I have a dilemma. I was wondering what armour is best suited for the vanguard. Thing is I love the look of the blood dragon armor but is 15% bonus power really all that for the class? I'm in conflict between:
blood dragon: 15% bonus power + 10% health
and this setup: archon helm (+5% cd reduction)
shield harness(+5% shields)
amp plates (+5% power damage)
heavy damp gloves (+5% shields)
n7 greaves (+3% shields)
There is a thread here where Sabrsandiego wrote that the +15 bonus power alone makes blood dragon the best since it contributes to incin ammo. Can anyone insanity vanguards confirm the validity of one or the other armor setups?

Go all the way for shields except on the shoulder pads. Use the ones that provide you with 25% bonus melee damage and you're all set.

Are you sure about the shields? When I switched between +shield and other armour pieces it did nothing, presumably because Vanguards have barriers instead of shields.

It has something to do with charge renewing only the base value of your shields minus the eventual shield bonuses you may have. Sabre and some other guy had an exhausting discussion about health vs. shield stacking.
My question is am I gimping my vanguard with blood dragon?
p.s, I just got the terminus armor from the seal dude. would that be vanguard viable?

Doesn't matter what you have, as long as you have melee shoulder pads. I'd pick weapon damage and health bonuses on top of that. (Or since you have the archon helm that's good too).

What he said. Sabre also did a big comparison a while ago (too lazy to search for that thread) and he (as well as others) concluded that on Insanity health and shields do not really equate to anything. You won't even take an extra shot with as much extra shield as you can get. The one second "immunity" when your shield goes down plus Charge/medi-gel is more than enough to keep you alive.
The general consensus has been to take the melee shoulders and whatever looks cool. Personally, I take the melee shoulders, storm speed, shield recharge chest piece and the rest goes to weapon/headshot damage. Even the extra weapon damage doesn't seem to make much of a difference to me. Most enemies are toast with one shot/melee combo anyway. The shield recharge and storm speed definitely help, cause even though our cooldowns are short, there are still times when they are waaaay too long

Not strictly true though. Having in mind YMIR outdamages 4 blue suns with its machine gun, extra health is especially good in conjunction with Reave. I've personally survived 3 blue suns shooting at me with N7 +% health and Reave's health regeneration. That's on Insanity.I agree against YMIR extra health or shields make no sense, but against collectors/mercs/geth they're pretty valuable.

Weapon Damage and Melee Shoulders are a must, try the Archon Visor.

the setup i found effective for my insanity vanguard run was:
+10% Head-shot Damage Visor (i took the Viper over the Claymore)
+25% Melee Damage Shoulders
+5% Shields Chest
+5% Shields Arms
+10% Storm-speed Legs
you'll have to forgive my not remembering the exact names of the pieces but it's the stats that are important anyway.
the dr.pepper helms/visors could work well too (+5% power dmg, +5% weapon dmg, or +5% shields)

I prefer these items for Vanguard.
Vangaurd
Helmet: Death Mask/N7 Helmet.
Chest: Aegis Vest.
Shoulders: Strengh Boost Pads/Asymetric Def Layer/Amplifier Plates.
Arms: Stabilizing Guantlets.
Legs: Life Support Webbing/Stimulator Conduits.
For the Vanguard, Health is much more important than Shields, you are going to be charging into packs of enemies so your Shields will die quickly.
The Death Mask is purly for looks, so the N7 Helmet is technicly better.
I don't have any of the downloadable armor except Cerberus and Inferno, so don't judge me harshly on any "Better" pieces.

I'm using this setup on my (Claymore) Vanguard and it works perfectly.
archon visor (+5% cd reduction)
shield harness (+5% shields)
strenght shoulder pads (+25% melee damage)
heavy damp gloves (+5% shields)
n7 greaves (+3% shields)
I was using the sentry interface (+5% shields) before the archon visor came out. That also worked well for me.
