Well, I've said my piece.  That's my take on it.  I think you are reading way too much into harmless fun.

Fun that I have participated in, in the Alistair thread, I might add.

There is no need to exagerrate Costin. You are being too provocative in the past several weeks for some reason. Which seems very unnecessary.

Or perhaps I have spent too much time reading into ME 2 storyline threads, particularly Tali ones. "Shudders."

You're so gallant KoP, I'm going to become one of YOUR fan girls (despite your Logain thing).   But my obsessive desire for Alistair remains.

If by emotionally involved, you mean drolling at half naked pictures of Alistair, then by all means.

Hmm...that could be qualified as watching porn however...

I can quite understand that. Not in Alistair´s case, but I wouldn´t mind a half-naked Morrigan or Velanna or Liara at all...

I do know that it's mostly game mechanics but they dont' simply tell you that; they make an inability to lead even when he has a plan part of his personality and one of the reasons he doesn't want to be King. It's just a little extreme.

I believe it's something that's considered maintaining the 4th wall. In order not too break immersion they make the game character pass command in your hands out of in-game justification rather than tell you plain in the popup, "Hey, you're the guy with the mouse, try to ignore now it makes zero sense you're in command and just start to well, command".

Incidentally, the original draft for Alistair had him older, more experienced and decisive. This was changed precisely because it made zero sense for such Alistair to let brand new recruit run the show rather than tell you "hey new guy, this is how high you'll be jumping from now on".

Making decisions isn't responsibility. Making decisions and taking responsibility for them is responsibility. Isn't Loghain's inability to take responsibility for his decision to fight rather than wait for reinforcements, Cailan was open to waiting reinforcements if necessarry but not open for fighting from backlines, and coming up with some silly "Wardens did it, inside job!!!11!!oneone" crap central to the game's plot?

It was ultimately Cailan's decision. The fact that they went ahead meant that Cailan didn't really want to wait for reinforcements, he just wanted to shut Loghain up when he wanted reinforcements by saying that he'd be happy to wait...for the Orlesians.

I would pay gold to see Cailan's expression had Loghain chosen to agree to that.

Who knows? He might have called off the battle to check on Loghain's mental health.

"Then by all means, Cailan. Let us retreat and wait for the Orlesians." said Loghain with certainty.

To say that Cailan was thrown off his guard would have been an understatement. The king simply stared with his mouth wide open for several seconds until he composed himself.

"Yes...yes." said Cailan slowly "We will retreat to Lothering and muster our forces there. Sound the order."

"As you wish." replied Loghain with curt nod, and left to give his orders. Soon enough soldiers scrambled as they hastily removed their camp for the retreat, before the Darkspawn closed in. Picket lines were organized to slow the horde as much as they could, but many of them would die.

As Duran left the war council he could faintly hear Cailan's voice in the wind. "Make sure we have our healers ready. I believe my father in law has gone mad." Turning his head he saw the King speaking with one of the mages. Uldred if he remember correctly.

He suppressed a snicker. The fool of a boy had fallen for Loghain's ploy.

Heh. Even with his Loghain thing, KoP is awesome. I've developed an unholy fondness the sour old Hero of River Dane, so that's no longer an impediment to having an aura of awesome.

I think it would have been wise to wait for the Orlesians but not to retreat.

Instead, they should have fortified their position, force the darkspawn to a long siege and give Eamon and the Orlesians a chance to attack the darkspawn from behind.

Fortify what exactly beyond what they already had? If they retreated in the Ruin itself to hold out then the darkspawn would attack from three sides. The tunnels, and the two side roads.

Holding Ostagar is impossible. Had we been talking of a modern castle, then yes.

I think it's quite likely Loghain WAS right about the chevaliers.

That's why the Grey Warden treaties were necessary.

That is false. Orlais could have easily attack after Ferelden weakened by civil war and blight after the blight, but they didn't. Celene I and Orlesians in general know and remember that Ferelden is not worth the effort for minimal gain. Troops tied by last occupation probably cost war against Nevarra where Orlais lost territory that was actually worth something.

Just finished the Loghain as a Warden with Alistair and Anora marrying. In response to my original post, I'm glad I did not do a complete re-play through. Loghain is easy to get to know, only has a few dialogues, and my interpretation was he was just a guy with a lot of responsibility and hard learned life lessons that led him down a dark path. Keeping in mind that he made all his decisions in the interest of maintaining Fereldan's stability, I found his toon to be pretty likeable.

In the end he just wanted to redeem himself just like Sten, Zevran, Leliana, and Oghren. Even Morrigan is a good person who just feels her responsibility to the world to bring in an untainted Old God is to great to remain bythe Warden's side. We'll see how that works out for her.

Anyway - I liked this ending best so far. Alistair and Anora do well together. Loghain is still around to offer his military experience having learned from his mistakes, and the Cousland Grey Warden sticks around to add his wisdom to the mix. Fereldan seemed pretty OK.

Right...cause it's SOO easy to take a kingdom, weakened as it is.

Especially when it's full army is mustered and has already defeated a Blight. The main route into Fereldan is by Castle Redcliff, which can be held quite easily. Oh maybe she could have won,( I doubt it ), but it would have been at a very great cost. Especially since the Fereldans would have thought the Orlesians to their very end.

By all means believe in that weak logic of yours. I will just stick to following examples laid by history.

Jerusalem. 1.000 Peasants, a couple of dozen men at arms and a couple of Knights hold the city against almost 20.000 men, to the point where Saladin would have to sacrifice a great part of his army to take it.

Constantinople: Almost 100.000 Turks attack the city guarded by a mere 7.000 Men. The turks lost a very great deal of men, almost to the point that there was a high risk for Mehmed to have his army abandon him if he could not take the city.

Celene is far clever then that, she tried to convince Cailan to marry her, when that failed she tried sending four legions into Fereldan to help against the Blight. Not that those legions would have left mind after the Blight was defeated mind you.
