Maybe. That is really depressing, though. I think it's mostly because he loves Orzammar and being a merchant is really boring. I mean, I wouldn't mind if the wife died because it's a Blight and people do die but if the kid died, too...we don't even know if it was born yet. I really wouldn't be okay with that.Thrubeingcool13 wrote...
I think he's so willing to return to Orzammar because his wife died in the siege of Denerim. So, all you female DNs still have a shot with him.

That's because he's meant to be a warrior, naturally. And he doesn't die, he just gets attacked by...something, I don't remember what. Bandits, maybe? He claims his leg didn't heal properly and that's why he can't go out adventuring with you. I notice they didn't take the huge and valuable-looking shield of Aeducan, though, so I'm kind of disinclined to believe him.Cypher0020 wrote...
ok I read that Gorim can die before reaching Denerim?? How??!

I forgot that his wife was expecting and/or gave birth. Aww. That would be a needlessly depressing situation if his unborn/newborn child died.
I'd like to think that his child would make it back to Orzammar with him as a possible heir to Gorim's house.

You only get that line as a DNM. As a DNF he talks about how Harrowmont is hoping one of the nobles will win the Proving to impress you. And he might say that but he's very good when you actually get into combat situations.BigBad wrote...
Gorim is established from the beginning as a second-rate warrior whose high position is due to his family's honor and his own loyalty (so much so that Trian admires him for it!!). If you talk about the provings, he outright states that he sucks at single combat. I mean, Gorim is awesome and everything, but he's not much of fighter. Even if he's just making up an excuse to prevent you from whisking him off away from his family towards his almost certain death, you can't really hold it against him. He honestly doesn't think he'd be much of a help and doesn't want to be a liability due to the importance of your quest.

Gorim is actually pretty good in a fight in the origin as long as you unequip his shield and re-equip it. For some odd reason, his sword is a much higher tier than he has the stats for, so sometimes you don't get a proper attack score with him. But as far as in-character interactions go, I always got the feeling that he wasn't considered a particularly good fighter by Dwarven standards.
I could be wrong, of course. Just my interpretation.

Also... how did Gorim get the sheild? I understand if Harrowmont or Endrin gave it to him.... but weren't they expecting the DN to die in the DR?

All nobles have seconds. Dulin is Harrowmont's, Vartag is Bhelen's, the DN usually served as Endrin's when he went into battle but Bhelen took his place during the events of the origin. Gorim is the DN's second, period. If not, do you really think a warrior would be allowed to follow the princess around everywhere? How scandalous.Cypher0020 wrote...
is Gorim the DNF's second? Or does that only apply to males?

Endrin gave Gorim the shield before he left for the Surface (and since, according to Gorim, Endrin had time to waste away from grief it must have been a few week later and who even knows why Gorim took so long to just leave and still managed to get married and be expecting a child when you find him...) along with a note which you can read in the codex. In the other origins, Gorim may or may not have shield and note but obviously you never hear of it. In this origin, though, they have the extra bit of hope that you might have found Duncan on his way out. Also, Endrin apparently doesn't think anyone else in his House deserves the shield since he - in his mind - wrongly cast you out and allowed Bhelen to profit from fratricide and attempted sororicide.
And regarding Gorim's fighting...it might just be that's he's not good with Provings due to lack of training.
According to the toolset (which Gilsa helpfully located for me awhile back)...
Gorim: "*Ahem* No. My father thought it was a waste to study duel-style combat, as I was pledged to be your second." (VO: Speaker may seem a little embarrassed that he was never trained to duel because he was meant for another position.)

My reacton:
"We both knew it would not truly last."
Well maybe it would have on the freaking surface had you not gotten married five minutes after arriving in Denerim!

Oh, I'm well aware of that and it really was the practical thing for him to do. Just the same, that doesn't mean I have to be happy about it.BigBad wrote...
A dwarven noble should know better than to expect to marry for love, or expect others to do the same when survival is at stake. Gorim did the prudent thing when exiled into an unfamiliar world and forced into a role he was entirely unsuited for by both training and inclination.
