My soldier play is rotten - what am I doing wrong??

Discuss how you handled the "close the shutters" fight. (Archangel Recruitment) I had Miranda
as team mate. the worst part being that d*** vorcha with the flamethrower
that hides around the corner. I finally got lucky and got him, but I had to redo a couple dozen times.
also discuss the soldier Horizon fight if you'd like...
I've read all the threads on soldier builds, and everybody gives the "final" build they are going for...
I am only a few hours in - so I only have a handful of points and my soldier is getting his head handed to him in every fight! I have tried soldier several times and gave up at the Horizon fight every time..not there yet, and I want a complete soldier run--
(Note: I have played as Infiltrator, Sentinal, and Adept - with good results.)
My current build and stats are:
Veteran Difficulty
Imported ME1 soldier
lvl 10
adrenaline Rush x x
concussive shot x x
disruptor ammo x x
incendiary ammo x x
cryo ammo -----
Combat Mastery x x x
Warp ammo x x
all points used.
completed recruitment for Zaed, Garrus, Mordin, Kasumi, Zaid Loyalty, plus Miranda and Jacob.
Thanks for reading.

If you have problems with the shutter take all squadmates and dont leave one for garrus.Let them play cannon fodder for you at the specific corner.(direct them to this place/let them take the damage, then you come and finish the flamethrower off)
For horizon it would be good to get squad warp ammo.

The reason being that Adrenaline Rush is the advantage of the Soldier class: time dilation to aim, as well as +100-140% damage bonus per bullet while time is slowed.

I guess I don't understand AR - or at least the best use for it...
Seems I should focus on maxing AR at this stage, and if there is enough points available before Horizon -- try to max warp ammo.

Also, pick the revenant-As said, AR use is key. Locust is good, but Vindicator and definetly the revenant are better.

Heh, I hate that guy. My infriltrator has no trouble cloaking then sniping his canister, but on all my others, specially engieer, it was carnage.Tahlec wrote...
That flame-thrower corner can be a bit tricky. On my current playthrough (Soldier - Insanity), I hit AR, jumped over the barricade, put a well-aimed shot into his fuel tank, and then jumped back over the barricade. Three seconds later, BOOM.
Soldier is pretty easy though-just adrenaline rush, keep moving and firing and he can't do much.

AR levels 1-3, and the Hardened AR, give you +100% damage boost and a 50% time dilation to help you aim. Heightened AR gives you 140% damage boost and 70% time dilation. All levels last 5 seconds. As I understand it, you take less damage, even if you're not using Hardened AR; someone may correct me.
Because of the time dilation, 5 seconds in AR is much less in real time; therefore, hardened AR is suitable for continuous fire, while heightened AR is best for sniping and killing with shotguns at close range.
There are many ways you can use AR; the most important of them is to increase headshot precision and damage output. Secondarily, you can use it to keep you from losing as much health when sprinting from cover to cover. Another use is to increase your accuracy while you're running and firing from the hip (or while walking and aiming).
I like to combine my AR usage with cryo ammo in the following way. I put on AR, then take out defenses of 3+ enemies within the duration by using Vindicator. Then I switch to Predator and freeze any unprotected enemeis during the next AR. That allows me to deal with them or other enemies without taking as much fire.

As for Adrenaline Rush, it's got various uses. cruc1al has mentioned most, if not all, of them. My personal use was power output; I used weapons like the Vindicator and the Widow, and used Adrenaline Rush to line up headshots. I never took a shot without Adrenaline Rush being active. The reason for this is simple: all my chosen weapons were powerful, but fired slowly and had less ammo. For me, a miss was far worse than for most other characters. Adrenaline Rush gave me time to line up the shot (provided I pre-aimed), dealing maximum damage with each bullet.
As for your Ammo Powers, wait on them. A single point in them will suffice for the beginning portion of the game. Once you've gotten Combat Mastery and Adrenaline Rush maxed, then start in on your ammo powers.

-Use Incendiary Ammo against Armor and let your squadmates take down Barriers
or
-Use Warp Ammo against both Armor and Barriers.
Concussive Shot is a waste of points and of cooldown you need for AR in my opinion. Guess you can't change that now. But with really intense use of AR you should come trough. Use it whenever possible and stay in cover while you don't use it.

I'll second that. Concussive shot isn't powerful enough to warrant the 6s cooldown. A better strategy is to have one point in cryo, and use your heavy pistol to freeze a couple of enemies with adrenaline rush when you need the CC.

You can actually do both of them from the doorway, without going in and triggering the crusts. I mean husks. The one you've mentioned is probably the one you can see behind the pillar if you move all the way over to the right. You see its fat butt sticking out. Well, next time, try going all the way over to the left of the doorway. If you look closely, you'll see the second one's "arm" sticking out, wrapped in bandages. Plink away at that, and the husks don't spawn, fight's over. The good news is every class can do this now, what with the excellent locust included with the Kasumi DLC. I did it last night with the locust and pulled it off. Thanks to abenhorsen for posting a video on youtube on how to do this.swk3000 wrote...
Quick blurb: On Horizon, you can make the fight a lot easier by taking out one of the Scions before descending the stairs in the Spaceport. A full clip of Sniper Rifle ammo will allow you to do that. It's cheap, but one Scion and a lot of Husks is a lot easier than 2 Scions and a lot of Husks.

As for that Blood Pack Pyro in Archangel's Recruitment Mission, I have a simple solution: the Grenade Launcher. I hop over that last cover and pop a couple of grenades at the obstruction that the Pyro is standing behind. The Splash effect knocks him over, and I swing out of cover, move up, and spam grenades at him until he's dead. Not an elegant solution, but far easier to make work than popping AR and trying to line up a shot without pre-aiming.
Erm are you guys talking about the flame-thrower unit around the corner when your closing the left side shutter?
Because if thats the one then i also have a simple solution to kill him which can be done with any weapon.

This works. Also make the trip downstairs with the scientist and use his incineration blast, arc it around the corner once you get the targetting brackets up.Tahlec wrote...

Yes, you can actually do both from the doorway. However, I don't like doing so, as I consider stopping the Husk Spawning to be a glitch. Taking out a Scion to make things easier is tactics, but taking out both to stop the Husk spawn is glitching, and I prefer to stay away from glitches.
Besides, it's not like the Husks themselves present any real problems. The Scion is the big issue.

Anyways as shown in the screenshot you just jump the barricade then take cover on the coner & wait for him to stop spewing flames then pop out & shoot him in the face simple:lol:

Really? I never noticed that... just charged in and started shooting...

Thanks again, lots of great information...
as for the concussive shot - not really a fan of it but it saved me from charging Krogan that I'd managed to beat down to health, but was too close by then to grab the shotgun before I got stomped. (I have it on left bumper), not sure what I would substitute for that - AR? and run?

Isn't that still sort of cheating but just to a lesser degree=]

I always got flamed to death while trying to get into that particular piece of cover, and assumed it was pointless.

It's a little closer to glitching than I'd like to get, but it's either that or die from constant Scion shockwaves.
