Think J.J. Abram's Star Trek Image IPB

I'd rather not.

That movie never happened.  NEVER HAPPENED!!

LOLs! Hey, to each his own, right? Image IPB

And I was simply trying to explain the concept of AU, since some folks were trying very hard to figure out where exactly the story in this new DLC would fit in the "canon" story...

OK, can someone please explain to me how, in this world with so many possibilities, so many different choices and different outcomes, can there be a "canon" story? I understand that even in Awakening your choices are taken into consideration (well, except if your Warden chose the US and you still wish to import that character, then it's assumed that there was no US... although I think I read a post somewhere on here with a quite a valid point, I found - if your Warden decided the US, then that would be the end of the story for that particular character, and so you either have an option of starting the Awakening story as an Orlesian Warden or choose to import a different character/ending from Origins).

So, yeah, have been trying to grasp the concept of "canon" in the Origins universe. Image IPB

Well, while there can't be a "hard and fast" canon as far as certain actions (for instance, recruiting Loghain, since I didn't do this with one character, but am planning on doing it with another, etc.), there do have to be certain canonical constants in order for BioWare to maintain a cohesive story across chapters/expansions.

I mean, these are like the ultimate "choose your own adventure" books (remember those, kids who went to school in the 80s?). And while those all had multiple endings, there were a set number of endings.
So, it's the magic of choose-your-own-adventure! [smilie]../../../../images/forum/emoticons/wizard.png[/smilie]

While not everything in a video game like this fits neatly into an official canon, there are still certain constants (i.e. the pages that all possible storylines of a choose your own adventure book share).

But... wait... now... maybe... no.... shoot... now I'm confused.

Am I the only one who would have been way happier with another item pack (like Feast Day Gifts & Pranks), but with weapons and armor?

EDIT/NOTE: I mean quality full sets of weapons and armor

Here you see how opinions can be different....

I think weapon and armor DLC is nothing but a cheap way to get the money of MMO-addicts who crave to get the best equipment.

Of course, Dragon Age needs better-looking armor, but modders do a great job at providing those already.

There's really not all that many great looking user made armors, unless your into those ecchi/breaking the immersion/show me them <cough> armors that seem to get made a lot. I've only found around six or seven really good ones, and then reskins other people made for them, and thats on the official site and the nexus.

This DLC seems to be taking some kind of shot at the popular, play both sides (good/evil) aspects of mmos, WoW Horde/Alliance, LOTRO Heros vs Monsters, Warhammer Order vs Destrucion, and so on, and so on. It's something that doesn't really seem to fit this game. It's really more of a seperate mini-game, like DA:J in my opinion. It's related, but seperate, short, and possibly adding a bit of lore, but likely won't carry that much weight. More along the lines of what Infinte Dungeons module was for NWN, sure it had some Forgotten Realms lore, and you could get items that you could save on a char, but not all that impotant in the grand scheme.

After looking at the screen shots- I just had a flash back - all the way to the 70's a TV show called Dallas- where Bobby had a dream --- Maybe this is an Alistair Dream!! cool!

"Outside the box" stuff like this is an interesting situation.

As we have seen many people seem to hate it almost entirely on the fact its 'non-canon' or 'why be the enemy?'

Each to his own.

Don't like it for whatever reason, I can respect that.

I personally think this sounds pretty sweet!

Maybe it is alittle 'sick' to want to bring chaos to the world. I usually play as the paragon of good, and I think this might make a good little change of pace!

LOL nice pic alistar is doomed but if theres a way to lose the battle as well as win that'd be really cool.

I might be more interested if this was possible just to see if he could actually do it.  I definitely wouldn't mind losing lmao

I'm as big of a Dragon Age fanboy as they come, but this is just pathetic IMO. BioWare really needs to learn how to do DLC. I want to continue to play MY DANG CHARACTER PERIOD. I also bet 75% of other posters feel the same way.

Hmm... interesting. I hope it gives us more insight into how things actually work in Darkspawn ranks rather than just being a "kill kill destroy EVERYTHANG" sort of thing--tie the story up with The Architect somehow, maybe?--but I'm not keeping my hopes up. I'm leaning towards not getting it at the moment, would rather see the video for myself first before making any decisions, but if I do decide to get it I think it will be out of curiosity more than anything.

I rather would have seen an announcement regarding a patch, though. Just saying.

Well, seeing as how this is an alternate ending to the base game, and we don't see the Architect in game until the Awakening expansion, I doubt it will "tie the story up with the Architect."

I was actually hoping more for something introducing him and the mother, a prequel to Awakening if you will, when I heard the title the Darkspawn Chronicles instead of what sounds like one of the fan produced "what if" scenarios using existing areas and assetts.

Also, a patch would be nice.

I can't wait for this DLC. As quick and "hack n slash" as RtO was, I enjoyed it and thought it was worth the $. The idea of playing as the enemy in a "Flash-sideways" is very creative and opens up numerous possibilities for the future (books dlc episodes, comics ect). Not surprised by all the pessimism tho, haters will be haters, and most gamers who post on forums are never happy. I say, bring on the 18th!

Hmm,

After playing the 'Emissary' mod as a Darkspawn, I find that I don't really have any desire to play as a darkspawn.

However, new loot is always a tempting carrot.

I think I'm going to be on the fence with this one. I'll be out of town when it releases anyway, which gives me the perfect opportunity to just wait and see how it's received by everyone else before deciding whether to pull the trigger on it or not.

What I'd really like to see is another 'Stone Prisoner' style DLC that adds a companion and a small side-quest or two to the main campaign, or a new PC origin. (Non-noble human, anyone?!?!)

It is an interesting concept and I appreciate they're not just sticking to the same old ideas for every DLC project, but this is not anything I care to play. And it gives me no reason to start a new character or play through again. So I will most likely pass.

That's what I was trying to say. I was thinking it would be great if this DLC gave us some hints of The Architect and The Mother's existence, hinting that there was something fishy going on in Darkspawn ranks. Maybe your Darkspawn character is one of the candidates for being Disciples, or at the very least is not simply some mindless tool of destruction? Something like that.

But like I said, I won't keep my hopes up. I get the feeling this classifies under the "wreak as much chaos as possible" sort.

Agreed!  I think that it is very important to see or experience from "all" perspectives.  Especially when we see certain *ahem* changes in Awakening.  Am I a member of a minority who would like to know more about the Darkspawn and what truly drives and motivates them? I happen to like the fact that Bioware and its developers are making the Darkspawn a more complex species.  Still doesn't mean that I won't sink an arrow first and ask, "what's up" later, but it might give me considerable pause before doing so. Gotcha. When you said "tie up" I was thinking "wrap up", "complete", "tie up loose ends", etc. As opposed to "tie the base game and the expansion together."

From intro
You now fight as the Darkspawn! The city of Denerim, jewel of Ferelden, girds itself for war. As a hurlock vanguard, you alone hold the power to make thralls of your fellow darkspawn and drive them into the heat of battle. Heed the archdemon's call--Denerim must burn!

Does not sound like Architect is here.. or heard.   Yet a thinking Darkspawn..  rallying troops. hmmm...Image IPB

Guh, I'd ALWAYS take actual new CONTENT  (AND new item(s) as a bonus!) over item packs. It's difficult for me to see the other perspective as logical.

As for myself? I was mildly disappointed with Warden's Keep and Return to Ostagar because they felt like they cost $2 or $3 more than they should have for the amount of content they contained.

The trouble is, every time Bioware gives us something like Warden's Keep for $7 I think: "Well, that took 2 hours -- so like $3.50 per hour? I mean, that's better than a movie -- but Dragon Age itself was $60 for 100 hours of gameplay. $0.60 per hour... Why does DLC cost over 5 times more than that value?"

But this is an entirely seperate encounter from the main game. Maybe that gave them more freedom to make it a sizable event?
If they gave me 5+ hours of Darkspawn gameplay for $5, I'll be a happy fan and not a mildly disgruntled customer.

Sounds like you'll be one of the Darkspawn in that corpse pile where Sandal will be standing near, you go at him with a small army and get slaughtered.

That would be perfect!  You assemble a horde of darkspawn, wipe out Alistair and the gang and head to Fort Drakon to challenge the AD for control of the Blight.  And there's this silly little dwarf, just standing there...

Then Sandal unleashes a Storm of the Millenium on you and your horde and the game fades to black after some awesome pyrotechnics.  The real hero of Ferelden is revealed!
