I told the cat I found her interesting, then I lied and said I 'd help her escape. Solved the puzzle, then killed the demon. Girl was ok.

You need to have Coercion 3rd level otherwise the demon will see through your lie - and the girl dies.

I told the demon I would set her free but she had to leave the girl...

Ask her how you can be freed then do the puzzle its hard at first but gets easier. I let her take the little girls body once and i felt like a total douche, trust me its just creepy i kill the desire demon everytime.

If your Coercion level is not level 3, do not even think about lying to the cat/demon. The demon will see through the lie. Instead just tell the cat you will not let her take the girl. Tell the demon if she wishes to be free she will have to leave the girl.
The demon will agree to the deal. Solve the puzzle, freeing the demon. The demon will try to renege on the deal. The little girl will get scared and run for her father. Kill the demon for your just reward.

I've failed the 'kitty lie' twice - both times with only a single rank of Coercion. Two ranks has gotten it done every time, even with low cunning characters.

I guess I am going to have to solve the puzzle.

Killing Kitty is a must! It has the best helmet of the whole game.

its really not hard to solve once you think out all the different slides. I can usually do it in less than 5 minutes (but as a child growing up I used to play with a similar puzzle with n umbered tiles I had to line up in order)

You can also fake out the demon without using persuasion. Instead of the lie/persuade option, just agree and then after the puzzle is done, tell the demon to get away from the girl. That will trigger the fight with the demon and Amalia will bolt, not allowing it to possess her.

Oh just let the demon go. In the end, you're the Grey Warden who's trying to get the whole world into arms against the Archdemon. Don't mind the little fish when you're aiming for the big one to fry.
Then again, I also defiled the Ashes the first time I went there.

Why would I do that? The reward is much worse for letting the demon escape. And defiling the ashes is harder than the alternative. I think it makes a lot more sense to save the girl and leave the ashes undisturbed. It's easier--the guardian is no joke to fight.

Well... obviously if you want the reward from killing Kitty, then you don't have a choice. Nothing there which I couldn't live without, besides the knowledge that the father would be running around with a girl in tow who is possessed by a demon is a good enough reward as is.
The guardian was annoying with his "I can read your mind", so leaving him face down on the floor was good so he wouldn't annoy anyone else.

I only fought the Guardian on one playthrough but I seem to remember kicking his --- in about two minutes flat, if that.
