Hello to all,

I am really struggling with the dragon towards the end of this quest. I am a human warrior and with me I have Alistair, the dog and the ginger bird.

Those 3 get killed straight away and I do ok until the dragon picks me up and chews me to bits. This can happen right at the start of the battle, or annoyingly, when I have the dragon's energy quite low.

Any help on how to do this would be appreciated. This isn't even any cover spots or anything.

well first, what level of difficulty do you play? You must have a mage in your group. Group healer with revive spell is good. Usually it's Wynne, but Morrigan is altought better. Try sleeping the dragon and doing horror spell. Unfortunately, it seems not to work anymore when 1.02 patch made normal difficulty more tougher. With hard difficulty, dont even try it.
High Dragon seems to be more resistful, after downloading 1.02 patch.
I reccommend using Alistair ( Shale is also one possiblity, but he can't be healed so well) Wynne or Morrigan ( heal spell and revive MUST, group heal spell advantage). If you can make traps, do large claw traps near dragon. Remember, when dragon flies over the traps, traps will be triggered and do no dmg. Large grease trap slow downs the dragon easily. You can use Leliana making traps and doing the supporting archer role. It doesn't really matter, is there 3 warriors and one mage against dragon or 2 warriors, archer and a mage. Make traps also near the mage, like freeze trap, so the mage can escape and stay alive (NOTICE: if mage dies, you are most likely to fail)
My plan: make lots of traps in the middle of the ruins where you are going to call High Dragon. Move mage and archer away from each other but still towards the entrance of the ruins. Use warm salves, if you want. Call the dragon, and taunt with alistair (or threaten) and make other warrior(s) attack behind the dragon (the are less likely to be attacked by fireballs). Try horror, stoning or freezing the dragon. Don't worry if Alistair dies, he will do it a lot cuz he takes most of the dmg. Just revive him and the other warrior is "entertaining" the dragon. Remember, when dragon is going to fly, it's going to kill your mage (or archer). You must hope that freeze traps work. Then you are going to fight in clear field.
Move your mage ( and archer) away from the dragon and let Alistair take the dmg. Again, move other warrior(s) behind the dragon. If the dragon is trying to fly, try freezing it. After succesful freeze spell, it doesn't continue flying away.
Most annoying is not when High Dragon tears Alistair in peaces with its jaws...it's when High Dragon roars. Watch out the roar :D
I recommend not using rogue melee. I had one main character like that, and even I haven't done it yet.
P.S you can always come back to High Dragon and still get same xp and loot. Just kill it when you are ready.
E: sorry my english ;D i'm finnish you know. Hopefully you get the right idea.

Cheers for the info, Pure.

I actually managed to do it after a couple more attempts after posting this. I still had Alistair, the dog and the ginger girl in my team, but how I did it this time was by changing my armour. I still had the legion armour in my inventory, so I put that on my character and gave Alistair my previous armour.

Alistair and the girl died pretty quickly and then the dog died when I got the dragons health downto about halfway.

Thats when the dragon picked me up at full health and dropped me with just enough health so that I could use a lesser health potion.

Next playthrough I will remember to take Wyanne lol.

EDIT : Just noticed I posted this in the wrong forum. If a mod wants to move or delete it, thats cool.

- ya need a healer, two is better

- basic tank and spank team : tank (warioir with shield), damage dealer(s) & healer

- Morrigan with one point in healing can be handy with Wynne as main healer

- tactic, alot of stopping and starting, mana and health potions are good too. (my main character, a rogue i left beating on the dragon, who had agro for most of the fight while i mainly controled Wynne's healing)

If you don't mind a bit of "cheating", you can always bring a ranger with a pet wolf along. The High Dragon has the hardest time hitting a wolf - it will constantly miss it with fireballs and fire breath, and I have even have instances where the dragon will not even reposition itself because it was stuck up against a wall...by a wolf of all things.

^That is the easiest way to do it, but all you really need to survive the bite attack are lifeward and regen along with some spot heals, so a spirit healer is best.

If you're not listening to Gone Guru while fighting the High Dragon/Arch Demon then you're doin' it wrong.

I went to the stone encirclement to the right as you come out of the temple and summoned the dragon there. Once the dragon rofflestomps my party, I'll kite from that encirclement out of it and around a corner which causes the dragon to fly up and out and land a short distance nearby, then I run back in. The dragon will fly back up and land back inside. Both times there will be a brief moment of respite in which you can safely (relatively) run up and get a skill off without getting knocked over, mauled or otherwise chewed on. Rinse and repeat until it's dead. Bam, solo'ed!

Took a while though. I did this on my rush playthrough when I got DA:OA

My party for defeating the high dragon the first try was Myself, Shale, and Oghren tanking with Morrigan healing and using the freezing spell on the dragon to slow him down frequently.

I tackled the Dragon At lvl 21.

I had Alistar ( Sword and Shield ), Leliana ( Archer ) , Morrigan ( She wasn't a Spirit Healer ) and Myself ( Sword and shield )

The trick is to keep your tankers away from the rest of the team. Keep the party in hold position so that you can individually control them. This way the rest of the part doesn't come running towards the dragon especially if you are a tanker.

Also, engage the dragon in a particular place. While returning from the temple the dragon is on your left. A little ahead there is small clearing with an elevated place ahead of which there is a small ruins with a couple of chests.

Keep you tankers in the clearing and keep the rest on the small mound. If you are a tanker then just blow the horn from the place else go next to your tankers blow the horn and run to the elevated place.

Now Just engage the dragon. The Dragon can't reach the elevated place so you are kind of safe. But his ranged attacks do so be careful. It would help a lot if your caster was an Arcane specialised one. You get 75% resistance on all elemental dmg ( I guess )

If you engage the Dragon elsewhere use the tips from the second para and also. When the dragon flies up pause and give order to your tankers and rest of the gang to switch places. Usually the dragon goes after the one who causes most dmg ( casters ). This way when the dragon lands at your casters place it finds the tanker/tankers there.

Rinse and repeat :P

The real trick I found in any High Dragon battle is to use the Pause option effectively and controlling your members individually.

I have an unusual party (level 11 - 13ish); Male warden going the 2H DPS/Tank build (already completed the Juggernaut armor set), Dog, Leliana (as an archer) and MOrrigan as a healer/support caster (where's the "revive" spell??) and I'm just about to start the Urn of Sacred Ashes quest.

Will I have problems if I pick a fight with the dragon right away?

Thanks

The dragon's level (and the level of all enemies) is determined by the level of your PC when you first enter the area. Your party should work fine. The revive spell is in the spirit healer specialization (mage) which you may not have yet. If you have any fire resistant gear, equip it. Keep a close eye on health and mana (and bring lots of health potions). I tend to position my party in a wide circle around the dragon so that she can't nail more than one of them at a time. Keep moving your melee folks to attack from behind so that she doesn't chew on them. I've had more trouble keeping 2H warriors alive with the dragon than any other build unless their dex is fairly high.

I was going to start a new topic, but since this is here I amy as well ask.

I have fough the dragon three times, and have noticed the same (strange) pattern, so I wonder if it is a viable tactic or just coincidence.

I played it with my mage, Alistair, dog (with the extra dog mod) and a combiantion of Zevran/Stern/Leliana. Stern or, if he was not in the party, Alistair, carried Yusaris.

The dragon was a **** to pinpoint, as it kept fliing away. But once it had killed all the melee fightes, it stood on the same location, simply sending fire to me and Leliana. Once I reached this point, suddenly a very hard battle became an easy cicle of health poultice/range spell/lyrium potion until the beast was gone.

I am going to try a solo mage vs. dragon battle next time, and check what happens -my expetiment with Flemeth, which does not move ever, did prove quite successful, if slow, since she always killed half my party and I was able to do her all alone-

P.D: Sami, The dragon's level is determined by the level of your PC, but I _think_ (I may be wrong) than it has a minimun of 15, so it may be too dangerouns at level 11-13ish

You can fight dragons with staves if you want to avoid their melee attacks. Stand just outside of their sweep range and you should be ok. The high dragon/archdemon will then stick with breath attacks.

If your tank has a good armor rating, then they should be ok with this fight. Just make sure you have a mage that keeps the healing coming (heal, group heal, regeneration), and force field if it looks like the tank is in trouble.

If you happen to do a solo mage as an arcane warrior with shimmering shield, you'll be in good shape with the high armor rating and fire resistance.

Hi there. Tried fighting that dragon in the Sacred Urn quest and beat him on my first try. Quite funny that in my party, it was Dog who landed the final blow. :D

Another tactic is to make a ton of freeze traps, large claw traps, etc. and place them under the dragon as it is about to land this should deal a lot of damage and the freeze traps might even freeze the dragon.
