So um how do you get past the ogre on normal mode if you made a mage?

Title basically says it all.  I'm trying to kill the first ogre with me (a mage), the gray warden guy and 2 town guards.  Flame me all you like for not being able to beat the ogre at the top of the tower as long as you give me a strategy that works.  I have the basic heal spell, disorient, terror, and the stone tree up to earthquake.  Ogre is tearing me up.  Terror seems to be auto aggro that I can't drop, I can heal for a bit, but can't keep up with the ogres damage.  Don't have bows for any of my guys unfortunately (otherwise it seems that running in circles while my party members slowly picked him apart would be an option.

Thanks in advance.

I used Forcefield.

Had Alistar taunt the Ogre, threw a Force Field on Alistar, then my party killed him before the 20 seconds ran up, Dog ended up getting the killing blow, which was a great animation.

That last thing you mentioned. It's what I did. It works.

I had the awesome tower guard pull out his crossbow; the ogre decided crossbowmen are delicious. Safe to say, ogres are slow so I just had the guard run around the whole time while the rest of my characters attacked the ogre.

Yeah, every mage needs to have, very early in the game, the ability to petrify/paralyze or otherwise lock down an enemy tank. Or at least stun the bugger. And don't just stand in one place. Get a shot or two off, and then move. When he goes to retaliate, you're not there.

In all fairness, he IS like, twice as hard as the tower until then.

Have Alistair tank it, you heal him whenever you can, Alistair also chug some of the low ranking poultices whenever he can, the two town guards haphazardly try to kill it. It should work, least it did for me. Oh, and if it grabs someone, stun him with one of the others.

Gotta love the internet and fast replies.  Unfortunately I dont' have forcefield, and how the heck did you kill the thing in 20 seconds?  And where did you get a dog?  I saw some in the lower levels, but they stayed behind.  Horror is the spell I've been using for CC, unfortunately this guy seems pretty resistant to it, and like I said it seems to grab insta aggro that I can't shake.

I can run the guy in circles all day, guess it is time to see if I can find some bows.

Thanks again

You will have the Dog if you started out in the human noble origin. So Default137 couldn't be a mage ;)

When he's running in circles, you can kill the thing with just the mage staff and the occasional mage bolt. You may not want to use any extra bows, as they may attract the ogre's attention away from the guy you're distracting the ogre with (;

Or Default has done Ostagar so much his Ogre killing is mixing up ;_;

For a Mage, I'd REALLY, REALLY suggest getting Forcefield as fast as you can, its a life saver in many situations, and can help keep Alistar alive should you choose to go down the path of awesome AoE Death, it also allows him to become bait, and all sorts of other fun things.

And heck, if things go bad, you can throw off a quick Mindblast, as its also a REALLY useful skill, and throw up Force Field. Or heck, if a squishy party member gets attacked, bam instant 20 seconds of they can not die, but cannot move either.

As for how I killed it in 20 seconds, as I said, Alistar taunted it, then he got turned invunrable for 20 seconds, I then had all my other allies just beat on it without any problems, and spammed Lightning and Winters Grasp on it, by the time Force Field was gone, the Ogre was pretty much dead.

Thing about Ogres is, they hit really hard, but their health is not as large as it seems, they mainly keep themselves alive by beating the crap out of your party, so you have to kite/avoid them, which gimps your damage somewhat, if you can force them to stay put, or get them off your other group members, you can easily burn them down.

You can get the Dog as other classes as well if you do the "Mabari War Dog" quest in Ostagar (or at least I assume so since I've just been friendly with it and is helpign it to survive and have asked if it could be inprinted to me...).

I will get back to you on the "how do I get past the Ogre as a mage" as soon as I get enough tiem to play so that i can actually get there... I do have a rather different setup on my mage though with Winter's embrace, forcefield and mind blast (this taken as a tips from the flash game where it worked excelently...)

I agree with this! Two lifesavers.

Thanks again for the help, run the guy in circles while pegging him with arrows it was. Kinda anti climatic, but I guess whatever works....

Ah posted before reading the replies on spells. Thanks for the tips on them. I really had no idea what to take for spells. I figured that CC would probably be useful regardless of what other party members I got, so I've started going for it. I seriously considered cold, but thought that I read somewhere that one of the main NPCs (Morrigan maybe?) was primarily cold, and I didn't want to just copy another character I would have in my party.

I was looking at forcefield, and will definitely try and pick it up. Have to say I kinda wish they gave a bit more math on the spell descriptions. Don't necessarily want to completely min/max, but at the same time I'd like to know what is actually effective.

Anyway thanks again.

I had the three tanks alternate between getting the ogres attention while I attacked with my mage normally. I spammed heals as necessary and if it got really bad I had the tanks use a potion. I managed to get through on normal without a single casualty. If you have any of the bonus dlc gear that may help you some. You should have both the Lucky Stone and Embri's Many Pockets.

As a Mage that has finished the game, there are a few spells I would completely recommend you gun for above all others.

Mind Blast = AoE Stun

Force Field = 20 Seconds of Godmode on anyparty member, or even mobs if you need to CC them

Cone of Cold = AoE with a chance of freezing things, when frozen, crits will shatter them

The entire lightning tree = It does Stamina damage, rather then normal damage, meaning it will do more damage to bosses then lets say a Fireball.

Well glad to hear that I'm not the only mage having problems with this big chap. One additional question, am I the only one finding that the mages mana pool dissapears VERY fast? I have 2 pots left before the encounter so my mage will not be doing much :(

More healing pots though in the inventory so I'll try using Allistair to tank and hope the rest of the party cuts him down fast!

BTW, on the way up you can open cages that release 2 dogs but they get killed pretty fast :(

I used frost as well. just cone of cold and kite then cone of cold again. Its pretty deadly if you have 2 mages later in the game with it. 2x cone of cold and 2x stone fist makes for alot of shatter combos

I had absolutely no trouble with the Ogre.

Did it three times with Mages. (First one with a mix of entropy and spirit spells, no healing. Then one with entropy and creation spells, with first healing spell. And lastly with a purely creation mage, first and second healing.)

Ogre has always been easy as cake for me. On normal at least. :P

To further extend this tactic.  The spell "Crushing Prison" causes forcefield to explode damaging everything near and removing the force field.  It is an official in game "spell combinatio"

Once you get Crushing Prison, as said before using Alastair as bait works wonders.  Send him in, draw everything.  Force field, AOE everything, and finish with Crushing prison which will aoe everything as well as free alastair. :)

Yes, you should get a dog should from the quest from the kennel guy if you don't start human noble. I think.
