The Lost in Space remake (1998) had a great example of this. The spiders attack major West and his helmet rises up from his armor and around his head.

Precisely, though I feel the helmets rising from the armor might be a little problematic considering its a fully modular suit with multiple interchangable parts, whereas West's armor was basically one piece.  Just helmets collapsing might be an easier fix, though like cruc1al said it could get bulky looking.

Just like how the game automatically makes Shepard & co unholster weapons when near danger and fold out, the same could be applied to the helmets - and then retract at a cutscene or when the danger is over/the player holsters weapons. That would look so completely bad ass. I think I need a lie down just thinking about it.

There's no way they'll do this for ME2. Maybe 3...maybe.

Haha, that's awesome!  I support this banner.

...as soon as I figure out how to put it in my sig.  Sorry, I'm kind of a forum noob.

To infinity and beyond.

Everyone has already covered the places collapsible helmets are already seen. Stargate (the film rather than the bulky SG-1) Goauld suits are a great example of this. Although I think it would be better if the helmet was actually built into the suit. One of the reasons I don't opt for the visors or other tecchy hats is because they don't really posess much cinematic quality to them when they cover half the face and look like massive cyborg implants. The suits of armour aren't that modular; the options provided look more like additions than replacements so having a collapsible helmet built into the back shouldn't suffer much change among the different variants.
