Just wondering if they can be as effective (without the rapid fire) of ARs just running & gunning without zoom most of the time?

if you put more accuracy in it, i guess so
i mean, most of the time it should work, but you probably would have to not move for it to be very effective because i noticed that when you shoot with an unscoped sniper rifle that is high in accuracy (high enough at least), the shot usually hits the target unless they are too far or something like that
so it should work, but dont rely on only the sniper rifle if your gonna go running all over the place...
also, some shots might miss, so make sure you take cover or soemthing

No matter how much accuracy you have, you're not going to hit with a sniper rifle no-scoped while moving, with any kind of reliabiliy, from any further than kissing distance.
If you're looking for a running and gunning weapon with good accuracy, go for pistol.

^the whole not moving and crouchin was what i was trying to say, but i dont think i emphasized it enough...

Well, not necessarily JUST running and gunning, while behind cover also. I should have mentioned that heh. I just meant anything to replace the AR.
I saw a thread once where someone said to play Soldier BEFORE trying other classes. After my Vanguard, I can see why now.

well, the pistol is actually really good as a choice insted of an AR if thats what you like
and later in the game, the pistol actually has the highest dps, so it is pretty much liike the best gun type (not really sure, just what others told me and the mass effect wikia)

The pistol will have the highest dps, provided you have master marksman active. This was analyzed very completely over on the old ME forums. Most classes can achieve either close to permanent or permanent master marksman.
Here is the discussion on the old forums. The math is on around page 5-7

I'd agree that running and gunning with a sniper is kind of futile. But you can no scope reasonably well, if you kneel and have a high skill level with sniper. With high being anywhere from 8-12 skill points invested.

The sniper rifle is by a large margin the worst gun for running and gunning but then again ME is so damn easy that it's perfectly viable. I enjoy playing Sniper Adepts, I wouldn't recommend it as a best Adept but that's what I like to play and they lack any other trained gun to fall back on so sometimes I do end up running and gunning with the sniper. It's not a huge problem, especially when you have bastion stasis and other biotics to make hitting targets easier. So if you want to run and gun with the SR you can, though all three other gun types are better for that with Pistols being the best.

IIRC it's at 9pts that Sniper Rifle stops shaking like a drunkard in an earthquake.

I really don't recommend using the sniper rifle that way, OP -- not matter how good and accurate your rifle may be. Typically, you should be more methodical with the sniper rifle in order to get the most out of it. If you run-n-gun with a sniper rifle, you're as good as unarmed. It's just not how it's meant to be used.

Haha yeah, I was running around on my Infiltrator with the SR out and went: "Where the hell is my reticu--ohhh, now I get it."
Garrus just makes it look so easy, I guess.

A friend of mine did a strictly sniper rifle playthrough with the Infiltrator. Apparently, he managed it without ever bothering to zoom -- said it took a lot of practice learning to eyeball it. If an enemy came in close, he went to melee.
Thought he was bull****ting me at first, but I took the controls to get him past a segment on Pinnacle Station during his second playthrough of the game. To my surprise, I ended up unlocking his pistol achievement because he never used the thing.

i remember making a sentinel with the sniper rifle. i wanted a weapon to add the the versatility of the sentinel so i went sniper. i used my pistol mainly in the beginning of the game but as soon as i had a few points in the sniper rifle i was all about it. you can easily use it in CQC. the key is HE rounds tho so you have to be pretty high level. HE rounds send enemies FLYING whether you hit them or the floor near them. snipers sucked in terms or DPS compared to the pistol so id use the pistol if i wanted but all you have to do with the sniper rifle is walk up to bad guys and wait for the reticle to turn from blue to orange and then pull the trigger and boom. its really easy to use the sniper effectively outside of sniping. if you dont beleive me, try it. youll be impressed. its basically like the shotgun with a bit worse rate of fire.

The Infiltrator is my favorite class and most of the time I fight in "the frontlines". I use the Spectre Master Gear sniper rifle with two 'heat' attachments (produces less heat) and Incendiary Ammo. This basically turns the sniper rifle into a sub-auto sniper, I never have to stop shooting.
Unscoped shots are quite difficult imo but zooming in at close range works fine for me (Insanity).
