Why all the extra work Saren?

All he had to do was go visit the Citidel tower without letting anyone know he had gone rouge....
Once the Citidel is back under Reaper control, it could of been opened to let all the Reapers in without any trouble or help needed from the Geth.

Also if Sovereign had rocked up by itself without the Geth fleet, would have been a very different fight. Like vigil said, the Reapers weren't invincible, just very tough.

On my Insanity ME-1 Playthrough, I had a question pop up that I hadn't thought of before. Why does Saren do all this extra work to find the Conduit?

The Citadel Tower is on constant sniper watch. I guess the console required to activate Citadel is off limits to Spectres, or atleast would have risen eye brows that what he is doing even more so if the existence of whole console is unknown. It would definetly get attention to Sarens doings. Geth provided diversion so that Saren could work in peace.

So the Conduit was used for mass force infiltration, I can see that. You'd think as a Spectre, Saren could of come up with some excuse to gain access to the Citidel tower, maybe claim Sovereign was a ship he "found". Would take a few months but I could see the council allowing Sovereign to guard the station, just as the Destiny's Ascension did.
Please, as dumb as Council is they are not THAT idiots. Citadel tower is the very heart of the Citadel. Something as wierd as (most likely) unknown console in the very middle of their throne will definetly require detailed explanations and experiments even from Spectre. And appearance of largest Dreadnought in the whole Galaxy (even dwarfs Ascension) of unknown origin would only make things even more suspicious.

Well one thing to add. The console that Saren uses may be unknown to the Counsel. If he tried to use it without attacking the Citadel causing mass confusion he would have to explain how he knew about it to begin with.

Saren apparently has enough money to buy Fist's loyalty from the Shadow Broker, as well as hire a general assortment of goons. Why not either bribe a technician, or hire a hacker to pose as one, and hack Avina to do something similar to what happened during the Rogue VI quest. Effectively shut the Citadel down and give Saren some kind of master control.

I ques people are asking why Saren did not just reprogram the Citidel tower mass relay with Sovereing knowledge and undo what Protheans did for it, before losing the Specter status?
That is good question.
Because after Saren lost of Specter status, situation did become different, because Saren did not anymore have access to Citidel at all. That would make the conduit very usefull for Saren. How ever, in Tali's testimony what cause Saren to lose the Specter status, showed that Saren was allready looking the Conduit before losing Specter status. Question is why Saren was looking it?
That doesn't make any sense, unless Sovereing did not know how to undo the what Protheans did for Citidel mass relay without Protheans knowledge, what was hidden from reapers in this place where Conduit was. So, the conduit it self wasn't the main point, but the knowledge how Citidel mass relay was connected to Conduit only.

Because there is no telling how the Keepers would react to any tinkering with the Citadel.
Saren shoots several Keepers en route to the master control in the climax of the first game. Presumably because even when the Citadel is under attack, the Keepers (uninfluenced by the control signal) are still trying to maintain the structural and functional intergrity of the Citadel.
It's reasonable to conjecture that the Keepers would detect and repair any fundamental code issues with AVINA if it was tampered with.
On the plus side, they'd also never bother to let anyone know about any attempts to hack AVINA in the first place, so there would still be no proof to implicate Saren in the plot.
