I have searched and can find nothing that explains in clear terms how to do this. Simply put, I have a custom gift that the player can acquire in a short quest, and I would like the gift to result in +6 approval from Sten. If anyone can offer a step-by-step process of achieving this, I would appreciate it greatly.

You have to change the APP_ITEM_MOTIVATION value in the item's Variables.
Take a look at approval_h to know which value you have to use.

I initially read through the whole variable list in search of something like this, but I guess I wasn't looking for "motivation." Set the value to 6 for Sten, and it works great. Thank you.
