So um how do you get past the ogre on normal mode if you made a mage?

Hehe, I'm a mage and I just healed the guards and Alistair. Which didn't work out well, since they all died. Then, I ran in circles and killed the ogre by shooting it with my staff... It was funny, I thought, because I'm such a puny cute female elf ;)

Saved my butt many times over through out the game.

Agreed.
But it only took me one paralyze and the whole party  beating the crap out of him while it was in effect.

Non-human nobles get the Dog at Ostigar.

I went heavy on the Entropy tree for some stunning power, that seemed to work well on my mage.

I had the awesome tower guard pull out his crossbow; the ogre decided crossbowmen are delicious. Safe to say, ogres are slow so I just had the guard run around the whole time while the rest of my characters attacked the ogre.

In addition to CC, I find it helpful to stock up on things like acid bombs to throw for the really tough fights. All you need is a single point in the poison skill tree to use these. Don't forget to step out of the way when you notice him throw rocks at you.

yea a jump on attack would of been cinimatic. In stead of running around like a chicken. I mean beats can jump on us. Ogres and what not can grab us. We should be able to jump on them. But there is always next gen :) At least the kill animations own.

I'm going to paraphrase this entire thread in one go. LOL.

Everybody in this entire topic wrote...

1. Stunlock/other CC the ogre (or use an invulnerability option on your main tank)
2. Attack.
3. ???
4. Profit!

My herbalist mage had the following:

Flame Cone, Heal, Sprite, Grease.

I had Allister, Tower Guard (with Xbow and fire bolts), and Soldier

I had 10 lesser healing, 4 Lesser Lyceam(?), 2 Rock poultices

Start of battle I had Allister and Soldier pop the rock poultices. I cast grease on ogre and did pinning shot on the Ogre.

2nd round I move Allister and Soldier to edge of Grease and hit Ogre with arcane bolt.

3rd round I hit Ogre with flame cone and started the melee attack.

From there is was using the melee to try to keep him in the burning grease and keeping healing on Allister and soldier (using heal spell and pots).

I found ogre really easy on my second playthrough. Here's the trick: even without kiting him around you can dodge most of his attacks. Text pops up over his head whenever he's about to do one of those big AE clobber hits, pause the game and run your melee out of range of him then. Likely only one person will get hit and you can avoid most attacks altogether.

Try to save one stun, freeze, incapacitate, whatever for when he picks someone up, if you hit him with one of those then he'll drop the person.

Okay then what did I do wrong?

Got the flower in Wilds and gave to Vet in Ostigar. Vet says Dawg should be all healed up by after the big fight. So did not have Dawg in Tower. On road from Flemeth to Lothering, Dawg came trotting up to me just before first fight.

If I based on your profile picture you are a dwarf.  You wil get the dog after the battle as the Kennel master said.  To have it before the tower was answered in Sunfire00 response (highlighted below)  Posted Image

This fight made me want to melt my PC into slag....that being said - oh the first 20 times I fought him the guards and Allistair would take him down to 50% health IF I was paying attention doing my job, ie. Winter's Grasp, Flame Blast(cone), and avoid the charges and stomps/ground-pounds. Evetually the battle always ends up this way - Ogre 40% health, everybody dead except me...kite him while being acutely aware of my proximity and basically a few times if I could go tow to tow with my force-field, health potions, and burn him with the Flame Blast right in the face.....two things I found extremely useful after much frustration reloading from the beginning of the fight - #1 try and zoom out for kiting effectively, #2 DO NOT stay in one place long enough for him to focus on you for more than 5 seconds. The kiting will regain your mana, and once he's on you and no one else is left, if you don't have him down to at least 35-40% health, you're toast anyways. This on normal difficulty setting, no dog, leather armor, force-field on continuously, about 5-7 health potions and 1 lyrium potion left. I am deeply saddened I put points into Death Magic, because it was less than useless here.

(Not a mage but an archer, so basically the same strategie applies)

I tried the more strategic approaches mentioned above a few times, but all I saw was "resist, resist, resist" :), so finally (after dieing in cruel animations a few times), I just held my buddies in the back and opened fire with my rogue archer to draw agro. When he came close we exchanged a few melee swings (he smashing me to the ground, nearly killed me, me luckily connecting with dirty fighting) and then I ran around in large circles for a few minutes while on 10% health, while my no-name mage wanded and nuked and Allistar and Doggie followed him and hit him once in a while :)

After the initial clash he never touched me again :)

for all but human nobles, the dog isnt available until well after you finish ostagar. do the flower quest, and you'll meet up with it in a random battle after ostagar. no dog for non human nobles on the fight in question

Walking bomb is fun to use on the ogre. DoTs in general are a riot to use and stack on bosses.

That was I think what made me want to melt my PC to slag....How many times can an enemy resist forms of damage?? Not a fair fight, but what do I know about this game - too soon to make judgements. I am sure I will be on a road to nowhere soon:blink:

I didn't have force shield but I had Cone of Cold. So what I did was run around until I got my mana up and did cone of cold then threw the stone at it rinse and repeat. Kiting is the way to go to beat the damn thing
