How do you use Shale?

I have not used Shale too much in any of my parties so far and I am curious as to which talents/strategies people use. The only ones I have made much use of thus far have been the melee talents - and I did see somewhere that lightning damage drains mana so I equipped lightning weapon crystals and sent Shale after mages with at least one party. (perhaps this was at games end with my mage PC)

Which of Shales four talent trees do you tend use and why?

(Don't forget this is the NO SPOILER forum - so I'm not looking for specific battle info - just general choices you make and how you implement them)

Mostly Stoneheart. I like shale as a tank rather than a primary damage dealer.

I like the ranged talents for the start of a fight. Cooldown's too long to use them more than once.

I don't generally like to use melee offense mode too much unless there's only one active opponent. There are two talents that automatically crit, which is useful if you're going for shatters. Obviously less important post-patch.

Stoneheart and rock mastery is what I use, I also run him as a con tank.

If it helps, I find it best to not take Shale for granite....

* Is there any limit to how many times I can use this pun???*

Do you set these behaviors in tactics or micromanage them?

Personally, I set Stoneheart in Tactics, then use any other set only when I have Shale possessed.

If I do use her, its as a tank. either in stoneheart or in stone aura mode.

If laughs are your quarry, I can't think of a boulder joke than that.  A real gem!  Yes you're funny, so don't let anyone slag you over it, but just don't get vein about it, OK?

Win! :D

As for the OP; I haven't really. I intend to do so for an upcoming Dwarf run.
Overall I am just more comfortable with Alistair being my tank but we'll see.

Same here. Any situation where I'd want Shale out of Stoneheart is also a situation where I'd want to be taking direct control.

I set her tactics to use the Stoneheart line of skills, and never use any of the others. Shale is purely a tank for me - and he makes a great tank. I focus on constitution to satisfy the requirements for equipping the top-tier large crystals, and give enough strength to satisfy the requirements for top tier small crystals, and put the rest to dexterity.

When used as a tank, I think the green natural crystals are probably the best.

I find Stone Aura very useful if you are a mage and have other mages in your party as well, the bonuses are great (spellpower, health and mana regen for example).

I have Stoneheart set in tactics as the main mode because its the best tanking mode for Shale and also draws a lot of threat. I activate stone aura in very specific situations, mainly when almost all the party is using ranged magic attacks. Rock mastery is useful if you like using archery a lot. I have never used the melee mode however.

Well I switched Shale to default defender tactics and stuck with stoneheart mostly as I began an early run through Orzammar with a dwarf noble rogue (basicly right out of Lothering after WK, RTO and picking up Shale) and I am very pleased with the results thus far - much better than other efforts in the past using the melee options -

Playing on hard we had one reload with bounty hunters and one with Jarvia altho Shale had to finish off the last proving alone...We are about to head into the Deep Roads it will be interesting to see how we fare (never been here this early in the game).

I've used him as a tank and a damage dealer , he was good at both , think he is probably the best tank for drawing aggro and absorbing damage , certainly until your other fighter have good armour.

Not tried his ranged skills , i've started an archer so i might give it a go.

edit - btw... some good use of puns in previous posts :) .

i use shale every time. i like using powerful blows, or whatever it's called. i then have shale use her earthquake ability. i love that. plus, she has two abilities that allow her to do crazy damage. when and enemy gets to 25% or so i have her use one and finish them off. it works nice, and she's so strong she damages faster.

I found myself being saved by stone aura a lot, the biggest one being my mage's battle with the high dragon. Totem mode FTW XD

I mainly switch Shale between three modes - Pulverizing Blows, Stoneheart and Rock Mastery. I do not really care for the forth line. I like to start off with Rock Hurl/Earthen Grasp and sometimes Rock Barrage Against Archers. Also, Quake is great against groups. Not party friendly though. Slam is a good shattering attack. In the Stoneheart mode I like Bellow and the last one in that line. All of her modes have a quick cooldown so it is easy to switch back and forth between modes while you are waiting on cooldowns.

Also, if you have a mage in the party keep in mind Shale does elemental damage - and will benefit from an Affliction Hex/Vulnerability Hex. An Affliction Hex cast from a high spell power mage can double Shales damage.

I manually use the Rock Mastery talents at the start of the fight and possibly during the fight depending on distance and enemies remaining, then have her set to the scrapper script. Shale does absolutely amazing damage with her highest tier Fire Crystal, especially with Affliction Hex as Bean pointed out.

The only time I used him was as a tank. I have way better dps options, thanks.

Max out the tank line, use taunt, forcefiled her and have fun backstabbing your enemies to death while the nice "NO EFFECT!" message floats over Shale´s head.

No I actually posted it in the General Discussion NO Spoilers forum - I did so specifically becuase I did not want to see any spoilers about how to use Shale for specific battles or to get any other spoiler type info about Shale in the discussion.

In spite of my OP stating exactly that - explaining why it was posted in no spoilers forum some moderator obviously found him/herself with to little to do and decided to move it to the spoiler section - who knows why -

as far as I can see there have been no spoilers posted here and I found it irritating to spend about 20 minutes looking for the thread in the forum I originally posted it in the other day - finally having to load my profile to find where it had been moved to.Posted Image

I have major areas of the game I have not explored yet so I'll probably just abandon the thread rather than continue to enter the spoilers forum to follow up with it and take a chance on seeing stuff I don't want to...Posted Image
