Its been far too long since I played Dragon Age Origins. I played Awakening and beaten it twice however I found it boring cause of the little dialog with your companions and it was too easy. I played Warrior((Templar/Berserker)) , Rouge ((Assassian/Duelist)) , and Mage ((Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage)) all with melee weapons. So I want to try something new using archery. However since I have no experince what so ever with archey I was wondering if you guys could help me. So what is a better Archer a Warrior or Rouge? Also what is race is better for an Archer aHuman or Dalish Elf or City Elf. Another thing what skills should I get and what gear?.Finally as a console gamer what skills would I have on my hotkey/thingy.

The best race would be Dwarf for Magic Resistance but according to lore, Dalish Elf has to be the most "sensible" choice.

Bear in mind that some talents are useless with a ranged attack and that you can't backstab with a bow.

The Warrior will have more health, stamina and damage per level. It will also regain stamina thanks to Death Blow. It will be able to equip heavier armours (Master Archer negates the penalty for heavy armours except massive chest armours) whereas the Rogue will have Stealth (great for critical hits and stuff), Evasion (not bad), specializations (Assassin and Duelist) that give +4 dexterity, +2.5 percent critical chance and +1 damage per hit which may balance a bit the damage difference per level.

I love Rogues but I'd probably choose the Warrior Archer (if only for Awakening, not using backstabs with Awakening abilities is kinda sad really). It really depends on your playing style and the party members you're taking with you.

Archery / Bard Build

Recommended Race:
Human: Rolling a Human Is the best choice since you don't need to waste your attributes on strength.

Attributes:

Keep in mind that during the Circle Tower arch, you will receive attribute boosts, they are

Strength         +4
Dexterity         +4
Willpower      +4
Cunning         +5
Constitution   +1
Magic              +2

With this in mind your final attributes should look like this

At level 1

Strength.....16
Dexterity....15
Willpower....12
Magic........11
Cunning.....14
Constitution.10

At level 25 with circle tower boosts.

Strength.....20 No points
Dexterity.....35 or 31 +4
Willpower....16 No points
magic........13 no points
Cunning......76 or 72 +4
Constitition.11 no points

Talents:

Lethality
Combat Stealth
Device Mastery
Master Archer
Arrow of Slaying
Rapid Shot
Bard: Song of Courage / Gives nice bonuses attack, damage, and critical chance's and its based on your kick ass high cunning score.
Ranger: Master Ranger / Well a little extra DPS would not hurt anyone except the one your pummeling.

Keep in mind that books can be found that grant you talent points to spend, I normally spend these points on the Device and Stealth trees.

Skills:

Master Combat Training
Master Coercion
Master Trap-Making
Expert Poison Making

Q and A

Q. Why only 35 Dex?
A. Anything over 35 is a waste, 34 is needed for Dragonthorn bows and you will receive equipment that will boost your dex attribute.

Q. Why crazy high cunning and only 20 strength?
A. Well with the talent "Lethality" your cunning score effects your ranged damage, also 20 strength is needed for Wade's Superior Drakeskin Leather set.

Q. WTF why only 11 constitution?
A. Well with combat stealth and a properly speced and planned team, you should never die just hit combat stealth when your health is low.

recommended longbows,

Any Dragonthorn Longbow, or keep an eye out for one of these.

Far Song
+2 Damage
Rapid Aim
+3% Ranged Critical Chance
+10 Attack
+10% Critical/Backstab Damage

Falon'Din's Reach
+2 damage
Rapid aim

Hope this helps...

You'd have 12 constitution, there's a total of 21 points in the fade, not 20. Constitution and Magic both have +2 in there.

Dwarf often seems to be overlooked for the rogue class, but they are a better choice than an elf. 10% spell resistance, +1 str, +1 dex, and +2 con, which helps at low levels, prior to getting combat stealth.

I prefer duelist to ranger if you're using high cunning, to compensate with +10 attack.

For a low Willpower archer I'd actually recommend Assassin as the second spec. The only thing you'd really want is Assassin's mark, but it's a damn good skill when you're pushing 50 to 100% critical chance. Actually making certain you're in a flanking position will generally ensure your attack actually hit, especially with Combat Movement.

Warrior archers should work fine, but I don't think I'd enjoy archery quite so much without the ability to use Stealth to force Scattershot crits. Cunning based archers also end up with armor penetration high enough that everything has an effective 0 armor.

you mention you're a console gamer, on a similar post that I made several people commented that lethality didn't work for bow damage on consoles but I can't find any confirmation of this.

People actually replied... Thanks for all your responses. I will try this build after the new DLC comes out. But there is still one thing I need help with. As a console gamer I only have X,Y, and B as my hot links. To use the other three I need to hit left trigger. What skill should I have hot keyed?

Hmm, well I play on pc, but the 3 talents I use most often would be Arrow of Slaying, Shattershot and Stealth.

Felon's Coat in Wade's shop and Wade's Superior line appear to be the best in light armor, IMO.

I'm running an Archer Rogue on Hard difficulty right now, and to be honest I'm having some significant trouble. My stats show an 80% hit rate, but only 30% contribution to party damage (although that's weird since highest damage it shows me hitting is 60 but I know I floored a couple trash darkspawn with Arrow of Slaying for well over 100).

In any case, my gear is Helm of Honnleath, Repeater Gloves, Harvest Festival Ring, Key to the City, Longbowman's Belt, Ancient Elven Armor (Felon's Coat wasn't available before doing Orzammar), some tier 7 leather boots with no stats.

I do really good consistent damage, but Morrigan throwing out Cold and Spirit Damage absolutely leaves me in the dust, and even Oghren is catching up.

I read some posts about uber-rogue archers, but I'm either doing it wrong or those people built sub-par mages and warriors. It's not even close. The only thing I have going for me is that I'm relatively impossible to kill due to stealth + 3 ranger pets I can spam and throw away if things go bad.

It's also possible that I built my talents in the wrong order. I went Ranger first for the pets as I was having a hard time surviving without Wynne in the party, and to be honest I find that the overpower the upgraded pets use is absolutely HUGE for my DPS. I'm at 30 cunning, rest dex, but maybe I should have gone bard first for the damage.

Maybe you'll have better luck than I did with the build.

Hmm. 80% hit rate seems quite low, but then I opted for Duelist instead of Ranger for the +10 attack.

If you enter stealth, go behind an enemy and use Arrow Slaying, you have a good chance of doing some major damage. It's quite possible to do over 600 damage with it.

That said, 30% contribution to party damage isn't at all bad.

Over 600 at level 15? I don't remember seeing anything close to that, just the few big crits for over 100. I don't pay attention when it's a one-shot though, and there are lots of those with Arrow of Slaying. Either way they aren't registering though, as I said my stat-tracker lists 60 as my biggest damage, shrug.

Yeah, I don't think 30% is bad per se, I just thought it would be higher after playing a DW rogue and being right around 40%... and with less effort tactically.

No worries though, I still think it's a fun class.

DW has the best DPS potential. An archer can't compete with that.

But yeah, 600+ damage is easy to achieve, but anything ranked elite or better is likely to resist the huge damage from the AoS. Try it on some basic Genlocks and Hurlocks and you should see a number like that before long.

I have finished game with rogue-archer on hard difficulty. Here is some differences I noticed compared to Phaelducan. I did not put a single point to stealth. I never use stealth, not for my char or for Zevran. I don't use poisons or traps at all. Ever. My specializations were Bard and Dualist. But: I had ExtraDogSlot-mod, so no need for ranger-pets. Very high cunning + lethality, high dex. Weapon: Mages Eye. Companions: Zevran as a Dualist, Ser Gilmore or Alistair tanking , and Wynne as a Healer. Thats it. Had no difficulties in any level. If I ever will play this game anymore, it will be another rogue-archer. And even I use lots of mods, I don't use anything that changes or enchances the game play or difficulty or tactics, save ExtraDog. There are mods ment for archers, but I have never tried them.

I have finished game on hard difficulty with warrior archer too. He had high strength and dex, specials were champion and reaver. If someone wants to play an archer, must understand they are supporters. Still, I did not need a high-damage mage or anything, so I guess I did decent damage too, even I did not pay so much attention what my hitrate was or contribution to party damage. But I think an archer can do a decent damage, if built that way, but I never had that in mind, so...everyone has own play style, and I can't say mine is something someone else would like.

I am breezing through on my max dex (cun 22) human rogue archer (dualist/assassin for additional dex bonuses) and leli for bard tunes. I do use max stealth because I like to "play rogue" and stealth, plant traps, use stealth in combat and stuff. But that's my playstyle, it's fun for me. And max dex archers rock in Awakenings with the accuracy talent. I'd never take ranger, unless I played solo. It's crap for an archer in non-solo. I don't use any mods.

I've never used stealth or trap making in any of my full party games, but as a solo rogue they work wonders.

I did not use Stealth for the longest time; prefer stand up fighting as a rule. But I liked the way you can lose a crowd, reposition for tactical advantage, disarm traps, Steal, scout, and generally play the dominant character in the party. But I still have yet to use traps or make bombs, though I have tossed a few.

I found this to be a very informative read on the subject, even though I prefer dex archers in DAO it still has a great deal of helpful information.

It feels really lame, but you can actually toss bombs without losing stealth. As a bonus, the enemies that are hit run to your location and then just stand in a group waiting for the next hit to come. As I say, it feels cheap, but there were times when I had to do it to survive.
