Zaeed provide nice muscle, Jack/Samara provide biotic goodness, Mordin invents the protection against the Collector bugs, and Thane does... what?

I think he's an interesting character, but I really don't understand why Cerberus wanted him on the team. To kill people? I guess, but assassination never comes up as a plot point.

He romances some female players and can be used in your personal squad. Cerberus wanted all of their bases covered - why not recruit one of the galaxy's best killers.

Why not indeed?

Intellectually, I understand your point - he might have come in use. My point is that, narratively, he did not. That's a slight failing on BioWare's part. If he shows up in ME3, he should contribute further to the overall story, though it's unclear how that would happen.

Being a romance isn't enough - all the other romances have a part to play in the story. Thane seems like he's just there to be the Estrogen Brigade Bait (which, officially, actually is the case).

It's just weird that Thane is one of the only characters (and the most major character/only LI) that has no major role he can play in the Suicide run. Even Kasumi can safely do the vents, and I've heard someone report they had Zaeed successfuly lead a fire team.

Anyway, to answer the question I'm solidly in the "on the fence" group. I like him as a character, but don't use him a lot and am only now after multiple PTs doing a Thane romance (and it was really just to get some breakup dialogue.).

With his good blend of biotic powers and sniper rifle, he's my favorite squadmate to take on my team, and he's full of interesting information. Yes, he has the classic "wife and son" syndrome, but it doesn't completely define his character. After all, you don't find out about his family til the middle of the game, and you've already had quite a few other topics of discussion.

He's also pretty good for holding the line when you head to the final boss.

If you have a low amount of squad mates alive, any character can lead the second fire team and survive.

To clarify, Zaeed sucks as a fire team leader - he'll either get killed or get your tech specialist killed (depending on if he heads the first or second team). But he's great as a "hold the line" guy and will guarantee the survival of almost everyone else holding the line if he's loyal.

Depends on your perspective. On my part, I don't think every character has to be some a tie to the story. Take Zaeed and Kasumi for example, many people at least like the latter, yet they have zero relevance to the main story. Sure, they can be used in the suicide mission, but you don't need them. Realistically, not everyone on the Dossier is going to be related to the Collectors in some way, TIM is most specifically looking for specialists just in case what they face needs it.

You don't need them, but they're still useful. Thane isn't. But I should probably stop on this train of thought, because I actually do like the character.

Well, the way I'm looking at it is that Thane can be fun to have around. Of course we need to have some squad mates have a tie to the plot, but having fun nonessentials isn't that bad.

As I said in the poll section...
I hate his excuse for killing.
This "Thane's body kills people. Thane's mind and soul don't" nonsense...
I think he's a hypocrite. That's the reason why I like Morinth/and hate Thane.
They are both no saints (Thane killed for money, Morinth for pleasure), but Morinth makes no excuses for what she is.

As far as I can tell, Zaeed, Grunt, and Thane provide nothing but muscle. Nothing against them but they're all extraneous. If you have some characters it eliminates your need for others though so I see no problem. If you have Miranda, no need for Garrus. You have Tali, no need for Legion and so on and so forth. The only on you truly need is Mordin.
