Do traps really help or are they weak? I am a melee fighter for the most part and am trying to broaden my horizons with a rogue archer. Was wondering if buying trap recipes and crafting materials are worth it. It seems like they are expensive to make and since they can only be used once, I wonder if I should save my money for other things.
Traps worth it?

the whole poison / trap-making stuff can be pretty powerful, but it helps IMO to have a little bit of a money cheat. it also kind of boils down to playing style. warriors can pick up poison making 1 to toss around bombs and apply poison, but don't go further than that. as a rogue, try them both out and see if you can make them work.
my rogue <- used a lot of flasks at the start, but she's moved into archery and powerful poisons now.

Don't bother laying caltrops as my stealthed rogue always seems to end up standing on his own and getting revealed!Traps are v handy for taking an enemy out of the fight a few seconds, or blocking a doorway when enemies are spilling out to attack you.
Orzrammar is a good place to lots of metal shards iirc.

Used them a bit, didn't seem worth it. Felt like the skill points I put into traps could be better spent elsewhere.

They are worth it if you know how to use them correctly. I tended to place them in front of the Alphas. Once you get up there with the powerful ones they can dole out a lot of damage.

caltrops are best combined with grease traps, greatly slow down the opponent, doing slow damage over time, acid grease trap +poision caltraps are the best for thise
don't buy alot of elemental traps they alld work the same buy one (soul rot are a decent buy)
disorianting traps, IO done't see much use in them so meh
the claw typs are best put in front of enemies use them to slow down a frontline in conjunction with sleep and grease traps
spring traps are good to slow enemies down best use on a group that is behind the first one,
sleep traps are the best and perhaps over powered, knocks out a group for a short time use those the most

I know it is cheap but there is a part late in the game were I know there will be a ambush. Laying down certain traps in the area before it is triggered it helps. I also have placed traps in doorways then let my tagets follow me back to traps for some clean fun
Everyones mileage may be different but I also I crazy or dumb enough to get traps with my mage

Your rogue/stealth- put your group on hold and send the rogue ahead and set traps in front of a door where the baddies come out,go back to the group and watch the fun.

Seems like a waste of time to me. Most of the time you can probably destroy the enemy in the time it took to set the traps. Especially if you use stealth to sneak around a bit first, moving your other party members around, or whatever you do to set up the ambush. No?
I don't have a problem with people using traps, of course not, I've just personally been unable to appreciate trapmaking and traps.

It totaly depends on your play style. Cyberfrog, I'm betting you play a mage or warrior? Stealth players spend quite a bit of time stealthing around. It's what we do!

I enjoy using the traps I find. I just don't enjoy hunting down recipes(which are expensive) and carrying around the junk to make traps. It seems I am always low on inventory space, and adding multiple types of traps, and their components seems to make it a lot worse. I guess that is the biggest reason, too much inventory management and juggling space.

Great for a solo rogue game.

Traps are great to have in the game, but, like most RPGs, there are more convenient solutions to your problems at your fingertips already. Why bother with traps when you can just hit it with a sword? Traps provide no real gameplay or story benefits, so all you're really doing is spending more money and taking longer to achieve the same results that Paralyze or Crushing Prison would.

I feel the same way. My rogue put a few points in trap-making and used some of the basic ones on occasion, but I soon came to the conclusion that I could deal with enemies just as effectively using other, less expensive means. I think the whole trap system would have been better if they were more like glyphs; that is, they wouldn't be dependent on crafting components, but you can only lay down a finite number of them at a time, and they'd have a finite duration with a long cooldown. It would be less realistic, but I know I'd be more willing to incorporate traps into my general strategy if I didn't have to constantly think "it cost me fifty silver to create a trap to incapacitate that genlock for ten seconds".

Well, my Rogue is actually my favourite. But true enough, I didn't particularly enjoy stealth or solo (e.g. the Fade) gameplay.Arkitekt_Dante wrote...

I can see traps being more useful when you don't have a mage and/or tank around.

Like others said, it depends on your gameplay. I ignored traps the first couple of playthroughs, but used them extensively in my last game. It added a fun element but I also realised just how powerful judiciously placed traps are. I'm gearing up for my first nightmare solo and anticipate using traps a lot. What I spent on traps was offset by lower spending on health & lyrium potions.
