Well, doesn't this illustrate the problems of DLC quite nicely?
After thinking about it for a while, I quite like the idea. It's a twist on the story, I get more DA:O, and I get an item for Awakenings. And, for me, the cost is covered by my residual Bioware points. It's something of a no-brainer for me.
Which, clearly, doesn't match the impressions of the majority on this board.
One thing to consider though... for all of those calling for a Leliana / Zevran / Morrigan / whoever DLC ... well, some people are going to be disappointed by whatever choice BW makes. I for one wouldn't buy a Leliana DLC, she bored the hell out of me and I thought she was bland, to say the least. However, I'd buy a Morrigan DLC without hesitation.
It's worth bearing in mind that whatever they release concerning our companions isn't going to be to everyone's taste. With the example above, if they're going to release Leliana DLC before they do anything about Morrigan I'd be disappointed. The Leliana fans would be ecstatic. But whatever, it's horses for courses.
At the end of the day, you can't please all of the people all of the time.
As for the patch, I haven't had any issues. I'm playing on a Mac using Bootcamp to run Windows Vista. I agree, the patch should be produced, but, frankly, to see every thread on DLC or upcoming products hammered by people calling for a patch is frustrating. Many people have had no problems with DA. It's worth bearing that in mind.
And before I get slandered for the previous paragraph... I'm a Mac gamer. You have any idea how long I had to wait for previous BW games?
As for the complaints about "slaughtering our companions" ... well ... we're talking about an RPG here. As an old school table-top gamer who DM'd and played in equal measure, some of my favorite moments came as a DM running NPCs against the party. It's occasionally nice to see the PC crew get its ass kicked.
Essentially, my comment to those saying that this doesn't fit because we've established some sort of history in Thedas is this: That statement flies in the face of good, well thought through RPGs. Nothing should be off limits. Most of us have played multiple playthroughs, so we're aware, and receptive to, the fact that the story can change for our PC. This DLC is just an example of that.
Let the flaming commence.
