Insanity for ME1 was hard if you were below level 20, or basically undeveloped skills. Once you get past level 30 (In my opinion), the "advanced threshold", it becomes extremely easy. Also, Adept/Vanguard classes can breeze through this difficulty. On ME2, this time it's the classes and the level you start off with that affects your survivability. If I started at level 1 Insanity, my playthrough would be challenging, but doable. If I started at level 30, I would have a hell of a time playing. Also, playing as a Soldier on Insanity at level 30 was near impossible. "Patience" does not work. I switched over to Sentinel, and beat the game within 15 hours, whereas I spent 20 hours to get to less than halfway on my Soldier.
Insanity - So badly designed...

I think we all agree that there should have been a save point right before that fight with the Krogan battlemaster on Therum. But this is not the only tough spot in an insanity playthrough where you will find yourself reloading saves. Depending on the order that you take the main missions of course, it is possible to die a few times in all of the main missions on Noveria, Feros, Virmire, and the Liara rescue mission. Personally I would say that Feros was the easiest place to start out the four. Although I say this is the least difficult overall, killing the Thorian at a low level is certainly not easy. So complete a few of the easier side quests before you go in.
The Liara rescue mission has a few tough spots and I would never go their first myself on Insanity. The first tight spot is at the mining facility where you get ambushed by the geth. I found this bit tricky on my first playthrough, and although I can handle it now its still easy to get killed from one shot kills. Snipers continue to be the most deadly enemies throughout until the end of the game. And I would not agree with the poster above who says insanity difficulty is extremely easy in ME1 because it is possible to die in this game at many points. Go play Dragon Age on Hardcore difficulty, thats what I call extremely easy difficulty where an experienced player should never die once.
Anyhow the difficulty of insanity playthroughs depends a lot on the class you are playing. The soldier class is way overpowered imo and easy even on insanity. This is because the ridiculous amounts of health you can gain when you level up, and immunity of course lol. A very good class for weaker players on an insanity run though. Vanguard class is also a bit of a mix of a soldier so is also very easy. An adept is very vulnerable early on but gets almost untouchable with stronger powers and less cooldown times. So really either an infiltrator, engineer, or sentinel, offer a reasonable challenge on insanity. Main death points on insanity below.
Pinnacle station, Vidinos and hunt scenarios
Krogan battlemaster fight on Therum
Geth ambush at Mining facility
Matriarch Benezia fight to the death
Snipers throughout Virmire assault
Killing the Thorain
Getting out of the Hotlabs alive!
The control centre on llos
Killing Turian boss in Wrex's personal quest
Rogue VI mission on anything near level 20
Also a few of the other side quests are tough but I forget their names.
Funny, that I have never found the end fight with Saren to be difficult at all. Although the whole ending to this game was truly awesome.

Im gunna repeat what everyone else is saying jsut for the hell of it, ME1 Insanity is easy past level 15-20 depending on what class your playing. I usually go Vanguard and by the time i hit level 30 can just put up a barrier and plow through anything without much trouble at all, but my god was i suprised when i imported him into ME2 on insanity, you actually have to have a smart playing style in ME2 for a vanguard your you get torn to shreds, bye bye shotgun spamming : (
You are wrond my friend. On ME1 enemies keep using immunity. It's nearly immpossible to kill an enemy. You have to run and gun. In ME2, insanity was a little too easy.
Well im just not though because thats what i do, they may use immunity but they still fall down whe a shot gun is fired in their face, just a matter of finishing them off when they get back up. Plus im a Singularity Whoare so most of the time they dont get a chance to use imunnity.
