Personally I like using the Mantis over the Viper because the headshots do a significant amount of damage. Everytime I try headshotting with the Viper it doesn't do as much damage. After reading some of these forums I've noticed there's a lot of preference on the Mantis. Is there something about the Mantis that the Viper doesn't have?

The base damage of the Mantis is like 4x higher.

Depends on how you play.

On my soldier I liked using the Viper to just "shoot 'em up"

But on my Infiltrator I prefered the Mantis(Eventually I got the Widow) Because Cloak + Headshots was my playstyle.

I like the Viper [most of the time] but that's just a playstyle choice. Even though it does less damage per shot the damage over time isn't bad. The ammo capacity is also nice.

Viper destroys the Mantis as far as DPS goes, and it's more ammo efficient to boot. The only advantage the Mantis has is that you expose yourself less since you have to take ~3 shots with the viper to match the damage of one Mantis shot.

Viper is the weapon of choice against heavy targets that you need to take down quickly. However, as I rarely find myself in such a position, I prefer the instant-killing capacity and safety of Mantis any day. I never take sniper rifle training, because I like to have the option to slow down time when I'm trying to land a headshot. But if I did take sniper rifle training on a non-sniper class, I'd go for the viper exactly because of tha lack of slowdown; it's more forgiving.

Mantis has higher damage per shot and therefore damage per time spent out of cover. This can be imprtant on Insanity.

But in terms of ammo efficiency and DPS, the Viper blows it out of the water.

IMO for balance, the Mantis really should have double the ammo it has now. Oh well.

I'm a soldier, and Viper + Adrenaline Rush = Saving my ass. On Insanity mode, it's the weapon that if I didn't have, I probably couldn't get through most of the enemies.

I'd grab the Mantis for an Infiltrator untill you can get the Widow, I prefer single powerful shots on an Inf, also for the lesser time spent out of cover etc.

For a Soldier I'd grab the Viper for AR goodness, takes down big targets incredibly quick. And it allows you to grab the Revenant on the Collector Ship..

Alternatively we should have a wider selection of sniper rifles available; mantis is good as a starting rifle but another "bolt action" type rifle with more ammo would be great for those who can't / won't get the widow

I'm with the rest. I prefer mantis for the infiltrator but for every other class I prefer the viper. It will take out any elite enemy really fast, especially scions. I always make sure I have the viper on every class I play. Probably the best non-special weapon in the game.

I tend to never use the Viper because it destroys the bigger baddies like scions ridiculously fast. I like it when the enemies actually have somewhat of a chance. Plus, personally, I feel the single shot headshot to feel more rewarding in games.

Additionally, having Garrus use any sniper but the Mantis is a sacrilege. Shame on you, folks.

Does Garrus go for headshots when he uses the Mantis? I don't know how reliable he is in that department.

Viper is best for soldiers with adrenaline rush for getting headshots.

For infiltrators I always go with mantis then widow, and my squadmattes usually have mantis, though sometimes I have thane supporting with a Viper.

Actually, this isn't neccessarily true. The best Sniper Rifle to use depends on which version of Adrenaline Rush you're going with. The Viper gets the best damage boost out of Hardened Adrenaline Rush, while the Mantis and Widow get the best damage boost out of Heightened Adrenaline Rush.

Frankly, which is better is a matter of preference. Some people prefer fast-firing weapons, and for them, the Viper is the best choice. For me, I prefer the Mantis and Widow. It's a matter of taste.

Of course, it doesn't help that I really can't get used to the Viper. By the time I can get it, I'm so used to the Mantis that I can't use the thing properly, so I switch back to the Mantis at the first opportuntiy, and only replace it when I pick up the Widow.

I prefer using Mantis with Hardened AR. Yes, not heightened. Hardened is more than enough to instagib any regular mob. I just prefer the longer duration compered to heightened when using other guns.

It doesn't matter which version of adrenaline rush the soldier has, he's always more effecient with the viper than the mantis. A soldier can kill most enemies during an AR within 3 or 4 shots with the viper. Thats 15 to 20 kills on a 60 shot viper. The mantis is only a 10 shot weapon.

So from what I understand the Mantis/Widow is better for Infiltrators and the Viper for Soldiers?

I know that I tried to use the Viper on my Infiltrator and had to get back to the Mantis... it didn't have the same feel that the Mantis has.

Assassination cloak enables you to one shot Collector Guardians and others with more health and defenses than other mobs with the widow and heavy warp/tungsten ammo, but you can still one shot most normal mobs with it. Viper over the two on a soldier is more of a personal choice but it is probably more efficient, all things considered. The DPS of the Viper will be significantly higher on a soldier but some people still prefer single shotting enemies when possible.

edit: I am speaking of insanity difficulty, I don't know about others as I don't play on other difficulties. I bet you can probably one shot scions on easier difficulties with the widow. :P

That's what I'm feeling too. Explains a lot bc I rolled an Infiltrator and stick with the Mantis. Haven't tried the Soldier class yet.

I don't mind the mantis, but I've never been able to figure out why anyone would bother with it after picking up the Viper. The only advantage I can see is that you spend a bit less time out of cover using the mantis.... in theory. In reality you have to spend a lot more time lining up your shots with the mantis, as it's ammo capacity is pathetic and it takes 5 months to reload.

Meanwhile the Viper basiclally kills anything and everything no matter their defences. It's probably my fave single rifle in the game... the fact it maintains it's utility in the face of the Revenant's awesomeness speaks volumes about how brilliant it is.

Once as a soldier, once an infil, but primarily as a Biotic. Adept is my fave class. Viper + Warp Ammo + Warp Explosions = Unholy amounts of damage.
