Anyhoo I've seen a few posts asking to play as darkspawn so maybe bioware read the forums and have these others on the cards too.

The companion DLCs are tough. Who do you do? Whoever you choose, people are going to be annoyed. However, Alistair, Zevran, Morrigan and Leliana would (I guess) be the most popular. I'd Morrigan's and possibly Alistair's, but would have no interest in Zevran's and Leliana's.
I'm not 100% sold on the Darkspawn idea, but it's interesting.

AFAICT though, those requests were to have a joinable sentient darkspawn join your Warden party after "side flipping," not ... play the "other side".
BTW, I was hoping that was what the Darkspawn Chronicles was going to be (possibly)....
I would have accepted anything that added to the story of either Origins or Awakening, either to do more in Origins or maybe get to know the companions of Awakening better. Or possibly an area you could reach from either campaign, a la the ziggurat dungeon in Throne of Bhaal.

I get what people are saying about companion DLC, if what they mean is extending the romance within Ferelden. I hope we get new areas of Thedas so hope to be able to take existing companions on journeys to Orlais, Antiva & Par Vollen. It makes sense that the companions who come from those places would be pivotal, whether you romanced them or not.

A single story told in several pieces of dlc, each 3-4 hours and each ending with a small cliffhanger. Those entail characters/story elements leading up to a full expansion or sequel.
Excellent idea and I do believe that what Chronicles means

I'm starting to wonder if that verb should become "was" in the new EAra.
Hm, no, the retail releases all live up to this reputation, however the DLC is lacking. Then again, if you look what Bethesda did with Oblivion before Knights of the Nine/Shivering Isles, they also released very lackluster DLC for a long time before they got on the right track. Maybe there's still hope left

If not, I'm afraid round 2 will be us playing the darkspawn attacking Vigil's Keep and sacking Amaranthine.
The good news? At least so far I can't see how there could be a round 3.

Anything but darkspawn. i was hoping it would be the Leliana DLC. But as long as it was something to do with the companions (or indeed DAO or Awakenings) would of been fine.

I agree, Darkspawn Dlc for me is a bumper because I just want to be the good guy (!) lol. But on the ther hand I hope Bioware will release a new patch soon with this new Dlc because I haven't bought Awakening yet due to the amount of crashes PC players are experiencing with Windows 7 64bits
A companion Dlc would be cool, maybe with the story of the Grey Warden travelling to Orlais or Antiva to help Leiliana and Zev out

If this DLC was about, say, you being among the very first group of darkspawn after the magess ill-fated actions. And if it actually involved dialogue and meaningful insight into that period (Did the mages themselves become the first darkspawn?), they would be game for a DLC like that.
But according to how this DLC was described by the Bioware dev, it's meant to be a hack and slash break from roleplaying with your dog.
You're basically re-treading the exact same environments, to fight the exact same battle you already went through, but this time, you're fighting for the other army. This hardly qualifies as innovative in my book, but this might be enough for some people.
DLC in the true Biowareann style would have added more info to the world in some way whether through companion story continuations, or giving you a chance to play through historical scenarios that you only read about in the codex entries. But this new release, as it was described by the dev, makes it look like the DLC plan is to release whatever for a quick $buck.
People weren't simply saying that the DLC sucked. They were seeing it as a missed opportunity and not in line with what they have come to expect from Bioware's (purportedly) story-driven proclivities.

Something related to being able to play as a younger Duncan would be nice, or perhaps an expansion that has to do with the first blight and how the Gray Wardens were first founded, or being able to play through the war with the Orlesians.

This would be in keeping with the storyline alluded to by the Awakenings ending and include some companions. Yes, there will be some players who did not keep Zevran and some players who did not recruit Leliana, but there will be an even smaller minority who did not recruit either.
