One week ago, I post my mod in a thread where Bioware is "Looking for a Dragon Age mod".
Then, conveniently, today, Bioware shows up with this DLC. Bioware was looking for a mod, alright... a mod to steal!
I have to applaud them on throwing together their pastiche so quickly, though.

That's still a role, though. Perhaps a dull one, yes. Depends on how it plays out, really. (How do we know that the vanguard won't speak? The more powerful hurlocks are, according to the lore, known to be capable of speech, even prior to the unfoldings in Awakening.) But I see your point.
We also have to take into account that this isn't a game we're talking about, here, it's a $5 DLC. How much "role playing" did any of the other DLCs offer, really? Well, except Shale, but hers was a special case, because of all of the unused content already available for her. But the others are both hour long romps which do little to develop any of your characters in any significant way.
If you consider this roleplaying, every game is a roleplaying game as you always play a role. Even the worst shooter you do not play as yourself but play a role. To me, simply playing a role does not make a game an rpg. And i agree, the former dlc's did not add that much to the roleplaying character of Origins, but they didnt take anything away of it either. That new dlc seems to be a different story.
This is one of those "internet debates" that never goes anywhere.
But essentially the "video game definition of RPG" has nothing to do with "playing a role". It's a game genre defined by conventions and inspirations and mechanics and so on.
People love saying Zelda is an RPG! because they can then start an argument. Quite franly w/ 90% of RPGs I play, I don't feel at all like I'm "playing a role". MMOs I do, but single player games, rarely.
An RPG is one of those "you'll know it when you play it" for instance Bioshock, NOT an RPG, despite "rpg elements' God of War NOT an RPG depsite "RPG elements"
Borderlands .. hybrid RPG, despite it being 90% shooter.
Games like Mass Effect 2 ruin genres. Which can be great for sales, but hurts genre fans in the long run.
While I enjoy ME2 a lot, I wish it were more RPG. And with ME2 sales being so good, more and more RPGs will follow ME2 and drop tricky RPG gameplay in favor of "loadouts" "maps" and linear cover shooting mechanics
Part of that is a personal investment into the character, I mean irrespective of whether you are playing a role, is it part of the "Game". Halo has you playing a role, but none of the gameplay mechanics are concerned with you having any control/game elements over that role. So that's where you get those games that have "elements" such as God of War your control over your "role" is limited but there are elements. At any rate, the nature of tech has seen som many of the conventions we associated with RPGs being cut down on still if there are game elements tied into how you play your role it's fair to call it an RPG.
At any rate, yeah DLC, can we get some information as to whether preparation for this DLC will include a title update that fixes *any* of the problems some customers are having?

Think J.J. Abram's Star Trek
I'd rather not. Star Trek 90210 really should not have been called Star Trek. "FIRE EVERYTHING"
"But we don't have a captain!" ... "We. Do. Now!" cheesey Myspace face pose.
I think this will be a blast!! and give some food for thought for sure.. just look at the number of posts since it was announced.

Pretty sure, 1.03a will come out the same as Darkspawn Chronicles goes live. I'm looking forward to this update or not, hahaha!

That would be fairly disappointing, like how RtO was just a modification of the Ostagar map. (and a couple maps added on)
The notion of seeing the tragedy of these heroes ultimately failing in their goals and being overrun, from the perspective of the one doing the overrunning, has some promise, I think.. in a disturbing sort of way. Could be very unsettling if pulled off well. Doubt it'll be explored much though. Such a concept would need more of a full game than a DLC to be explored thoroughly, I think.

If you were going to be a darkspawn one of the talking darkspawns would have been better. But being surrounded by mindless beings? I get enough of that at work - lol

this has got to be the biggest collection of whiners on the net. if you don't like it, don't buy it. to come on and act like bioware dared to make something not to your liking is the epitome of self entitlement.
1. Ooo, this sounds neat. I'll probably get it.
2. I'll wait for reviews. I thought previous DLC was overpriced and/or not worth my time.
3. I'll skip this one. Playing as the bad guys doesn't interest me.
4. I'm not interested. Come out with more DLC that expands the main storyline!
All four of those opinions is helpful to Bioware in making future DLC. If people were perfectly quiet then Bioware would just be taking shots in the dark.

Agreed. But you missed one...
5. I'm somewhat interested but don't know if this DLC requires patch 1.03 or not.
Some of us have money tied up in Awakening and Feastday DLC that can't be played. There's nothing on the addons site to say Feastday needs patch 1.03. Hopefully, there will be a note on this one to say it does or there will be even more people giving money to EA for DLC they can't use.
