got as far as going to going to redclif to talk to Dwyn. during the conversation i told him it was a good idra to just give the key. suposedly he did so. i continued the conversation and convinced him to go defend the town. i then went to his chest. its still locked. no way to open it. so i think i will just come back after the fight and talk again. no such luck, cant bring it up again.  i gues if he agrees to let you get the sword  you have to exit the c onversation there or its ruined.

is there any way to fix this or do i have to redo radclif again?

Check your inventory in the gifts section. If you have Sten in your party, Dwyn will give you the sword directly without even a Persuade or Intimidate check.

wow your right, in the past i had gotten it out of the chest so never realized that. thanks!

I always find it amusing that by the time I get Sten's sword, I've already got two or three better greatswords in my inventory, so Asala tends to go straight into the storage chest.
