Perhaps it could be a toggle in some menu thing, but instead of the helmet just magically poofing when its not on it could just sort of... I dunno. Hang off of the belt or something? I know it would look kind of bulky or whatever but it would at least make sense.

Not a bad idea at all, would mean that I could finally put on helmets other than a visor and get bonuses other than headshot damage without shep having what is often a stupidly big helmet on his head while he's trying to have a polite conversation. I wouldn't really notice it while shooting bad guys I wouldn't think, but it's annoying in conversations. It's REALLY put me off using helmets, I never wear anything other than the visor.

Great idea. The toggle on/off option in ME 1 was boring, in ME2 it was resolved but you can do this only in the captain' s room.
This will may solve all these problems.

I am fine with collapsible visors; even if it's just turning off the digital HUD.

Y'know, that makes sense, it really does. I've always thought that collapsable helmets seemed a bit unpractical.

If it were made out of cheeze -  perhaps a folding helmet would be a bad idea, but in the realms of sci-fi games, helmets and armour are usually  made from lightweight composite materials that are a gergillion times stronger than steel.   Therefore, even though that yes a folding helmet is inherently weaker than a solid single piece one, it's still going to be a formidable piece of armour.

Not to mention that all the people moaning about how it wouldn't be as good as a full helmet, don't seem to be taking the fact that the team mates just wear oxygen masks into account.  A colapsable helmet has got to be a million times better than a PVC mask that only covers the mouth and nose.  Image IPB

If the guns can collapse, why not the visors and helmets?

Makes perfects sense!

This is the greatest of all threads on BSN. I can't believe I haven't stumbled on to it before.

Isaac would've died when he was attacked by the EarthGov gunship in DS2 if his helmet wasn't collapsable. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever for Isaac to have a helmet that he has to hold considering the enemies he's up against.

Sam's helmet in Vanquish isn't collapsable. Only parts of it retract. ARS is a full body suit, including the helmet.

www.youtube.com/watch ARS isn't impratical at all. Infact, he's wrong about that helmet alltogether.

www.youtube.com/watch Why is this helmet a problem for Yahtzee? I think the video speaks for itself for how useful that suitcase is. Look at me I'm tony stark carrying around a helmet because it would be dumb to have it in a concealed suitcase for easy use.

Does Yahtzee even think before he posts?

I have to disagree, making all the helmets collapsible just sounds rather dumb to me. I did not like it in Dead Space, and I'm not going to like it here. I personally like wearing a visible helmet that does not collapse or disappear. If anything, they should keep it how it is, or perhaps add a third option allowing the helmets to be collapsible. Just that one simple change of forcing us to wear no helmets, or have collapsible ones would ruin the game for me.

NO!

Collapsable helmets pose three problems in the ME universe:

1. They are technologically complex and probably expensive. A good old fashion helmet, which can be taken on and off at will would be better. They are cheaper to make, and can store more data (being thicker). On top of that, collapsable helmets would have to limit EVERY Shepard character model to either wearing heavy armor, or at least some sort of armored collar on their neck and back where the pieces of the mask would be stored. I think I speak for all of us when I say that one of the things we want in ME3 is more diverse field costumes for Shepard, right? Not just N7 heavy armor (like in ME2), but leather commando uniforms (for adepts), combat vests (for engineers), light armor and possibly combat hoods like Kasumi (for infiltrators), etc, etc?

2. Collapsable helmets could likely be faulty, especially in the field of battle. I mean, you're talking about a technology that revolves around tiny gears, switches, and niches all working together. Wouldn't it be more practical for someone to just take off their helmet during a cutscene? Can't Shepard just tuck his/her helm under his/her arm? It would give Shepard something to do in a cutscene.
3. Collapsable helmets would have to be fairly slim, offering little to no protection within the vaccume, let alone when taking hits. Look at the Death Mask; that thing offers heavy protection, tactical assessment, and just looks cool!

I guess I'm not opposed to all collapsable helmets in ME3. But don't force it upon us! The Recon hood, for instance, could be great for collapsable technology. But for most other helmets...? I think not.

It's a nice idea, and would solve the dialogue/cut-scene dislike to wearing helmets but I can also see the argument against them. For one, what if Shepard were chatting away to a squad mate on some remote planet and they're suddenly attacked? A cheap head shot would be the end of Mass Effect. >.>

That said, I played the entirety of Mass Effect 2 without a helmet so *coughs* I'm glad my enemies never figured out where to aim their shots.

Personally Im fine with a helmet on/off toggle.

If Bioware wants to go a route such as this that would be very cool to look at. However it would have to completely disappear. Not just shrink to a small box which is still viable to the side of their face, which the OP pictures seem to indicate. The reason why people (like me) dont use helmets/visors is because it obscures part of the face.

Yes, if you're going to go to all that trouble of customising Shepard's face to how you like it, you want to at least be able to see all of it. ^_^

I haven't seen this mentioned in any of the ME3 GameInformer stuff... so I'm leaning toward the odds of getting this is low. However, I still support it.

can anybody post a video-response on youtube with the question regarding collapsable hlemets in ME3? That would get some attention to the devs
