** warning: english isn't my native language **

As I said on another topic, I decided to restart my game and I'm on my second playthrough. On my first playthrough, I played about 22 hours and had the following companions on my party:
1) Alistair
2) Morrigan
3) War dog
4) Leliana
5) Sten
6) Zevran

This means that there was 2 official companions left to join, Wynne and Oghren, and Shale.

I was playing with an Arcane Warrior, focused on buffs, in the hard difficulty and was using the following characters:
1) Morrigan
2) Leliana
3) Sten

Yes, this is the same party of the Sacred Ashes trailer.

Sten helped me a lot and was my main tank until I unlocked the arcane warrior specialization. I liked him since the beggining because he reminds me a lot of John Coffey of the movie The Green Mile ( www.imdb.com/media/rm392599808/tt0120689 ). I thought that he was kinda the type of guy that doesn't talk much, but has interesting/unusual thoughts. Another thing is that his story didn't make much sense for me. I kinda feel like he isn't guilty for his crimes and he might reveal something to me later. (please, don't spoil this)

I chose Morrigan because of all the hype about her in the forums. Ok, she seemed cool in the trailer (as everybody else) but I didn't like her that much in game. She is sarcastic all the time and is somewhat "evil" (Yes I know that there is no good/evil in this game and in the end it's all a matter of perspective as Sten mentions), which is okayish. The problem is that I usually pick "neutral/slighty good choices" in the game and Morrigan usually doesn't agree with my point of view. She is somewhat powerful because she is a mage, but I thought that the shapeshifter specialization was useless. I still kept her because I wanted to do the romance part, but after that I got turned down and wanted to dump her. The things that I liked more about her were in the beggining when she was talking with Alistair in the Wilds/Lothering (and I removed him to make the "Sacred Ashes party") and that she isn't much religious.

Now about Leliana. If I had to choose between dating Leliana or Morrigan, I would choose Leliana (after all, I never felt much like as I was dating Morrigan. It looked more like she was using me for her own pleasure). I like her personality (and even enjoy her "french accent" as some people mentioned here) but I didn't like her religious beliefs. I didn't find her particularly strong neither particularly weak (I gave a bow to her). She has the talents to unlock traps/lockpick which looked pretty useful. I didn't like much her romance compared to Morrigan because she is too religious and romantic for me (which is somewhat controversial to what I said in the beggining of this paragraph), still she used to agree with my point of view in other type of dialogues.

I didn't play with Zevran at all, but he looked stronger than Leliana. The problem is that he doesn't have unlock traps/lockpicking talents and that sucks. At least he has poison making which is useful for him since he can dual wield daggers.

At some point in the game, I kinda missed Alistair talking (at least with Morrigan) and I wanted to put him back in the party. There wasn't much room for him (1 tank, 1 mage, 1 rogue with lockpicking) but I decided to replace Sten. He was 2 levels behind Sten in terms of XP and I felt like restarting.

So I started a new game, making basically the same decisions that I made before (actually I'm choosing even more neutral choices in the dialogue now) and I'm in Lothering again. Sten joined my party. As I don't want to gain a lot of XP with a character that I  won't use, I decided that this is a good time to decide which companions I'm gonna play with until the end of the game.

I read somewhere that Shale is pretty funny and I can't wait to see him/her/it, as I have no idea of how he/she/it looks. I read that the golem is a good tank, but I don't think that is a smart decision to keep him/her/it and another tank as my main is an Arcane warrior with buffs.
Based on my dialogue with Wynne in Ostagar's camp, I didn't like her that much because she seemed pretty religious but we didn't talk that much and I might had a wrong impression. I read that she is a powerful healer, but so far I have been surviving pretty well with potions. My plan is to add Spirit Healer as my second specialization to my Arcane warrior too.
I don't know anything about Dwarf companion. I only know that he is another 2handed tank.

Based on those things, I have some questions:
1) Are the items in locked chests good/important enough to let Leliana in the party just for that particular reason?
2) Is Alistair that cool as he seemed, even without Morrigan on the party (in terms of dialogue/plot role)?
3) If you were in my situation, playing a not religious mage with specialization in Arcane Warrior+Spirit Healer, making neutral/slighty good decisions, what party members would you choose?
4) In relation to the other 3 companions that I didn't use: can you classify them as good/bad/neutral for me?

PS: Try to not spoil too much, as I didn't finish the game yet

Thank you for the help

I had Alistair (tank) Wynne (heals) and Leliana (locks/traps) go along with my primal mage (who's holding up over half the total % dmg rofl). That was mostly just my idea of a standard balanced party, but also because I was RPing a good character and they were all happy with it. Although: as long as you have a mage (or two) with a healing spell (or two) you don't need a full specced one. Nor did Leliana seem completely necessary---it just irritates me to leave behind locked treasure chests. >_>

I'm also looking for a different party for my next playthrough, and I can't decide who to romance/with what class... although I still <3 Alistair so maybe I will just try a different ending with him haha.

the treasure in the chests are rarely worth it, but the EXP to unlock them are, same for disarming trap.

yea I forgot about the XP earned when disarming traps, it's pretty good

Can someone answer the other questions? (2 3 and 4)
so far I have been thinking in going with Alistair+Leliana+another member (Shale? Sten? Morrigan? Oghren?), but I don't know well the other characters to take a decision right now

I loved Alistair because I loved his conversations with Morrigan which made me laugh. Shale was an almost constant companion because he could not only take a ton of dmg but dish it out as well and has some good talents. I'd say Shale starts out neutral/neutral good. I'd say Shale and Sten have a similar role but I prefer Shale over Sten. Also, Shale talks more. I ended up having to uh...not take Wynne into my party because I couldn't(don't want to do the spoiler thing). I had to travel with Oghren in the deep roads because I had to and I hated it because he sucked up so much of my healing stuff. On the other hand, he taught me Berserker. By the end of the game, my party looked like this:

Main:

Me, dmg warrior

Alistair, templar

Shale, tank, off tank

Morrigan, dmg and aoe

I also travelled with Leliana from time to time, to take Alistair's place. Also next time, I'm just gonna kill Zevran and be done with it. Once you train up Leliana enough, I don't see the point of having him in the party.

Personally I did what kaispan did - Alistair, Wynne and Leliana. Alistair was my tank, Wynne my healer with a little damage and Leliana was DPS and lockpicking. I was playing an Arcane Warrior/Spirit Healer; I had all four AW talents by end game (the last one is very useful, plus wearing armour meant I could wear the Dragonscale light armour and actually have a positive fatigue, except when in the Arcane Warrior stance mode, which meant it was a pittance of a down side), the first three Spirit Healer abilities (largely as I ran out of things to get, I was only going to get the first two - group heal and revive are awesome to have on two people on those rough fights) and I maxed out the Fire, Ice and Force trees (Mmmm, cone of cold and Force Shield and Crushing Prison are great for some control) as well as two into the Mage tree.

I was doing about 50% of the group's damage the entire game :)

This time I am going for a more morally ambiguous character - a Dalish Ranger - and I'll probably get Shale, Wynne and Oghren as my group.

2. Yes, Alistair has good banter with everyone and speaks up in plot conversations as much as he would with Morrigan. In fact, I think he might have the most interjections of any party member.

3. I would choose Shale, Alistair and Leliana, or perhaps Shale, Wynne and Leliana. Wynne is a healer, so she might duplicate your PC's healing role. Shale is versatile; it can be a tank, a ranged fighter, a DPS machine or do party buffs.

4. Wynne is Good; she really fits the standard good archetype, but is also somewhat of an interesting character once you get to know her. She is religious, but not in the way Leliana is; she's more of a quiet, tolerant type and she doesn't hear the Maker's voice in her head. If you choose evil options, she will not be a happy camper. To compare her to another Bioware game, she would be a straight-up light side Jedi in Kotor.
Shale is neutral, but it has the occasional strong opinion that you may disagree with playing as a good character. On the things that really matter to it, Shale should agree with a good PC. Shale also has an interesting background and hilarious banter with the other companions.
Oghren is neutral and very very funny. He has a good back story and hilarious banter. I got him last of all, so I'm not sure about how he reacts to all the major decisions, though I imagine he's pretty cool with whatever you decide in most cases. His banter with Wynne is priceless.
Edit: I didn't run through with a single party, although I left Morrigan behind more and more because I needed a rogue and healer to compliment my 2H berserker dwarven warrior. At first I used Leliana since Zevran doesn't come with any lockpicking skills, but I switched to Zevran because he's much better in a fight. If I knew there weren't going to be many chests in an area, I'd go with a party that had Alistair, Shale/Sten/Oghren and Wynne for maximum effectiveness.
