Hi folks,
I'm hoping someone might be able to help as I've spent the whole day so far searching online and emailing back and forth with EA support.
The problem I am having is that as I am moving around in DA:O textures are disappearing. It seems to be based on the angle of the camera and as I move the camera around the textures will re-appear and disappear again. It's spoiling the atmosphere of a game that I am sure I will enjoy very much ... when I can actually play properly.
I've noticed the flickering appears a lot on ground textures but am also seeing it with other objects such as trees and pillars. At first I thought the textures were going black but instead it appears that they are simply disappearing.
Computer
Windows XP
8800 GTX 768mb
Soundblaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatality Pro
I have the latest drivers for my GPU and Sound Card. I have the latest DirectX 9. I have fully updated Windows XP.
I have tried:
Turning off AA / AF
Running the game on the lowest settings
Turning off VSynch and the other buffer effects option (sorry can't remember its name)
Changing resolutions (running at 16:10 widescreen)
Crying
Kicking the wall
Can anyone please help!?
Thank you in advance

Have you tryed rolling back video drivers to an older version?
http://www.guru3d.co.../driversweeper/
To remove or whatever you prefer.
http://www.nvidia.co...aspx?lang=en-us
Enter Info and try older one.
I use 181.51 myself no issues so far, so don't worry if your not using nvidia's latetest and greatest sometimes they aren't so great for certain users.

Thanks Levi,
Will try that tomorrow! The NVIDIA site doesn't seem to go that far back but does anyone else have any input as to driver versions that work (hopefully with the 8800GTX).
Cheers

Just try any older one, you don't have to use as old(ancient since its not even archived now) one as mine..
If you know one you have used in the past try it, if not it could be random one if its even the problem. Every PC/card is different.
From looking at an older thread I see someone with an 8800gts using 190.38 try it (it is a whql certfied not a beta)

Okay,
Still no joy - I've tried running 182.08, 190.38, 197.45 and the same thing occurs on each.
I don't know whether this means anything but it is a re-produceable problem - i.e. I can stand a character in a certain spot and rotate the camera to a certain angle and be guaranteed a section of floor will disappear. It looks abit like the way the roof sections disappear when you fully zoom out...
It's such a shame because apart from that I'm loving the game but in certain places it makes it impossible to play.
Hoping someone might come up with some magic!

0Running the game on the lowest settings
0Turning off VSynch and the other buffer effects option (sorry can't remember its name)
0Changing resolutions
0Changing Drivers
Tryed different patchs also I'm guessing..?
Also you haven't mentioned which processor you are using?

Done all of those...
No luck so far. Have also re-installed. Could it be a glitchy install disk?

So no go on,
Turning off AA / AF
Running the game on the lowest settings
Turning off VSynch and the other buffer effects option (sorry can't remember its name)
Changing resolutions (running at 16:10 widescreen)
Reinstalling
You pass sytem requirments/recommneded
Well hmm..
But to to check your install error idea, you can download the game for free(since you own retail) from ea. Big game so a big download, but thats a option.
Use the EA Download manager from ea store.Link or below

Hi again,
I do appreciate your help Levi, I got very little assistance from the official EA Customer Support team - basically just told me to check my computer met the requirements and / or to play the game on lowest settings - which defeats the object of spending the money I did on my machine (admittedly a couple of years ago).
Recommended specs are listed as:
# Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4 GHz Processor or equivalent - I have Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz (above required)
# 4 GB RAM (Vista) or 2 GB RAM (XP) - 2GB RAM running XP
# 20 GB HD Space - I might not have an additional 20GB after game install
# ATI 3850 512 MB or greater; NVidia 8800GTS 512MB or greater - I have 8800GTX 768mb
# Sound Blaster® X-Fi™” - X-Fi Xtreme Gamer Pro
# DVD ROM - Yes
I am tight on space as I haven't upgraded my HD for a while so it's possible I have something like 10GB left. Would this effect anything?
I vaguely remember a game a few years back having a similar problem and I had to clone the DVD and then install using a Virtual Drive... it's a long shot though!
Just as a matter of interest is anyone else having problems like this / with this card? I had a forum search but couldn't find much!
Thanks again!

You don't need 20 GB after Install. But you do need at least 20gb to install, but you seem to have 30gb total before install and that should be plenty.
I would not completly fill up my drive, but if you have a big drive and XP.
XP doesn't auto defrag, have you made sure your drive isn't fragmented making it hard to find the textures/files/info.
My Computer> Right Click Drive you Install on>propetries>tools>defragment>anazlyze
If you see a lot of RED you need to defrag, It will also recommend whether or not to defrag based on that I think. That may help...
As for cloning the DVD, I do not know.. you could try ripping it and making into an ISO but thats a long shot as you said. (Probably has copy protection against that not sure)
(Lol, EA is a big help huh? I keep hearing that...)
About your question, about your card.. maybe others will add more. Many people have issues with the 8 series cards and this game. I see many people with issues and the 8 series. It may be more people still are using it, but I do not know...

Actually, with Awakening and the Toolset, my DA installation directory (not counting the DB files and SQL server stuff the toolset requires) uses approx. 20.6 GiB. And while it's wasting some space due to cluster size, it's only around 34 MiB. Get rid of the toolset binaries and whatnot, and we're still talking about 19.5 GiB. Now add in the DLC that installs to the Documents folder, especially Shale and Warden's Keep, and we're comfortably above the 20 GiB mark again. And that's not counting all the inevitable save games, screenshots and DLC-yet-to-be. I could easily see a fully "tricked out" installation of DA pushing 30 GiB in the not so distant future.

Still no joy and last night saw me do the following:
- Clear space on my HD, now have 30GB after install
- Re-install display drivers (after using Driver Sweeper)
- Re-install all mobo drivers (nForce) - EVGA 680i SLI board
- Clean graphics card
- Run GPU-Z during gameplay (averaging 60 - 65 degrees - well within operating temps)
- Re-install DA:O with a new disk
- Tried setting the affinity to CPU 1 only
Nothing helped at all. I was in Lothering last night and it was nearly impossible to play with trees, floors, walls disappearing...very, very frustrating and not a single bit of help from EA support.
I might be a bit slow getting to the game but it does seem a shame that there seems to be little official support for people with issues - other than telling them their machine is borked!
Just for info I run plenty of other games on full settings (AA / AF and all) with absolutely no problems at all.
I'm just glad that this community forum is here and people are doing their best to assist! Appreciate it guys!
Failing a full install - which I really don't want to do, despite thinking the game is great... I'm at a loss.

", but you seem to have 30gb total before install and that should be plenty. " I ment 40 gb total, 20 to install, 20 afterwards.
However, for a comparison, right now with toolset/bioware(mydocuments folder)/install/1modeand 2dlc takes about exactly 20gb on mine. As for awakenings it has it's own hard drive space requirment doesn't it?
So they should say min 20gb, recommeneded maybe 25gb.
The back of the case for this game sucks so bad... specs don't match online specs, the whole windows 7deal... hard drive space.
I think they have several monkeys with crayons brain storming it up.
@OP, any progress?
EDIT: Damn

Will check out the defrag tonight but I'm not holding my breath. Beginning to think that I'm just not going to be able to play this game, which is a shame.
I wouldn't class myself as a fully-fledged geek but I do know my way around a computer and EA appear to be telling me that it's a problem with my machine - considering I've never had any issues before I don't see why - but I'll take a deep breath and keep trying. I suppose my last option is to reinstall Windows...

About to give up ... I must have spent longer trying to fix the game than I have actually playing it. I'm finding myself very frustrated because the EA help is along the lines of "It's your fault" and yet I've never had a single issue with any other game - and some of them have included some quite hefty usage of the GPU.
The defrag did nothing for the game unfortunately and now I'm left with the last option which is to reinstall Windows... or just give up!

I thought I would post some images to show what I'm experiencing.
I'm at a camp just outside Lothering and this is what I can see at one angle:
yfrog.com/8bshot2angleaj
I move the camera very slightly and all the floor textures disappear, leaving me looking at:
yfrog.com/5nshot2anglebj
And another two examples:
yfrog.com/2sshot1angleaj
yfrog.com/jushot1anglebj
This is a repeatable problem - i.e. I can go to the same angle each time and the textures disappear....
Anyone any ideas? Even if they tell me that my card is borked, would be better than nothing - although I can still play several games on full settings, full AA / AF etc...
Cheers
