Maybe if they took time on developing ME3 they could utilize it.

Of course, ideally, that's what everyone wants. But as Bioware has stated, they want ME3 out in less time than was between 1 and 2. And on the list of things they want to get into the game, collapsible helmets would probably be near the bottom.
Okay, I'm a horrible pessimist. I'll shut up now.

As long as wearing a helmet is still optional I'm with it.

Signed! Amazing meet between helmet lovers and helmet haters. When I read it, I immediately thought of Lost in Space, then I saw it in your sig. OP, you win my friend!

Looks great buddy!

A lot people are under the impression that I'm offering this idea up as a bastion for helmet toggling in Mass Effect 2. This is not the case, enjoy ME2 for the game that is...not the game you want it to be. Remember Mass Effect 3 is just around the corner, start voicing your ideas for the final installment, not the most recent one.

Most of this community is smart enough to realize this... Most, not all. rofl

People, please stop saying that you "signed" this before Stanley Woo starts to consider this a petition and locks it down.

Agreed, I didn't think about that.

The best way to show your support is to put the banner in your sig.

No. The concept is just silly looking and out of place in the universe.

*Looks at all the "Transformers" style guns already in Mass Effect.*

Really? Cocaine is a hell of a drug, huh?

The guns are borderline but still within the realm of possibility.  Many modern weapons are already "collapsible" to a certain degree.  The thing that can't be collapsed in a modern weapon is the barrel, but there is no indication that the barrel has to be a solid piece of steel in a mass accelerator.  You aren't using expanding gas and given the speed of the projectile there probably isn't even much direct contact with the barrel.  All of the weapons in ME1 and 2 look at least plausible.  But the helmet concepts I've seen in this thread don't.  Really it all boils down to aesthetics.  I think the concepts displayed in this thread are ugly an out of character.

This is an awesome idea. I would love to see this in ME3.
The only potential problem I could see with this is the hair. With a helmet like the recon hood that is very tight on the head, the longer hair styles would clip through the helmet. This doesn't happen with the current game because it would seem there is no hair rendered with the helmets on. They'd have a few options to get around this.

1. Make every hair style very short. Easiest option, but kills character customization.
2. Somehow have the hair disappear as the helmet forms around the head. I'm assuming this would be a very complicated animation process and just not worth Bioware's time.
3. Make every helmet big enough to completely cover all hair styles. This would limit them as to the variety of helmet styles they could create.

Unless someone has a better idea as to how they could accomplish this, I fear that it just won't happen.

I think this is pretty much why we won't see those kind of helmets in any game that supports character customization anytime soon. As much as I like the idea...

Good point, that certainly is a problem...the only solution I could come up with would be to have a placeholder hairstyle that automatically appears on the character when wearing a helmet that covers the entire head.  For example, and long haired FemShep would automatically be given a hairstyle with the hair pulled back to prevent obstruction with the helmet...much like long haired indiviuals do in real life when wearing a helmet.

That or Shepard wears a do-rag...which could be kind of bad-ass in its own right.

would be really cool if Shepard would "collapse" his helmet before having a drink or having an important talk with someone..

Keep this thread up front!!

What do developers do now that they have no project to do? Play in the game room? Anyway, It should be simple: Take the original files, break it up, animate it, then program it! I would like to know what they are doing though.

Well, they are currently working on Mass Effect 3, it's pretty much been developing since ME2 released.  But yes...we all would like to know what they are up to :bandit:

Excellent idea! I am very upset about the helmet decision in ME2, and this would fix it nicely. If Bioware actually listens to us on this, it would go a long way to change my opinion of BioWare as a completely arrongant company, that actually takes pride and joy in being arrogant and dismissing their fans.

I kind of want Casey Hudson to see this surrounded by several of his subordinates, then he looks at them and says "Why didn't you guys think of that?"  Then he walks off while while one guy shifts the blame onto one person by saying "Yeah Mike, why didn't you?"  Then someone else slaps Mike on the back of the head as they all disperse, leaving Mike alone and vulnerable.

I'd laugh...that Mike guy's an ***hole anyway.

Maybe I'm just being cynical, but I've seen certain ME2 Devs make less than encouraging comments in suggestion topics in the past.
Seems like all they ever do is make excuses for why things weren't done, but never actually say anything encouraging like "Cool idea! We'll definitely look into that!" or even a tame little "Interesting, we never thought of that..." So I'm beginning to lose faith in the fact that they're even listening.

All it would take to sway my opinion is for them to actually use one of the commonly requested things in my DLC Armor topic like Merc Armor or a bundle of N7 Parts, but I'm beginning to doubt that they've ever even so much as skimmed through it.
