I always knew Alistair wasn't completely heterosexual.,.I mean, just think of that lamp post conversation. He must just be very picky when it comes to guys.

Wait seriously? lmao
How would you start a romance with him? I never saw any dialogue choice I thought I should avoid to not become romantic with him lol

You can only do it if female, or if you have a mod that makes Alistair swing both ways.

Otherwise, any tragic romances with Alistair are solely bugs.

No, in a vanilla game, he's young, dumb, and quite straight. All his love dialogues are female specific. For some reason, the game sometimes randomly flags male characters with high approval with him as "romanced", hence the rather unexpected break-up.

Even the mids that allow males to romance or marry Alistair, the conversations/vos in the game are clearly speaking to a female.

Yea, I never understood what's so great about the lampost metaphor in a romance, except that it's most probably a Freudian slip.

It's in the delivery. Alistair, with his goofy virginal charm make's that the bell to Pavlov's dog of many female gamers.

You wouldn't understand. It's an estrogen poisoning moment.

It didn't get me.  I was sitting there thinking, "Do you know what you're saying?!  Ever heard of a 'phallic symbol'?"

I also fail to see the attraction in virginity but that line is interesting... I wonder why they chose that metaphor, how could anybody not associate it with that especially in a game where characters don’t hesitate to call the mage’s tower a giant phallus?

Morrigan's the one who called it that. And can you imagine if he tried to have that conversation with her? I mean, even ignoring the fact that they hate each other...wow, she'd go places with that. Posted Image

He is one biologically confused bi, then. Maybe Zevran needs to take him aside and explain some of the benefits of man to man sex. It's obviously they never told him about that part in the Chantry.

I'm pretty sure he'll just say "Not listening. Lal-la-la-la-la!" like when Zevran tried to coach him on heterosexual time.

Leliana has ninja loved me at least twice now (HNF each time, engaged to Alistair). But Zevran never has. I am always very cautious when conversing with both of them as I am not interested in a romance with Leliana and Zevran gets too miserably sad faced if you have to tell him you want to be with Alistair instead. He's my BFF in all my games and I just get sick if I see that face as he takes it REALLY hard. That said I have learned after any convo I think may have triggered it on them I usually check and reload if it happened accidentally.

It may just be my interpretation, but I think Alistair knows exactly what he is saying and how it will be taken.  He says "oh, that's what we're talking about" in a completely nonchalant way.  If he had no inkling that his example would be understood as phallic, he'd get flustered.  He also moves very easily back and forth from talking about the real lamppost to the... anatomical one.

I do have to say that this conversation was weird on a male PC.  But maybe because by then I was used to running it as a female.

I had the exact same issue. From what I can tell, the game takes "I dont mind you being gay" to mean "I want elf penis"

I "ended" it with zeveran and then used cheats to get back the lost points.

If your in a male/male relationship with Zeveran, isn't there a party banter between Zev and Ali about it? And doesn't Zev try to sway him to his way of thinking?

I don't know about this, but there is a Shale-Zevran banter where Zevran will talk about getting Alistair to "hop borders."  It goes way over Alistair's head.

I play a female Warden, and when Liliana starts the birdies in the hair conversation I wait until the option to say, "I think we should talk about hair again" and that turns her into just a friend.

Zevran is even easier: 1. I don't comment about him staring at me, and 2. when he asks if it would okay for him to leave, I say I'd like him to stay as a friend. That shuts off the romance with him, and he becomes a friend.

I dealt with both of them like that because I wanted to romance Alistair, without losing their approval.

If you really don't want to have to put up with Leliana's romance just do what I did my first play through and don't talk to her or give her presents. She wont bother you then.

To be honest, I don´t understand why this Ninja-romancing is such a problem.
I mean, the romance is the only interesting thing about her - if it wasn´t for that, I wouldn´t pick her up in Lothering at all.....
In combat she is probably the second most useless char after dog - and even more useless than dog when you are on PC and use the "Full Combattant Dog" mod......

Lol how did you get Zevran to romance you? It's always been easy for me to stay in friends status and I play a female. You must have been clicking the flirty lines instead XD If there's friend in the line that keeps you as friend status so you should be clicking those when it comes up so you don't get into a romance.

The very first time I played the game, I got into a ninja romance with Alistair when I wanted to romance Zevran instead. The next time I played as a female, I very carefully read all of his lines and my responses to see where I had accidentally turned on the romance the first time. It was when I had given Alistair his mother's necklace and the only nice thing at all to say was that I had remembered him telling me about it because he was special to me. Every other response to him asking if I remembered was mean. It's not really fair, especially since as a male Warden you have the option to tell Alistair you remembered because he is your friend. Why oh, why isn't that response there for female Wardens? It's like the game really wants the female Warden to be Alistair's girlfriend because it is so romantic being the last two Wardens and all.

Me too. Sort of like the flying dogs comment and NOT like the mage tower comment. Just random ending to the "Have you ever...". I certainly don't think there's any intentional symbolism behind it.

Iv had Alistair break up with one of my nobles at the landsmeet beofore...I was like WTF when it happened since I didnt have any "make alistair gay" mods installed

That's why it's so funny. It's like, the last thing you'd expect. It's clearly a bug. And one that i find funny, because Alistair is lamenting he won't be able to make babies with you...like this is some dire revelation.

With leliana, however, I already know she's bi, and has gender-specific romance convos and options, so I end up with these insane jealousy conversations about romances I was certain was non-existant.

This.

I was actually laughing at the outright shock of having Alistair walk up to my rough MALE dwarf commoner after the landsmeet going all "You know we cant have any babies together now that im king right? They expect an heir!"

Just thinking about the moment makes me giggle, especially with Alistair being so sad and serious about it.

That bug is probably the funniest moment in the game when it happens.

For all you guys who got ninja romanced by Zevran because you didn't want to act homophobic, I applaud you.

This is, after all, not a game for children, so it should be assumed that the people playing it are reasonably mature. It's a mistake to think that there wouldn't be people who are completely comfortable having that kind of conversation with Zevran, without wanting it to develop into a sexual relationship.

This.

I have a pretty close relative who's gay and has been living with a man since I was born pretty much so I guess you could say im so used to being around homosexuals that I don't feel at all uncomfortable.

It's funny how as a child when I visited it never even struck me as the least bit strange or "wrong" that two grown men would be living together. Makes you wonder why so many adults have a problem with it doesn't it?

Well if you want to romance her then chances are you won't be getting ninja romanced as you'll make an effort to activate it. If not, she comes off as creepy and stalkerish because she's envisioned this whole relationship you two supposedly have in her head even if you barely acknowledge her existence. If someone did that in real life and got really upset when you actually had a romance with someone, wouldn't that make you uncomfortable?

Everyone loves the Warden. Everyone. I remember the first time I played the game, blissfully unaware that it was possible to sex up my fellow characters, and subsequently wound up in a love square with Alistair, Zevran and Leliana. Leliana in particular stunned me, as I had no idea she swung that way until she told me wanted us to be more than friends. I told her, repeatedly, that wasn't going to happen, but she still accused me of two-timing her with Alistair in the end.

Good grief. My Warden-selves really get around. If only my real self was half that charming Posted Image

If you tell him "Sorry, did you say something?" he laughs at it.  Alistair really can take a joke, though it is hard to know when you're crossing a line.  But you get some of the more interesting exchanges with him when you play the wiseacre.  Doesn't really help if your PC is not the snarky type, though.
