what are the names for the two grasstextures?

Open a similar level from the main game and check which ones they used :).

what about grass types. there doesn't seem to be any type that can really fill an area to make it look good. wheat works well in that regard but i can't use that on the grass fields.

tall, medium and short grass is capable of doing this. i would not cover all of the surface with grass because the engine isn't that potent and framerate will drastically drop. just create an island of grass here and there and it should work. the rest is good usage of textures and other stuff like stones to break the view.

Agreed. When it comes to vegetation, usually less is more or it just looks messy. Get the bulk of your visuals from texture work and then add vegetation to break up the scene. I typically try and choose two grass textures, one lighter and one darker. The lighter one I will use for the higher portions of terrain and the darker ones wherever there are creases or valleys. It gives the impression of shadowing and terrain variation. From there you can also mix the two textures in various spots just to break up the monotany. Best thing is to just play around with it a bit and try different things. Good luck.
