google has let me down once again, but: why does Shepard keep insisting Saren destroyed the beacon? Is that just him assuming that Saren had something to do with it blowing up after his vision?

The way the dialog is written sounds like there's some concrete proof that he did it.

Sloppy writing, honestly. I had my Shepard point out to Anderson that Saren went to Eden Prime for the beacon and not on some vendetta against humans, but when it comes time to argue with the Council, suddenly paragon/neutral Shepard is pointing out that Saren went to Eden Prime because he hates humans.

I don't know if the inconsistency is due to different writers writing different segments of the game or if the story changed so much that they forgot to change dialogue to reflect such changes.

Yeah, that would make sense now that you mention it. At that scene you're talking about I always ask Anderson why Saren hates humans now cos of that too, heh. I find a lot of dialog options I paraphrase in my head or just go with what was on the wheel (sometimes those few words sound a lot better than the entire line IMO).

Saren fully intended for the beacon to be destroyed along with the rest of the colony. Shepard and crew thwarted that plan by disarming all those bombs. If you remember right, Saren got just a little bit upset when Benezia told him that the colony had been saved and the beacon had been used. Personally I think Saren did somehow sabotage the beacon to blow up if anyone else tried to use it, with the intent of also killing whoever activated it.

What I don't understand is why he didn't just take the beacon with him when he left Eden Prime.

Knew he was being followed at that point and had to move quickly, I suspect.

Makes sense. Once he met Nihlus, he knew he'd have to hurry.
