Why not?  We were all warned that Thane wouldn't be back.  Doesn't make sense that other characters should be written out just because they have one, trivial detail in common with Thane.

"I am dying" - Thane at his recruitment mission.

Yeah, trival. Downsizing anyone's life-span due to something out of their control is pretty bad, I wouldn't call it trival detail, it's more major.

To be honest, if thane dies. it kindof sucks and I feel for the guy, but I wouldn't be surprised. It would suck since it would break the dirty dozen  up.

When was that info released about Thane? I don't remember that.

Since we're speculating here:

My guess? There will be 2-3 (4?) "possible" returning squadmates from ME2 in ME3 - and if they did not survive your playthrough they will be replaced with alternate, new characters on import. That seems the easiest to program for, with the smallest "wasted" dialog, etc. if any specific character isn't used. I'd also hazard a guess that Liara, and butt-hurt ME1 squadmate (from Horizon) will be back too.

Also: Dead shep = no import (that's obvious, right?)

Yeah, you can't import a dead shepard save.

Thane says "I'm dying" to Shep - one of the first time they talk after recruiting him.

i can see compelling reasons for all surviving squadmates to return for ME3

i read somewhere that ME3 was in development at the same time ME2 was sort of similar in the way the Lord of the Rings movies were made, i am sorry but i can't remember the source. but i think with the extra time and using the same work that has already been done, it does seem plausible that ME3 picks up not very far in the future so that your entire squad returns

-Kaiden/Ashley will come back.
-Legion can come back, since he is Geth
-Liara
-Wrex/Wreav
-Aria will become a squad mate
-Hal Reager (sp?) will become a squad mate
-The C-Sec officer Bailey will become a squad mate
-Thane's son is also a possibility

I highly doubt Wrex, Aria, and Bailey would be squadmates. As interesting as it would be for them to be squadmates, it wouldn't feel right to me if they were squadmates.

The characters such as Aria and Bailey could possibly be... we are already introduced to them, so we don't need to delve into their backgrounds as we have been doing with our recruits in ME2.  And because we can't recruit them and we already know them, they become characters we are familar with and recruitable in ME3, so we can concentrate on story more than characters.

ME2 really was all about the characters, because I believe every character we can have in our squad, we have already seen them in ME2.  It even says in Shepard's report after Thane's loyalty mission that Bailey is a potential recruit.  And Aria, we definitely haven't heard the last of her, and knowing what's at stake, she could join the cause.

Lee John Garrus and Wrex are the only squadmates I care about.

And anyone who thinks Thane's son should be a Squadmate is a half retarded adult baby. He's just some kid with a gun and father figure issues. I could go down to the 9th ward, well whats left of it and find some kid with both of those.

I agree, don't want Thane's son as a squad mate... but his introduction to the universe makes him a possibility as a replacement for his father... though most likely not since he's not as trained as his father.

Thane might be cured it could be a possibility. As for the people who said, only three or four might come back this is a possiblilty as well, but there is also a fact in some of the side missions if you transfered your ME 1 game over to ME 2 the NPC might not even make an appearances or be replaced. What happens if their story is just over. I see bioware does this much more then actually replacing them with an NPC. The reason is because it just makes sense. I mean we saw there story at the end of the suicide mission when they died. There was a coffin and that was it simple and easy. Sad, but true. Plus it was save them time and effort so they could give us ME 3 on time.

How much of the dialogue in the games already is "necessary?"

Wouldn't it be less work to not introduce too many new people in ME3 and mostly use people who have been established? So, 12 at most live through ME2, bring in the remaining 3 from ME1, that's 15, but then you take away some of the least likely to stay and you have about 10 squadmates left.

Does BioWare really want to keep introducing loads of new, important people during the finale of their sci-fi trilogy?

On, the contrary. Such a person should be rewarded in some way. Becase it's goddamn harder than to keep the team alive. A bonus mission in ME3 should suffice.

Agreed, I rather think I should be rewarded for managing to complete the game with only two squad mates alive.  Much more challenging than simply getting everyone through.

I could maybe see an exception for Tali and Garrus but the rest of the LI are just flings really

From what I've read on these boards I doubt fans of the other LI's would agree with this statement.

Couldn't agree more. Thane, a fling? Really? I've had some flings in my life but none of them were with a mortally ill guy weeping in my bedroom because he's afraid to die. (Now, because he has fallen in love with Shep and a reason to live)

Jack, a fling? No way. Not after seeing her Paragon Romance. (Renegade sex WAS a fling though)

But he also says he should be fine for another 8-12 months. (Then he'll most likely be too sick to fight, otherwise he'd have said "I'll be fine for 3-4 months & be dead within a year") Depending on how long Bioware figures it took to take out the Collectors, he should still be there, unless he died during the suicide mission. It's not like the Normandy will be flying around till Thane dies and THEN ME3 begins.... I hope....

I can see them bring back everyone + Liara + Virmire surivior. If someone died, well you don't get their dialog and you can't get any potential side mission (if any). I see alot of the characters have already been "wrapped up" in terms of loose ends. A handful got some loose ends, but otherwise, most do not. It would be more cost effective/time efficient to have them be on the ship or whatever, ready to go then give everyone missions. You give the missions to the handful who have loose ends to tie up their stories, and introduce two more missions for Liara/Virmire. I see little point in expanding on the characters as an whole unless they got loose ends.

Zaeed has Vido if you didn't kill him.

Kasumi has the grey box.

Tali/Legion is an obivious one,

grunt/Mordin with the Genophage is an obivious one.

Miranda/Jacob with leaving Cerbersus.

Total of 7 side missions besides the main plot line, and two or three of these come into mind as "main plot" anyway. Easily doable.

Thing is, if no ME2 squadmates will return, then the whole ME2 was pointless. After all, the whole game centered on gathering the squad, and there was very, very little accomplished aside that.

Kasumi and Zaeed= optional DLC, which means their appearances are not mandatory

Samara/Morinth: Not really interested. Samara *MAY* come back, but it's strongly hinted she's going to do her own thing, though I was proven wrong about Tali.

Thane: May be dead

Mordin: May croak from old age.. He better have that Genophage cure ready at the beginning of ME3.

Jack: May not come back unless she's an LI

Have you all ever thought that maybe just maybe Bioware might punish you for being dumb and letting a squad mate die leaving you without said squad mate in ME3? How about your reaally dumb and you let everyone die?? Weeell Liara and Ashley/Kaiden will still be there..anything is possible.

I personally know at least Samara says she will stay just off the top of my head if you get to the end of her dialogue..

They could easily toss them in ME3 as default characters with an default choice if you have not made one. They certainly did with the council and other choices.

Hmmm... so she has something better to do than fight reapers and save the galaxy? Sounds like an just sucide mission to be, which justicars drawn to like moths.

Thane: May be dead

No arguements there. Either way, his story is pretty wrapped up as is, so is alot of characters. But not every squadmember needs an mission in ME3.

Mordin: May croak from old age.. He better have that Genophage cure ready at the beginning of ME3.

Doubt that old devil is gonna croak right now but always an possbility. Not like he was on his deathbed in ME2, looked fairly alive and kicking as ever.

Jack: May not come back unless she's an LI

She got no where to go and if you make her loyal and still loyal, why would she leave? She knows that the reapers will kill everything anyway.

Proof is in Bring Down The Sky. No news announcements were made about that colony unless we imported the data. On top of this, Zaeed and Kasumi were not integral into the plot except just to fit the "Dirty Dozen" aspect of the squad.

Hmm, no argument there after reading your response.

Maybe. We don't know how much of a time gap there is between ME2 and ME3. For all we know, Mordin will be dead in a prologue.

She got no where to go and if you make her loyal and still loyal, why would she leave? She knows that the reapers will kill everything anyway.

Loyalty and shelter aside, why would Jack want to stay? She is more or less withdrawn from everyone else unless Shep's her boyfriend.

legion: i can see him going back to his people preparing for what ever plot twists unfold in ME3

Legion doesn't get back to his people because he is his people. He is always connected to Geth and is a unit specifically designed to communicate with Sheppard, so I see no reason for him to go away. If you choose to keep him I hope you keep with him until the end.
To prepare to what ever plot twists unfold in ME3 he just needs to reach a consensus with the Geth.
