There's 2 random encounters that i dread at an early level and 1 i dread even when I'm high level. The two low level killers are the wolves and the bandit ambush (with 3 archers and a trap on a little hill) There's also a clap trap in the middle where the melee bandits and leader come for you.

The one i loathe and gets me more often than not is the encounter that ensues after you've left the circle (i think it's the conclusion to the 5 pages and 4 mages quest). The mage on the hill always, always nails me with a paralyse, then a fire ball and some other random spell in quick succession. I'm cabbaged before i can say BASTA...

the encounter where you get the option to recruit Zevern can be pretty brutal too unless you nail the mage and avoid getting pinned with the archers whilst you're running towards her

for the "doh" moment, make sure your archer/mage w/e is set to "ranged" behavior in the little box in the upper right....when i first started playing i was left speechless as to why leliana kept whipping out her daggers when I had her trained in melee archery and other goodness...found out "default" behavior has em do that, "ranged' is better.

If possible, when leaving camp, head first to the last area you were at before camp. This stop will allow you to buff and prepare your party for the road. Those few rounds saved will often be the difference in the next tough encounter.

Try and run away once it is triggered and lure them off into more managable groups.
Lay traps and shoot them when they are stood still.
Or you could throw Acid Flasks and bombs at them and run away and lure them out and shoot them.
Don't try and melee them when they are all grouped together, it is not a good idea.
They are best attacked from a distance and the only ones in melee your tank/s.

Or you could turn the difficulty down to Casual, Normal, Hard whichever you found it easier that is lower.
There is no penalty for turning the dificulty down for some Battles.
The only time it could affect you is for the trophy for comepleting it on Nightmare.

The jump from Casual to Normal is hard.

Some battles on Normal are horrible.
Normal does not usually give me much trouble but some battles are too hard.

Those wolves wiped me out so many times on my first play through :o

My second play through with a mage by the time I got to them I already had blood wound, when you are swarmed by enemys that spell is a life saver, those pesky wolves wiped out in no time.

If you have some ranged folks in your party, have them take out what foes they can at distance; just before the system goes into Attack mode. This may not bring the attention of all opposing forces, and dealing with a few at a time can work wonders.
